3am Thoughts - cover

I repeated the same process with the 3am cover and typography.
For this design, I wanted to approach this cover with the same typography and illustrations to tie all three pieces together. I wanted their to be a link between each design so all three illustrations combine well. I drew a similar looking cloud to the one featured in ‘My 3am Thought’. I didn’t want it to be an exact replica of the other however I wanted them both to have similar characteristics. I added stars large and small to create depth and dimension, this gave the image the perception of night as there was no moon to depict this therefore, adding the stars helped illustrate that perception.

My 3am Thought - all layers

Overall, I am satisfied with this design. I think the colours chosen were thought out perfectly and have dreamy appearance perfect for a ‘3am Thought’. I am happy with how the layers would look once printed using the RISO, and how well they suit the illustration. Personally, I feel the white background is suited to this design as the design itself is very obscure, it suits the weird nature of the overall look.
If I were to adapt this design further, I would fill in the blank spaces of the swing, socks, postbox etc. I feel as though this design could benefit from added texture as if I were to have experimented further with the brush tools, I could have found a more appropriate pen to use for the swirly clouds. However, I didn’t want to use something too soft as the RISO wouldn’t pick up the layers as well.

My 3am Thought - “What if we could live on clouds?”

For my ‘3am Thought’ I came up with “What if we could live on clouds?”.
I first designed a swirly cloud which was inspired by decorative Art Deco and traditional Chinese artwork. Once I had completed my initial research, I then combined these two influences to develop swirly styled clouds ranging from large to small. I began with a central cloud I was satisfied with, then surround it with other similar clouds. I cropped parts of each cloud to create space and dimension so the final image didn’t appear flat.
Once I was happy with the placement of clouds I started to draw small objects to either connect the clouds or to add some fun elements such as lights, ladders, postboxes etc. These personal touches give the illustration character and helps the audience connect with the narrative.
I split the image into three layers so they would be prepared for the RISO printer. The first layer would be the prepared white paper background. This helps the image stand out against the bold line and colours layered on top. The following layers of pink and yellow will fill in the block clouds and highlight the decorative swirls of the illustration. The final layer of the black outline will enclose around the colours and add the remaining details.
I didn’t want to do the obvious which would have been placing a few houses on a cloud or windows within them. Instead I wanted to create my own vision of this thought which is more obscure and original and I think I have achieved this.

Olio+ presentation - animal tarot cards

As soon as the brief for Olio plus was presented to me, I had a strong idea of what I was going to present to my peers. I’ve always had an interest in Tarot card reading due to my upbringing and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate them into a project. After researching tarot cards, I found animals to be a popular subject. This would be a flexible starting point for me to collaborate with my group to produce a tarot card design.
I started by brainstorming ideas for designs and packaging. From preliminary research, I found that most tarot cards had a illustrative frame capturing the animal placed in the centre. The cards also include a title relating to the animal on the card. Usually, the pack of cards would come in a box which the lid lifts off to minimise the damage when removing the product. From a business perspective, a main concern is preserving the original quality for as long as possible for customer satisfaction. Therefore I wanted to keep the packaging as professional and durable as possible. I also needed to consider the placement of the typography on either the front or sides of the box.
I made the decision to use Eco friendly recyclable card to ensure the sustainability of the product. This would form a handmade box to hold the tarot cards. I also looked further into how other brands decorated their packaging, cards etc.
As for the cards themselves, I wanted to split the animals into groups so it would be easier to delegate an element to each of my peers. I designed symbols for each of the elements: earth, air, fire and water. Earth represents animal instincts, grounding and foundation. Water represents emotion, intuition and going with the flow of life. Air represents intellect, mental intention and connection to life force and finally fire represents willpower, inner strength and transformation through action. This meant if I was chosen, each individual can make their own decision on what animal they want to illustrate depending on the element group delegated. By allowing flexibility in decision making personal creativity/stylisation will show in each design. I positioned the element symbols in the centre above the animal therefore, you can clearly recognise which element group the animal belongs to.
When presenting this pitch to my peers, I found that I had an overall positive response and felt I had designed a unique idea for this particular brief. One of the questions asked during my presentation was if the group collectively have to draw to a certain style to which I answered no, this project is for everyone to show off their skills as I realise that everyone has their own niche. My aim is to produce a project that everyone would enjoy, that wouldn’t be overly complicated and would be easy for my peers to bring their own style, as it will be exciting to see how everyone has interpreted the same brief.

Inside image

I have approached this piece using the formal elements line and colour. For the figurative drawings I have used the outline method in contrast with controlled and thoughtful block shapes.
For this project, I originally intended to stick with a nude/skin coloured pallet to compliment the subject matter. After experimenting, I wasn’t sure whether beige was too subdued to balance against the vibrant colours but once I composed all the elements it formed the perfect base to layer the colour and line on top.
One of the most important features of the composition is the vibrant colours mainly made up of splodges. Particular coloured shapes have been places deliberately in areas to highlight the bodies form. Oppositely, some areas of line have been changed from black to colour, based on the shape’s colour they were overlaid upon. I enjoyed this aspect of designing areas of colour in various shapes complimenting the bodies form to fill in spaces of minimal line because it played to my passion of abstract art.
In conclusion, I am satisfied with the final response to my brief as it has fulfilled the criteria and I’ve designed a piece I am proud of.

Inside image - inspiration

https://www.sophieteaart.com/women-collection
The majority of my inspiration for my inside cover comes from artist Sophie Tea. Her work is about breaking the traditional gallery exhibitions and presenting her work as an independent artist on social media. So far her projects have been based around nude/figurative compositions she called ‘Nudes’ and recently produced a new project ‘Women’. The images above are a few pieces taken from her recent work. I found her work instrumental when developing my own because of her content being so similar to what I aspire to produce.
As a result of my research I discovered Tea has multiple live art classes online which allow you to understand her painting technique to produce an abstract style. I attended one of these art classes to gain experience and get a feel for her work ethic. I found this an insightful experience which helped me gain understanding and methods I could apply to my own project. An example of this is when she taught how to easily map out the composition of the figure to fit the page appropriately and give the piece maximum impact.
My Final Major Project is based around creating a series of nude/figurative prints or collages that have an abstract/contemporary feel. I plan to collate primary research of nude/figurative compositions and use these to inform abstract collages. The collages of figurative poses will be formed of line with deliberate block shapes.
Previously, I have demonstrated these skills within my FMP but for the module I would like to take on a digital approach. Therefore, I plan to use Procreate to construct my figurative collage as over the module I have grown in confidence working in this medium. I want combine both my digital and drawing skills/techniques, and I am confident this will create a strong final outcome.
