What if you never got over your ex? What if, just as you’re trying to move on with someone new, he shows up—right there in front of you?
Pairing — Jungkook x reader | exes to lovers?
genre — romance · reunion · drama · second chance · lingering feelings · unspoken tension
A / N — Hey! It’s my first time posting here so I have no idea how things work lol. But I really hope you like what I wrote! If you do, feel free to drop a like—or a heart? Is that how it works? lol. I’m Hannah btw, nice to meet you :)

“Did you make it home safe?”
That was the text you received just as you were placing your keys on the table, your bag still hanging from your shoulder. You were coming back from dinner with friends, but that message wasn’t from just anyone. It was from the guy you’d been seeing for the past few weeks. You weren’t a couple yet, but you were building something. A connection that grew with each date, with every conversation. And who knows
maybe, someday, it could become something more.
You looked at the screen and sat on the edge of the couch with a sigh. Your fingers began typing quickly.
“Yeah, all good. And
I’m sorry. I never imagined we’d run into him, I had no idea he was back in Busan. Just
 forgive me :(”
Everything had been normal at the restaurant. You were laughing, chatting, holding a glass of wine as the relaxed atmosphere wrapped around you. The table was close to the entrance, so you had a clear view of who came in and out. And then you saw him. Two guys walked through the door. One of them you didn’t recognize. The other
didn’t even need to remove his mask for you to know.
Jeon Jungkook.
Your ex-boyfriend.
That ex-boyfriend.
You hadn’t seen him in a long time
since, what, his last tour maybe? Because yes, Jungkook is a singer. And not just any singer. His face was everywhere: on social media, interviews, campaigns, songs. Even now, fans still tagged you in old photos of the two of you, commenting how much they missed you together.
“Don’t worry. None of us knew we’d see him. We can’t predict the future. So it’s all good.”
That was his reply. The guy you were seeing now. The one who had — unintentionally — witnessed that unexpected appearance. And even though his message reassured you, you only replied with a couple of kiss emojis. You liked him, sure
but you still weren’t sure how you felt. You’d been alone a long time after Jungkook.
It had been a years-long relationship.
As much as you didn’t want to admit it, seeing him again shook you. You tried to distract yourself, to not think
but when you closed your eyes, it became clear:
You were about to break your promise.
The one where you wouldn’t look him up.
The one you’d kept for days.
Weeks.
Months.
You hadn’t watched interviews, stalked his profile, or listened to his new songs. Nothing.
But tonight
 — Just this once, you told yourself.
You stretched to the other side of the couch, reaching for your laptop. You turned it on, guilt crawling in, opened the browser and searched for that interview. The one everyone kept talking about. It had only been out for a few weeks
but you had avoided it. Until now.

The interview began.
God
 he looked good.
It was well known among fans, it had gone viral, but you hadn’t lived it until that moment. You bit your thumbnail as the laptop rested on your stomach, nestled between the cushions. That stupid feeling of knowing what’s coming
and still needing to see it.
— “So tell us, young singer
” — the interviewer wore a professional smile, holding cue cards in her hands—, “Is there anyone on your mind lately?”
The silence that followed made you swallow hard. The audience clapped with excitement. The camera zoomed in on his face. Jungkook smiled —that bunny-toothed smile, the one you’d had the privilege of seeing up close so many times—. He shook his head.
— “No one? Really?” — she insisted, laughing.
He looked down for a moment before answering, calm:
— “It’s just
I don’t feel like I’m in love with someone new.”
The camera caught it perfectly: sparkling eyes, a soft smile, an outfit perfectly aligned with his album aesthetic. He was in his era, shining as always. And even though you pretended to be clueless about his career
of course you knew a few things.
Even though you told yourself “I never look him up.”
— “The boys always say I’m still in love
” — Jungkook chuckled softly, almost wistfully —, “but not with someone I’m getting to know.”
— “Who could it be?” — they asked.
But he didn’t answer.
He didn’t look away.
He didn’t deny it.
He just
 stayed silent.
You paused it right there.
The screen froze on his smile. The one you knew by heart. Your eyes scanned every feature like you didn’t remember them. Like you hadn’t spent years kissing that mouth, caressing that jaw, sleeping next to that face.
And then

