Tommy Miller x Reader Content: fluff, no adult content, just the biggest block of cheese you'll ever see, pre-outbreak, not edited, probably-most likely poorly written Words: 1,747 Summary: Tommy Miller comes over to fix your grandmother's pantry and he receives a different form of payment. a/n: I haven't posted or really written any fics since 2013 so please be kind. 💫 Also this fic is inspired by gabriel luna calling his on screen wife/girlfriend 'cherry pie' in the short film swell and I thought of Tommy. There also might be a few mistakes as my laptop is an ancient dinosaur.
You were not at all surprised to find the Miller Brother’s truck parked in your grandmother’s driveway. Walking over the small pathway that led up to the front door, you wondered what needed to be repaired in the home this time around.
Ever since the brother’s came over to patch up a hole and repaint the living room wall, it started to be the little things for them to fix – door knobs that were squeaking out of nowhere and doors that suddenly were missing screws at the hinges. You spoke to your grandmother on how easy it was to go to the home improvement store and repair these yourself, but she kindly shooed away your suggestion. And you had a feeling why she was so insisting on having Joel and Tommy over almost every week.
Tumblr media
You juggled between the two paper bags from the grocery store and your handbag to find the keys to the door. Before you entered the home, you could hear loud drilling and the smell of something sweet baking. Closing the door behind you, you set your personal belongings on the entryway table and made your way to the kitchen.
“Grandma, I’m home with your groceries!” You called out. Placing the bags on the kitchen counter, you expected to see both the Miller brothers, but only found Tommy standing with his back towards you working on the pantry doors.
“Hey you.” His thick Southern drawl catches your full attention and he’s walking towards you with a smile.
You smiled back at him over your shoulder. “Afternoon Tommy.” You watch him for a brief moment. He’s wrapping up the cord around the drill and putting his tools back in its carrying case. You simply guessed he was wrapping it up for the day. “Done already?”
“Sorry you missed all the fun.”
Before you could say anything, your grandmother entered the kitchen, hutched over and walked slowly with a cane towards the counter. She asked you for help with taking out the cherry pie from the oven. “Grandma, you shouldn’t be up and about. You need to rest.” You pointed to her bad knee that was wrapped in thick gauze.
“Nonsense,” she waved you off like she always did and placed her hand on the counter to help her stand. “Besides, I promised Joel a pie for all his hard work.”
“Hey, what ‘bout me?” Tommy had playfulness in his voice that made you smile.
She turned to Tommy and he was close enough for her to place a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Of course, sweetheart. I made enough for Sarah, too. Take all of it home if you’d like.”
Grabbing the pie from the oven, the heat made the sweet scent of the pie fill the kitchen almost instantly and your stomach growled at the sight of it. She always took the time to add designs to her pies, this time vines circled the outside of the crust with handmade flowers scattered along the top. Your grandmother insisted that you dust a small amount of powdered sugar on top before she went back into the living room to rest.
The kitchen was silent for a moment while you picked out the jar of powdered sugar from the cabinet by the pantry and Tommy packing his belongings.
“Where’s Joel?” You asked out of curiosity. You could only imagine how disappointed your grandmother would have been when she only found Tommy at the door.
Tommy zipped up his tool bag then leaned over the kitchen counter., watching you cut up the pie in somewhat equal slices for him to take home. “Parent teacher conference.”
You look in the direction of the living room and whispered your next words. “You think she’s disappointed?”
He gets your meaning and grins. It was almost obvious that your grandmother had a crush on Joel, which is why she had him over all the time. “Nah, I think she’ll manage.”
You on the other hand didn’t mind them coming over so often. While your grandmother had a sweet crush on the older Miller brother, you couldn’t help but have your own crush on Tommy. On the days where they'd come over, you would sometimes watch your grandmother watch and stand close by Joel while doing his job. It happened more frequently that Tommy would step aside and watch with you.
He never seemed annoyed by not being able to do his job in the house. He told you once that it was fun to see Joel get embarrassed by your grandmother's words and how she would find objects in the house that needed to be fixed. You chuckled to yourself when you remembered the look on Joel's face when your grandmother showed him the broken leg of a photo frame that needed repairing.
