Paris in the Park Peer Reviews
Peer Review — Paris in the Park — Hayley Martin
Hayley’s large scale pieces were, I felt, possibly the most successful large scale pieces displayed. Her ability to work with scale, and to be so experimental with scale is inspiring to observe. I also felt that the pieces were successful in the sense that they related to her pathway of Set Design well. The work gives a real sense of the faded memories of where we visited in Paris, the otherwise notable and recognisable buildings obscured by the emulsion and ink wash. Almost as if they are hidden behind some kind of veil.
I believe that the ideas shown in this exhibition piece, were also continued on well from Word, Image, Sequence, holding that idea of lost memories well. I do think that perhaps in the future, Hayley could begin to incorporate more colour into the work, possibly looking at the connotations of certain colours, the way certain colours make the viewer feel, and the sort of colours we relate to different memories.
I think that this work showed Hayley’s exceptional ability to work with composition, as well as scale, as the effect of the work ‘sitting’ in the tree as if the pieces were an almost natural part of the landscape, really worked with the environment. Because of this, I feel that it could be beneficial for Hayley to work outside, incorporating pieces outside as well, perhaps for the final show, if not just for experimental purposes. Overall, I am amazed by the work, for it’s scale, drawing skill and use of material, and feel that it was a very successful exhibition for her.
Peer Review — Paris in the Park — Mitchell Vaughan
Mitchell produced a series of exceptional photo-realistic paintings for this exhibition, branching out into methods of expressionistic painting, to bring forward an exceptional fusion of the two styles. I felt that he dealt with a very difficult topic area exceptionally well, and that his piece worked in the environment, and really conveyed the anguish that homeless individuals, particularly homeless children, face every day.
With the raw emotion shown in the pieces, you can really tell that this is a topic close to the artist’s heart. I also particularly felt that this exhibition was successful, as it not only showcased Mitchell’s exceptional painting ability, but also his ability to take emotional and beautiful photographs. I feel that this could be something that would really work in Final Major Project, as quite often, Mitchell’s photoshoots which inspire the paintings, are just as beautiful as the paintings themselves.
I think that going forward, Mitchell should definitely consider working more with oils, and definitely on a larger scale, as I felt that his large scale piece was incredibly successful. I also really liked the merging together of photo-realistic and an experimental style. I felt that it worked incredibly well, and could make for some interesting developed pieces in the future. I feel that perhaps he could also continue to experiment with colour, not just for the main body of the painting, but also for the backgrounds, or work with more textured backgrounds, to really explore the full field of painting.
Peer Review — Paris in the Park — Alisha Smith
Alisha produced a series of fashion based photography pieces, displayed in frames on broken fencing. I really loved this pieces, as I felt that the photography was incredibly skilful, and felt that the pop of colour against the very earthy-coloured fencing worked incredibly well. I feel as though Alisha has a definite skill in using colour, and in colour combinations, and that this is definitely something she should continue to experiment and work with in the future.
Though the link was a little vaguer than others between the exhibition and Paris, I still think that it worked well, especially since the fashion shown in the photographs was incredibly reminiscent of Parisian designer outlets, and reminded me a lot of the way the clothing is advertised there. The visit to Paris showed the city to be a hub of fashion and identity, and I feel that this work displayed that incredibly well.
I definitely feel that fashion photography is something that Alisha could take further in her Final Major Project, perhaps looking into the commercial areas in which fashion photography is used, as this research would also be key to her future in photography, and particularly if she chooses to take fashion photography further in her degree. I particularly felt that the combination of photography and installation, in the lights and flowers also displayed on the fencing, worked incredibly well, and is definitely something that could be a potential idea in Final Major Project. I also really liked the placement of this piece, it’s central point in the park and extravagant colour means that it stood out particularly well against the natural surroundings and the other exhibition pieces.

Life Drawing
Throughout the course, we studied life drawing both from images, and in front of the model. The collection of my pieces done within this unit can be seen below.
We often linked these pieces to the project we were undertaking at the time, to further our artistic skills and knowledge. I really enjoyed this unit, and feel that it is definitely something I would like to continue studying in University, and providing this became one of the criteria I looked for in a university.

Sketchbook Work
Posca Pen Painting
Upon returning to this technique again for the third time, I feel that I have really improved how I do this, and made it into a very successful and unique way of using Posca Pens. I also like the more abstract look to these pieces

Sketchbook Work
Tonal Pencil, Layering Tests
I don’t feel that this final pencil drawing was as successful as my previous one, however I do feel that this is something that has greatly improved since the beginning of the course, and particularly the beginning of this unit.

Sketchbook Work
Tonal Pencil, Continuous Line
I really enjoyed the continuous line technique practiced over the previous few pages, and feel that on tracing paper, it gave it a really interesting affect.
I also felt that I had not really developed a lot of work studying the human form in his rawest in my sketchbook, which is something that I had done more extensively in my live work. I began to focus my life drawing now around the ideas I have been developing for Final Major Project. I really love the tonal drawing here, as this is not something I have worked on with a lot of success before

Sketchbook Work
Posca Pen Paintings
This was a technique that I tested really quickly, and felt that it was something that definitely had potential, but needed massive improvement. I may come back to this at some point in the future.

Sketchbook Work
Pose Pages (Various Media)
I decided to photocopy one of my best live work sheets several times, and using several different medias, and both drawing onto tracing paper and directly onto the photocopy, I tested out different techniques and styles to my art.
I really enjoyed this and feel that they are some of my most successful life drawing pieces to date

Sketchbook Work
Fine Liner and Pose Sheet Tests
With some space whilst focusing more on developing ideas in our projects, and preparing for assessments, our life drawing became quite general, and more about improving our skills to add to the skill set and ideas we could use for our Final Major Project. Here I began testing out mediums that I had used so far throughout the unit, and ideas developed in my live work(As seen below) about multiple poses on one sheet etc

Sketchbook Work
Conceal and Reveal/Paris in the Park and Envelope Tests
To push our life drawing towards supporting our current Pathway projects, Conceal and Reveal and Paris in the Park, we began looking at the idea of concealment, in the form of envelopes, and what this represents with the human form, and the idea of journey and place

Draw Like A Savage Workshop, and Layering Tests
I then began to test with layers, once again using the grid method.
During this time, we also had a visit from an ex-foundation student, who held the Life Drawing Workshop “Draw Like A Savage”. I felt that this really pushed me to leave my comfort zones in art, as abstract is not something I usually do, but would definitely like to do more of!