Knock, knock.
The sound at the door pulled you back to reality.
You got up thinking it was a neighbor. You weren’t expecting visitors this late. You set the laptop aside and walked toward the door. — Just a second! — you called out, pulling your hair up into a ponytail.
Just as you were about to tie it, you opened the door
and there he was. A tattooed guy, leaning casually against the frame, staring straight into your eyes.
— I wasn’t planning to come — he said.
You let your hair fall back down your shoulders. Your heart pounded so loud you could barely stand still.
There he was.
Tattoos visible.
Messy hair.
And that look of his that you always, always liked.
— Are you with him? — he asked bluntly—. I saw
I know you saw me. I noticed you’re seeing that guy who was beside you. Today. Earlier. — He looked down, choosing his words carefully.
— You left your friend to come here? — you asked, serious.
He shook his head, raised his gaze with conviction, and pulled a beanie from his jacket. Put it on, covering himself.
Cautious. In case someone recognized him.
— We just had dinner. Everyone was going home after that — he explained —. My plan was to do a live
in fact, they’re probably wondering why I haven’t shown up on Weverse yet. — He sighed, burying his hands in his pockets —. But I preferred to look for my ex-girlfriend.
— Look for me? You broke up with me, Jeon. I don’t get why someone who ended everything would show up at my place.
He held your gaze and slowly shook his head.
— You know I didn’t want to break up. But my schedule was packed, I had no time for a relationship
I didn’t want to drag you into that — he rubbed his forehead, frustrated —. Ah
 can I come in?
You shook your head.
He crossed his arms.
— Fine — he accepted —. Then we’ll talk here. Even if it’s not ideal. Not for me
 not for you.
You frowned, silent. Hesitated. And in the end
you stepped aside, letting him in.
— You have five minutes.
— That’s enough. — He stepped in just as you shut the door behind him —. Five minutes are enough to win you back. — You froze in place. You were barefoot, wearing the socks he had —coincidentally— given you for your birthday. He was always the taller one.— I never wanted to lose you. Let alone see you with someone else.
— What? You came to my place
to win me back? —you asked, shocked —. Seriously
?
— I never wanted to break up. It was never part of the plan —he replied, looking down before locking eyes with you again —. I just got overwhelmed. Drowned in work, I had no structure. Everything was about my career, and in the end, I couldn’t give you the attention you deserved. But I didn’t want to lose what we had. That essence.
— But you did — you said softly —. You broke up with me.
— I had no choice! — he exclaimed with a tight smile, like it was obvious and you just didn’t get it.
— And your only choice was to leave Busan?
— I was gone for months — he nodded —. Because an opportunity came up. To build my album from scratch. I met important people. Key connections. And yes
 it helped my career.
Silence filled the space. A chill ran through you.
— I’m seeing someone — you said, not sure if to him or to yourself —. He might become my boyfriend soon.
He just laughed.
— I saw. I saw you two. And you didn’t look thrilled with him — he swallowed —. In fact
—his gaze darkened, making you nervous. You wanted to run— I feel — he pointed at you — that you’re more thrilled now
than you were with him at that restaurant.
— No.
— Yes.
— No

— Yes.
He was getting dangerously close.
And he had you. His hands cupped your face, thumbs gently stroking your cheeks. — If it’s true, look me in the eye
and tell me you’re with someone else.
You frowned. Looked at him.
And said nothing.
You both knew in that moment.
You were still in love with your ex-boyfriend.
— I’ll tell you my truth
and the only truth is, it’s always been you. Just you. That’s it — he said.
