If you want a PERFECT example of how to establish rules in your fictional world and abide by them in meaningful ways ... watch the John Wick movies. (plus you should anyway, the choreography and cinematography are pure gold ... naturally, if you can stomach the 80+ kill count in the first film and the 120+ in the second). You've heard the story before ... Alien princess flees from her kingdom and lands herself in a diplomatically neutral planet to avoid getting locked into a feudal society monarchy seat (with low life expectancy), then lives a rebellious life because the authorities can't really imprison her without inciting the anger of her home world, then gets drafted into a Super Hero Team for At-Risk youth in order to try and straighten her out. It's a tale as old as time ... a friend of mine created his own fan character for Happenstance.  I took the liberty of drawing her.  yay! brunicus made another solid fan character for Happenstance.  yay!  the core concept was fun enough i had to run with it and do a sketch. A brief primer on Continuum ... Back in World War II, Hitler thought it'd be a good idea to send out convoys to dig up trinkets in the desert.  One of the convoys realized there was more to this notion than to be wasted on a regime that was starting to lose its grip.  They broke from the 3rd Reich and their nationalist ideals and dedicated themselves to discovering ancient lost powers.  While one of the lesser villain groups, currently, they still can pose unreal dangers should their expeditions remain left unchecked. In happenstance, demons are largely magical creatures from another realm.  (Most people call it Heck out of spite and to differentiate their realm from actual damnation of the soul.)

As such, these demons do have genetic traits and lifespans ... which entails awkward siblings.  Vamf, here, is the elder sister to Malvazar --> http://fav.me/dawz4i2 She's generally everything you'd expect out of an embarrassing childish sibling; down to giving pet-names like "oni-chan."  (lame pun on her part)

Any rate, she also gets embarassed easily and is quick to panic.  As seen above, she has an incandescent blush when she's trying to feign innocence.

Meet Robin and Jackson Ryder.  Generally speaking they're most brilliant people in Happenstance when it comes to theoretical science exploration (in other words, sci fi adventurers).  However, do bear in mind that they very much have a post-modernist scientific mindset (basically, in school they teach you that science finds out laws and facts ... post modernists believe that theories are just convenient lies that we base experimental equations on until we finally get enough evidence to overturn it ... in other words everything's in flux and we actually don't know squat about reality).

... which also means they are very vocal against "consensus science", siding with Michael Chrichton in that it's the realm of scam artists (once you establish a consensus view it eliminates the possibility of debate).  So they mercilessly call out hollow-media-supported-science like human-induced-climate-change, or scientific-predetermination theories that deny the existence of free will.

Any rate ... what gave them more public renown, though, was a lab accident some years back.  While no lives were lost, the unstable quantum matter they were dealing with essentially gave everyone present new super powers.  Robin can now effortlessly generate a black crystaline matter that disobeys basic laws of physics.  Jackson, meanwhile, can manipulate an unidentified radiationless energy ... and also fly, which is cool.

You probably noticed their clashing personalities (they evidence this as further proof of free will, the fact that they love each other even with this).  Robin's actually the brains of their research team.  However, she lacks a number of social graces (like not calling people idiots to their face).  While Jackson's generally more of the lab assistant, he can deal quite a bit more easily with the press and outsider relations (as well as explaining how these complex procedures work in more simple terms).  They're both more than content with this dynamic, because this is how lasting marriages work: division of labor and candidly recognizing each others' strengths and weaknesses.

So yeah, if you have any weird phenomenon happen?  call these two (and their colleagues).

A career muscle for higher villain in Happenstance, The Skullpiper developed a nasty reputation for being efficient at his job.  He's also known for being a brutal backstabber, given that he was part of the Atlas Youth Program that went south.  As such, villains really only trust him with anything that requires zero grace and disposable assets. Side note, he's also one of the half giants in Happenstance.  While true giants (the 50 foot tall variety) can be found in magic realms, most of the "false giants" or "half giants" that you see in the streets are more to the tune of 8 foot tall (commonly, though, everyone in world just calls them giants).  Their temperaments are surprisingly stable on the whole, though they do seem to be a little more susceptible to crowd mentality than humans.  ... which means that when one goes bad it's because they flat out choose to do so. ----- If you'd like to find out more about Happenstance (and all the insanity that goes on in there) check out my dA fanclub --> http://happenstancefans.deviantart.com/ Plenty of posts, and all of them with detailed write-ups like this one.
