Defining Terms

There tends to be a lot of confusion over terms and what they mean. So my first post here will be about definitions.

Shoujo = Manga and Anime targeted at girls

Josei = Manga and Anime targeted to adult women

Boys Love/Yaoi = Manga and Anime featuring stories about gay and bi men typically written by and for women

Gay manga/Bara =  manga targeting gay and bisexual men typically written by gay and bisexual men. The term Bara is an obsolete term that somehow became a popular term for Gay manga in the West. 

Yuri = Manga and Anime featuring romances between lesbian and bi women. Unlike Boys Love and Gay manga yuri doesn’t refer to the gender of it’s intended audience.

Ladies Comics = A term for erotic comics targeting women. Basically a female version of Ero Manga
