Gegagedigedagedago
That's what idiots think it's saying or at least they believe it's just vocalisation.
It's actually saying something in English though. Only a lot of letters in words are skipped due to the accent.
I will put the skipped in brackets like this (h)ello means hello, but you hear ello.
And that means that Gegagedigedagedago comes out as "(be)c(ause) I (h)ad-a da(mn) nea(r) fo(r)got(e)n my (J)oe"
which of course makes sense if you listen to the rest of the lyrics.
"i've been married (since) a long time ago" doesn't mean that their partner divorced or died. It's saying that they married Joe, but Joe went missing, and it's been years since.
It's sounds like it's being said in response to the question "are you single?" like the non-Joe partner of the marriage is unable to move on and start a new relationship because they believe that Joe is still alive somewhere and they don't want to commit adultery.
This is compounded by the next lyric "where did you come from, where did you go, Cottoneye Joe?" which implied that Joe entered into the partner's life suddenly, they had a whirlwind romance and got married, but immediately after Joe vanished without a trace.
This could have simply been a scam to collect a dowry, or maybe Joe's sudden presence in town and rapid romance, had upset the locals of an otherwise very predictable town, so they got rid of him shortly after the marriage.
the term "cottoneye" doesn't imply that Joe is or was a slave, as some people seem to think that it does, but is actually slang for a person who gets drunk regularly, which considering the two possible situations explained above, seems to explain the situation perfectly.

Nah, she's still dead in my canon.

In fact she'd have to be dead to be in my canon.
