Artist Research Blog 3: Yael Martinez

Yael Martinez was born in Guerrero in 1984. His work addresses fractured communities in Mexico. He often works symbolically to evoke a sense of the emptiness, absence, and pain suffered by those affected by the state and organized crime.
Tumblr media
Porographer: Yael Martinez
Title: The Symbolic Construction of a Territory Where Violence Penetrates All
Date:2013
Medium: Color Photo
Venue: Magnum Photos
Description: This image has two sides. In the front, you can see a father playing with his daughter and having fun, but the shadow shows a hanging person and someone looking at it with a hurt pose.
I really like the work of Yael because I can understand every single one of his pictures, as I was born and raised in Guerrero, Mexico, and every single photo makes sense. Organized crime is really bad, and this is a problem that Mexico still has to this day. The sadness of every photo is true.

Title: La Maya
Date: 1986
Medium: Black and white
Venue: Magnum Photos
Description: The image portrays a little girl dressed in traditional clothing, seated before a beautiful backdrop of flowers. There is a Spanish tradition where a little girl is chosen to represent the spirit of spring. It is a saint to be a symbol of fertility and renewal.
I really like this picture; it looks like Mary, the mother of Jesus. It looks like the portrait of a saint. Even though there is too much around the girl, you can see that she is the center of attention, because she is in the middle and in white.

Andres Serrano: Works 1983-1993
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andres Serrano was born on August 15, 1950, in New York City. Andres Serrano's photography is known for its provocative and confrontational approach, often challenging societal taboos and deeply ingrained beliefs. The collection includes images from seven of Serrano’s series, exploring themes of religion, bodily fluids, death, and violence. This book was a little bit shocking to watch because I have never seen anything like it. It's like it's showing all the bad things with religions, the hypocrisy that is around it.

William Eggleston's Guide by William Eggleston
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
William Eggleston was born in 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee. William Eggleston is most known as the guy who dragged color photography into the fine art scene. He treats all subjects with equal importance, whether it's a mundane household object or a striking street scene. This book showed everyday life moments from the place where he grew up. Their photos make you feel like you know what was happening while taking the photo. I like how he was just taking a picture of the moment he was in it makes the moment feel special because you get to remember a part of it.

I really like this album because it shows the truth, it shows the everyday lives of Iranian people. It is showing different types of emotions and actions post-revolution. Some look happy, but others look lost and shocked. Tavakolia wants the people to see the aftermath.

The process of taking this photo was fun. I enjoy the process of taking the photo. I always wonder how photos were taken. I thought it would be more difficult to work with the camera, but the steps were easy. The process to develop the photo was also fun. I did not develop this photo in the darkroom; I did it in Photoshop, but I was able to see how photos were developed in the darkroom with other classmates' photos. I was already familiar with the process because I took a photo class in high school, and we developed a lot of photos in the dark room. I like when the film is taking color and when you can see how the photo is developing.

Theme project proposal
For my theme photography project, I want to focus on temples and churches because my family is religious and I always wonder what other religions their churches and temples are different based on the religion. Some temples and churches have beautiful architectural structures and interior designs. I want to go around Fresno and visit churches and temples to take photos. I think temples and churches are free to the public, and I would take pictures of the outside and inside when there are no people, so I don’t disrespect their place. I would take photos mostly in the day so the place is illuminated by the sun. If I have time during the day to go again, I would like to take photos at night because they have lights on and make the place look more interesting. I want to show people the difference between religions. Each religion is unique and beautiful. I know some people do not know what a temple or church looks like besides their own, and I want to show them the way I can.
