Well, it's officially summer! Do you have any plans? Summer is a time where people tend to feel like they need to make most of the time they have! With the days only getting shorter from here on out, that's an understandable worry. But it's important to just enjoy your days as they come, and also soak up some sunlight! Like flowers, sunlight helps our mood and lets us flourish (BUT BE SAFE!) Also like flowers, we all bloom at different times and paces. Do not compare yourself to others; They may have already bloomed while you're still getting ready. But when you get there, it'll feel amazing. And in the meantime, make sure to show yourself some kindness and grace. You're doing what you can, and it's more than enough. I can't wait to hear about your adventures! It's almost the weekend! Hopefully that means you get a day off. If not, please do some tactics to minimise burn out. Please reach out to a friend, try to feed your creativity, or take a nap; Anything that refills your cup and replenishes your energy! You are living and you are surviving, and that's something absolutely challenging. Whether you realise it or not, that shows how strong you really are. And all that strength needs a break sometimes (See how we're circling back? lol) People in this world love you, admire you, and are rooting for you to succeed and find happiness because you deserve it. Holy Cats! We’re one full week into June! Have you done anything during that time? Big or small, you accomplished something- and for that I’m proud of you. You’ve made it through every day you’ve tackled so far, and do you know how strong that makes you. Please don’t ever discount that strength, even in days you don’t feel like you have any. It’s still hidden deep under the surface (You just have to dig sometimes.) You’re here and you’re doing your best and I’m so proud of you. You’re incredible. You’re loved. in an instant realization, one that unfortunately comes far too late, steve can see the mistake in asking such a question, reflecting back to him within the look on nancy’s face. while it certainly hadn’t been intended to breech her boundaries or overstep some invisible, yet incredibly tangible line drawn between them, he can feel the air shifting around them into something tense and uncomfortable, already cursing himself for his inability in keeping his big mouth shut.

it’s almost as if he self-sabotages on his own accord, not even aware of it until it’s already out there in the open and unable to be reeled back in. not for the first time, steve wishes more than anything that he could be better at approaching nancy in a way that didn’t push her so much, teetering too close to the edge that he, himself, feels like flinging himself off of more times than not.

therefore, it’s all he can do now to step in with a hefty dose of apologies internally lined up in anxious waiting, resisting the urge to flinch at the cutting edge to her words that hardly goes unnoticed. “i- i’m sorry, nance… i didn’t- of course you don’t have to answer that, i- shouldn’t even have asked, i was just… thinking out loud, i guess, it was- stupid…”

“ What are you most afraid of? ”

          the  question  takes  her  by  surprise  and  she  finds  that  she  DOESN’T  like  it—not  being  taken  by  surprise,  not  having  to  contemplate  ( much  less  answer )  it;  none  of  it.  she  can  feel  herself  putting  up  her  guard  again.  her  brow  furrows  and  her  lips  press  into  a  thin  line.  she’s  been  put  on  the  spot  and  she  wants  the  attention  ANYWHERE  but  on  her.

          she  could  have  a  million  answers  to  that  question—letting  her  guard  down,  bringing  herself  to  say  she  loves  him  first  because  then  their  situation  is  REAL  and  she  has  to  face  that,  jinxing  their  relationship  by  accepting  her  feelings  and  being  honest  with  him,  opening  up,  letting  herself  be  a  normal  teenage  girl,  dying,  losing  her  loved  ones—none  of  them  she  cared  to  admit  out  loud…  so  she  doesn’t.

          “ i  don’t  think  any  of  that  matters  right  now,  steve, ”  she  replies,  and  maybe  there’s  an  unintentionally  added  sharpness  to  it.  “ we  have  more  important  things  to  worry  about  at  the  moment. ”

steve honestly isn’t sure what it is about m.ike w.heeler that manages to get under his skin so badly ( and it’s not even in a way that actually bothers him as much as he makes it seem ), but the truth remains that just about anything the kid says all too easily produces a big reaction out of him. he knows it’s dramatic, that he’s dramatic, but then again, so is mike.

evidently, they feed off of each other in a manner that can only be disastrous, as much as he’ll usually try to keep the peace for nancy’s sake.

“it’s not in the gutter!” steve fires back, rounding on the boy who he still is not used to sharing a height with. “it’s right here, on my shoulders, right where it’s supposed to be, present and accounted for, thank you very much! maybe you should work on not taking things the wrong way.”

‘   i’m trying to figure it out, are you into this or not?  ‘

it’s safe to say that steve truly wasn’t expecting to come home to discover nancy wearing lingerie of all things, to put it quite simply. and to say he’s stunned would be a drastic understatement, jaw slack and body rigid as he hovers uselessly in the doorway of their bedroom. if he could actually manage to regain the function of his brain ( seeming to somehow both be stopped entirely and running at a million miles per second all at once ), he’d surely be able realize that this isn’t exactly the most reassuring reaction to have.

which entirely explains the hesitant inquiry that leave’s nancy’s mouth, next, and it's just enough to have steve kicking himself back into gear long enough to take one, long, rushed stride into the room, his eyes looking everywhere.

“i- jesus, nance, a-are you kidding- of course i am,” he finally breathes out, before he’s forced to backtrack a couple of mental steps, shaking his head as he struggles to string an actual, coherent sentence together. “sorry, i-i just- i wasn’t- expecting this, i-? where did- why-?”

❛ pssst steve, ❜ she tosses a makeshift paper airplane at him. ❛ what are you doing ? we open in an hour, & it's a saturday. we need to get ready for the big rush of hawkins elderly coming to get their favorite movies. ❜ she rolls her eyes.

he tries and fails to catch the crafted piece of paper as it comes soaring his way, which effectively sends it spiraling down to the floor as it collides with the side of his hand, instead. narrowing his eyes, steve doesn’t try to mask the irritated groan that leaves his lips as he slumps across the front desk, desperately wishing to be just about anywhere else than here on this fine saturday morning.

“me? oh, nothing,” he mumbles in a rather monotone voice, cheek smooshed up against the smooth surface of the countertop. “just trying to imagine an existence where i’m, i don’t know- not here. literally anywhere but here. because i swear to you, robin, if one more old person asks me what a vhs tape is, i’m walking. it is way too early for this. i am way too tired for this-"
