Help everyone? The fifth seat can’t help but to crack a smile at the absurdity of such a concept. Something drew her to extend a hand to the stranger — an offering of peace. The longer she watched the more the girl seemed to be clueless rather than a potential danger. “That is quite the altruistic thought-” Shiori mused. “But I’m afraid it’s not a feasible one. Keeping the universe stable is the most we can do to benefit all souls- to help each and every individual would be an exponential waste of time.”

However naive, such optimism was refreshing to see. If put to work on a project that offered visible results the girl would likely excel.

✘ Eyes moves back to look up at the other, “No…I–actually don’t know.” Did she know them? She wasn’t sure, but she felt she’s seen them somewhere. All she knew was that it REALLY broke her heart to see them like that. She knew Shiori was right. She had to be, right? “Yeah…I know..”

Serenity is quiet, but she doesn’t look away from Shiori. Shiori has strong eyes, ones that can tell a story. “But…can a shinigami help everyone? Whether it’s personal or keeping that balance?”

[ Hey guys, I am alive, I just haven’t been here in a few days oops. A lot is going on at the moment in my personal life- mainly I have an extreme amount of bills due this month and next month that I am struggling to afford, and I’m freaking out a bit, amongst other things. Also seasonal depression is at its height this month and next so I’ve been feeling gross and unmotivated. Its hard for me to sit at the computer for more than 10-15 minutes at a time which makes it difficult for me to focus on replies.

That said- I apologize so much for my absence! I plan to work on replies whenever I get the chance, but my main objective at the moment is just to make it through the summer with my sanity intact. I will be around but it may be spotty until things settle down. I really miss you guys, and if any of you want to hmu over at my personal in the meantime please do! I don’t think you have to be following to shoot me a message. I hope everyone is taking care and staying cool xoxox <33 ]

Shiori didn’t flinch at this outburst, as she was quite confident in her words, and it was only natural that he’d want to defend those people whom he was closest too. However, this didn’t change her mind in the least — she was only being honest with the man. She glanced over at the third seat without turning her head. “Yes... and no.” Violet eyes watched, unwavering. “Every division is an important link in the chain that is the Gotei Thirteen. Though, put simply, some links would be more easily replaced than others.” The dark-haired shinigami shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. “The twelfth has very specific duties imperative to the operation of the Seireitei- that require very specific skills to complete. I’m not questioning the charm nor the prowess of your captain.”

The fifth seat paused at the mention of Urahara. The man had only been her captain for about a decade, but he had shown to be quite capable — if not a bit puzzling to her. They may not have worked together for long, but she had him to thank for the creation of the SRDI, as well as her current position. Nonetheless, she had no idea what this comment was meant to invoke. Anger? She blinked curiously, unable to see the relevance to their current discussion. “Correct.” Arms folded in front of her chest as she eyed her companion inquisitively. “Though that hardly makes a difference in the function of our division.”

“What?” The third seat was instantly on the defensive side again once she’d finished her sentence. Though she most likely didn’t mean to offend, he was indeed a little offended at her words. The amount of respect he had towards Ukitake and the entire division wasn’t something he took lightly. To him, the thirteenth division and every member in it was a part of his family.

“Are you saying that the thirteenth is somehow below the twelfth division?! Ukitake-taichou has no one to compete with because no one can compete with him! Except perhaps Kyouraku-taichou! Besides! Kurotsuchi-taichou wouldn’t even be a here if it wasn’t for Urahara Kisuke!”

Ears listened intently to the other’s words. Cocking her head and narrowing her eyes behind the lenses of her glasses Shiori tried to make sense of the situation. The girl wasn’t just interested in humans, no, she seemed interested in these specific humans. Why should she care if the woman has been crying? They can’t even see her. “Do you... know these people?” She certainly seemed to know a lot about them for a casual onlooker.

As someone who had been born in, and lived her whole life within the Soul Society it often didn’t cross her mind that some of her colleagues had actually lived in the World of the Living. At least, that’s what she assumed the girl was going on about. She wanted to be something?

“Our business is not with the living.” It was not meant as a cruel remark, but was merely the truth. Shinigami didn’t involve themselves with the lives of the living. Not directly at least. Her voice softened as she looked Serenity in the eye, but her gaze remained firm. “It is our job to protect the balance of souls between the two words, not to get caught up in personal battles.”

✘ There’s a gentle nod, “Mhm…” She laces fingers between fingers, eyes never leaving their sight. “I come here almost everyday, as much as I can to see them. To make sure they’re okay but….” She’s always examined them. “They always look so exhausted now. She looks like she’s always been crying and he…The only thing keeping him going is his wife, but he’s exhausted too.” They looked older. Serenity shakes her head a bit and finally she’s looking up at Shiori. “I really want to be something. That’s why I became a shinigami. That’s why I’m here.”

30 Uncommon Character Development Questions

Are they afraid of death? Do they have any regrets?     Afraid of death- unfortunately not. Shiori doesn’t want to die, but she doesn’t particularly worry about it either. In her mind it is just an inevitable part of life. She can do what she can to avoid it for the time being—but its going to happen eventually and the thought doesn’t bother her. (If anything she’s interested in experiencing it, but currently has other things to keep her busy.)

     Regrets- no ragrets. Shiori is the definition of “living in the moment”. She makes what she believes is the best decision to make at the time, and once its over and done with and she doesn’t really think much of it unless its relevant to her present situation. Plus she sees every mistake as an important lesson, no matter how unpleasant the experience.
