The Ring and the Crown by Melissa De La Cruz

This book had a pretty interesting plot, I watched the book trailer (yeah, you read that, those are real things that exist, I was shocked too) and when I read the summary on goodreads, I thought it sounded pretty interesting, but also confusing. Who wants to be in whose pants? I need a diagram for this, what the hell. 

It turns out, it wasn’t as hard to follow as I thought. The world building was a bit lacking. I’m not sure why religion would still exist in a world with magic being a very big part of the world and also, the author didn’t spend a lot of time explaining anything about why the world works this way, why the war was even happening, what the actual hell the Pandora’s box is. I wasn’t even sure if that was something I was supposed to have prior knowledge of. Because this is a standalone novel and not a series, everything is really rushed, especially the ending. She smashed in the end to every character’s story in just a couple paragraphs at the end of the book. There isn’t any closure for Isabelle, she literally ends the book by marrying that girl to her own rapist after killing off the only two people who treated her with any kindness and I don’t know why she did that, what was that supposed to achieve beyond shock factor??? It was a good plot idea but it wasn’t delivered well, also I felt like the author kind of borrowed ideas from a couple of other magic authors. Like there was a part that felt a lot like a scene from the A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones), but I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone. 

I enjoyed the book, I mean, I tore through it in just a few days but it could have been written better and I can’t help but be brutally honest about the books I read. This is an opinion you didn’t ask for, I’ll deliver it however I like.
