Drawn on a 4-hour flight as a challenge of creation in the confined space of the middle seat in a row of three. Some of you might know that I’ve studied architecture at my first University. The same some will know I quit that after two years in favour of moving to Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹 . And when that didn’t work out, I landed in London 🇬🇧. Here, I studied (and graduated) Graphic Design because I was too scared to go for what I really really really wanted which was Illustration. Well, whatever the subject, those years of architecture stayed with me. After decades of ogling at buildings, I decided to start steering into this direction. I can’t fight the urge anymore, I’m too tired, so I’ll just come out and say it: Mom, Dad, world, I LIKE BUILDINGS. SO IMMA GONNA DRAW BUILDINGS!! —- This particular building here is very much real and I’ve passed and admired it countless of times. As drawn, it’s laced with street art and graffiti. Yet because the artwork changes so often, I decided to draw some of the work of my favourite artists instead. These are the people I look up daily in inspiration and admiration. Their work makes me ache with jealousy and makes me push myself further and further and work until I have pencil dents in my fingers. And I know I am not the only one that thinks so because their work is absolutely fantastic. I made these drawings last year when my flight was delayed by approximately 18 hours. At first it was just a minor delay so I pulled out my sketchbook and started drawing these shapes. As events unfolded (there was a massive storm!) the airline announced the postponement of the flight along with a location change. We were all directed towards some buses and were driven three hours to another city with a pit stop at a fancy hotel in between. As you can imagine nerves we stretched, there were tears, wails and shouts throughout the whole incident and so much tension you could cut it with a knife. I didn’t want to get involved and was lucky to not be rushing anywhere so I kept focused on my drawing, finding a true companion during some tricky times. This got me thinking about the comfort of being by yourself and also, the comfort of spending time by yourself in the absence of internet and/or having a phone to keep your mind occupied. It might sound crazy in such a fast world yet I think it is important to seek time away and to learn how to be comfortable without a phone from time to time. Very happy to finally be able to share this one with you! This was my Mom’s Christmas present, a drawing of a place very dear to us - the Hundertwasser Museum in Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹. She always sits at the same table in the cafe and goes every time she’s visiting my brother ( whom you might know or not, lives there) The place is quite magic and I fully recommend it if you’re visiting the city. This drawing as you can imagine is quite personal, it has little figurines of us, the kids in it and our cats ( I forgot to draw our turtle so I hope she can forgive me) and of course, I’ve loved every moment of it. ❤️ She loved it too. #joannabucur https://www.instagram.com/p/B7LgcqaBaDO/?igshid=k7jj9knp3t8b

This is not my first time in New York. With every city I visited, once you get the really touristy things out of the way, there’s a new layer to explore, something deeper, you’re a bit more relaxed and centred, and the city shows itself to you in a new light should you want to look, inviting you to find your comfort. We got tickets at this old style cinema to see ‘Motherless Brooklyn’ but we still had about two hours to the show. Will wanted to go up on the Empire State Building but I was tired and wanted to try some good old American apple pie 🥧 So we parted ways. The movie was great. A long subway ride from Brooklyn to the top of Central Park. A white hair lady came up telling us she’s homeless and asking for money, yet when she spotted my drawing she called me “Artisté” and told me about how she used to draw horses. Another lady came up to the woman sitting across me and complimented her hair. They quickly exchanged hair dresser details. The two ladies in the middle were chatting happily in Spanish. Will was reading his book on my right playing mindlessly with the hair on my shoulder.
