“what?” she doesn’t forget the earlier bit, but the idea that he’s half demon hits her hard. “ who would do something like that?to a BABY?” he was an innocent child; that demon blood was forced on even before he was even born. her surprise is genuine, as is the emotion akin to anger at the idea. he hadn’t seemed evil, but—was he?

“ you don’t seem bad, “ she says finally, quietly. “ not at all.” her dad had wanted, simply, for them to fight that side of themselves. she didn’t know why it took so long to teach offensive magic, though. especially with everything going on with malivore. “ he wants us to be able to fit in, but—we don’t. and we have to be able to fight. “ 

“angel blood is strong. demon blood is stronger. it can create magic.“ and his father was a practitioner of it, with johnathan being born with those abilities, it was even a bigger threat, he does enjoy the power it gives him, though it’s a whole discussion on the matter; nature vs nurture and when it came to him, johnathan knew it was a big mixture of both of them.  “you are not afraid of me?” it’s a testing question for her, to reinforce that she doesn’t seem afraid. “or disgusted? because that is a common reaction.” not quite nephilim, not quite a demon, he is the line in the middle, and he chose a side a long time ago.

she is right on that one thing. they don’t fit in. “people like you are made to STAND OUT, josette. you are special, unique.” blue eyes turn an intense steel gaze as he looks down at the young witch and smiles. all about him shows sincere interest, even if his real reasons are hidden. “you have a fire inside you. I can see that.”

she can’t exactly argue with that, but she wasn’t going to outright diss her sister either. lizzie was good and that was that. so was josie, for that matter. her own head tilts, dark eyes watching his face grow more amused by the second. “ not—protecting, just explaining. “ after all, lizzie would always be the most important person to her.

kai rises in her mind’s eye, unbidden. kai, killing his  family save for his parents, his twin, and her aunt liv and uncle luke. all dead, now. all of them. that makes her look at him in slight surprise. he seemed to be speaking about her, though how could she know?exactly?” a tendency toward darkness doesn’t mean dark, “ why is she defending it as he means her?because he could.  “ just like magic isn’t inherently bad—” 

“no. but it does mean there is a natural inclination for it.“ of course she is right, though on his world, having darkness only meant one thing; that they would grew up to be evil doers or oppressed people because they lack the proper training, told to suppress their powers instead of using them. but before she believes he is picking at her own nature, johnathan advert his gaze and speaks up of his own experience.

adam’s apple bobble as he swallows, abnormally blue eyes looking ahead as he thinks every word through. he had seen the effect of empathy and what it does; you let someone in, you allow them to see you, they will pity you, or at least, care for you.“i’m not just a nephilim, josie. my father  experimented on me when i was inside my mother’s womb. demon blood runs through my veins.” gaze looks down to his hands, one above the other, tracing the runs over it.

Lilith, as evil as she was, burned his human flesh for he was too ‘soft’.  “of course, you are right. it doesn’t mean bad. as long as you learn how to use it properly. but most people fear it, and they teach us to hide it. why else the school waited so long to teach offensive and dark magic?”

josette. he was calling her josette. she catches sight of them; those spiral black shapes that made him what he was. her eyes flit back up to his, to his face full of cool amusement, and she’s curious. so curious on what exactly lay behind his eyes. “ well��i’m dangerous too. we all are.” they all had the potential. but she’d been one of the few to act. 

“true. but i believe your sister needs a splash of reality. not everything will revolve around her. or everyone for the matter.“ and he takes some pleasure in knowing his interactions with josie reach the point of the girl’s twin try to sabotage him, but so far, he knows his fight isn’t over and he continues his slow but assuring influence on the young siphoner. “how charming, are you trying to protect me from your sister?” and johnathan allows the amusement to grow into teasing tone as he cants his head to the side, a chuckle escaping his lips. 

not that lizzie saltzman could ever even try to have a fight with him. “hm. there is potential in everyone, right? some more than others.” in particular those with a family with dark secrets. and oh, josette has exactly that. “be it for family or nurture, some of us just have a tendency to darkness.” and a short pause, the curve of his lip still visible. “though i’m on the side of those who believe that a little darkness is good for the soul.”