While your grandmother's crush was one-sided, it at least got you to know Tommy a little more. He would always tell you stories of his time spent serving over seas and when he started to work alongside Joel to not only help him with projects in town, but to help him raise Sarah after his wife left him suddenly a few months prior. He mentioned how much it helped having you listen to him as Joel sometimes didn't want to be bothered with it.
It didn't take you long to come to the realization of how much your feelings grew towards Tommy, but instead of showing your crush like your grandmother did towards Joel, you kept it sheltered within you.
You placed the slices of pie in a large container for easy traveling, Tommy promising he'd bring it back when he'd come over next.
"You wouldn't mind me having a slice, would you?"
Tommy nods. "I won't say a word." He walks around the kitchen counter to stand next to you. "Mind if I have a slice before I head out?"
"Not at all."
You picked a slice for Tommy and yourself. You took a bite, relishing the taste of the sweet cherries and the touch of the sugar with the savory crust. The two of you laughed at each other while the both of you made sounds of approval at your grandmother's cooking. After a few bites, you got out your grandmother's checkbook from her bag on the counter to start writing him a check.
"Don't worry about that," He said while chewing. "Your grandma promised Joel the cherry pie in return for our work."
Your raised an eyebrow. "And he agreed to that?"
"He did." He laughed at the suspicious look you gave him. "We love your grandma's cooking, what can we say?"
You placed the checkbook back in the bag before taking another bite of the pie. "You shouldn't be working for free, Tommy."
He shrugs and sets the plate down on the counter. "It was just a hinge replacement." He grinned. "The same hinge we replaced two weeks ago."
You shook your head while smiling. "You know, I'll just have to talk to my grandma about having you guys come over for lunch instead of you hauling your equipment over for a hinge."
"I think we'd like that." He wasn't sure how Joel would completely feel about it. It made him curious on her suggestion if it was purely just to keep her grandmother company. "Would you like that?"
"Yeah, I think the company would be good for her."
"And you're not good company?"
You take one last bite of what was left of the pie and covered your mouth momentarily with your hand as you chewed while talking. "I can't be here all the time. Work and all of that." You wrapped up the rest of Tommy's slice with foil and you sense his eyes on you. When you look up at him, he's staring down at you with a cheeky smile. "What?"
He expands his hand towards you and he hesitates only for a moment into he musters up the courage to continue. His thumb comes in contact with the corner of your lips, wiping away the powdered sugar that was planted there while you were eating. The sudden contact leaves you breathless and frozen and you weren't really sure how to feel from his touch. A few strokes of his thumb and your face was now clean, except for the sugar left behind on your inner upper lip that seemed to now dissolve on your lip gloss.
Tommy's hand fell from your face to slowly caress your mid-arm, and he's pulling you close until the space between you was filled. You closed your eyes in anticipation and you felt his lips hovering over yours ever so slightly. He was close enough for you to faintly smell the smoke on his breath from his last cigarette.
He leaned in closer and gently pressed his lips upon yours. The kiss lingered chastely and Tommy lightly smiled at the odd texture of your your sticky lip gloss against his lips.
Your hands blindly found their way to his shoulders to keep yourself close and anchored to him. The tension melted away from your shoulders and you found yourself leaning into him, holding onto Tommy like all of the sudden your life depended on it.
He opened his mouth slightly and delicately licked at your upper lip. You sighed, your tongue meeting his with an open-mouthed kiss that made your fingers dig into the rough texture of his work shirt. His hands smoothed down to the small of your back, holding you in place while his lips pecked at yours over and over, tasting your lip gloss in which he came to the conclusion was strawberry flavored.
"Tommy!"
He broke away from you to not only catch his breath but at the sound of your grandmother's voice echoing through the house. You waited for him to kiss you again, instead you felt his hot breath pant over your blushed cheeks.
"Tommy, don't let the pie go cold!"
The feel of his thumb caressing your cheekbone caused you to open your eyes, and you hadn't realized just now that his eyes had a hint of green around his irises... or you weren't sure if it was the reflection of the stained glass decor hanging from the window behind you.
Your hand smooths down his shirt and through the short silence between the two of you, he presses one last kiss to your lips.
"Darlin'... you taste sweeter than this cherry pie."
