John Vawter of Birmingham, Alabama, is an experienced real estate development executive who has served as principal of Capstone Collegiate Communities, LLC, since 2012, overseeing the development of 15 off-campus communities. A supporter of his local community, Capstone’s John Vawter served 5 years on the board of the Jimmie Hale Mission for the Homeless. The Jimmie Hale Mission has worked to address addiction and homelessness in Alabama for more than 75 years. This past October, the nonprofit hosted the inaugural Jimmie Hale Mission 5K Rescue Run to raise funds to support operations at its three facilities. The race took place in Homewood and was dedicated to the memory of Homewood native Douglas Barnes, who was struck by two vehicles and killed in January while crossing US 31. It was also held in conjunction with World Homeless Day. More than 360 people participated in either the 5K or fun run. Start times were staggered in 16 different groups with 5-second intervals between each runner to ensure participants' health and safety. Masks were also offered by race coordinators. The race went ahead as scheduled despite heavy rainfall from Hurricane Delta. Alex Smith finished first place with a time of 15:52, while second-place finisher Alex Tucker crossed the finish line in 17:14. The second annual race is scheduled for October 9, 2021.
