Recorded on April 19, 1928 in Atlanta, GA, this is one of two known recordings from the Stapleton Brothers, Mitchell and Mason. Their other recording session took place in Charlotte, NC in May 1931. Not a lot is known about The Stapleton Brothers. Bruce Bastin, in his book Red River Blues: The Blues Tradition in the Southeast, mentions the Stapleton Brothers when documenting the life of the Union, SC bluesman, Henry "Rufe" Johnson. He states, "Mitchell and Mason Stapleton played guitar and mandolin and one of them was courting the daughter of the owner of the farm on which the Johnsons were tenants. They frequently played with Rufe and one day asked him to go with them, possibly to record, in Charleston as he recalled. Almost certainly this was their recording date for Victor in Charlotte in May 1931, on the same day as Jack Gowdlock and Gussie Nesbit" (193). Johnson, Gowdlock, and Nesbit were all Union County musicians, and seeing that one of the brothers was dating a daughter of the owner of the farm where Johnson's family were tenants, we can conclude that the Stapleton Brothers lived in or close to Union County. On the other side of this record is a song titled "In a Cool Shady Nook."
