From the flat files: for an article in the Wall Street Journal about Green Day opening a musical. “Dookie” was a big album for me and my first band mates in southern Ohio before any of us had heard much of anything… it was intro punk for the rural ignorant, of which I was absolutely one. Drawing this illustration, years later, for the conservatively-skewed Journal about Green Day being this commoditized thing on Broadway had me thinking “Jesus, what happened to us?” the whole time I was working on it.
