MOOD PAINTING
I started the mood painting and finished it in three days
I had a few notes in the bottom of the page, I wrote the mood I was going for which was surreal, I put a few color swatches and label them for what I was gonna use for what what colors I should use and what should be darkened or brighter
For the background and camera I used all the cool tones to make it darker but mostly blue
For the skull I used warm yellow to pop-out and used a bit of burnt umber to make shadows
For the flowers and cloud thingys I used warm red and yellow
For the swirls behind the skeletons, I wanted it to pop out more from the back ground but more from the skeletons so I used mid tone blues and made different shades
I did forget to add the text from the camera but it would take to many layers of white to paint it on

GLAZING
for two weeks I had glazed the word painting
For the background I did three layers, two war yellow and one red at the last glaze I used a light brown to make marker shadows in the background
For the letters I did four or five glazes with both cool and warm tones but mostly warm and for the last two layers on the letters I mixed Burnt umber and ultramarine blue to make shadows

This is the finish product, I like how it came out and while it was easy to glaze it the fact that I didn’t have to worry about all the shadows confused me, I did enjoy adding the darker shadows since it pull everything together

BW COLLAGE
for the black and white collage, I wanted to go for a sureal look
My original plan was to have a half and half painting with the outside of the camera being a normal landscape and the image inside the camera being something weird and dream like but that was too hard so I stick to what’s inside the camera and keeping the rest blank
Some surreal artist would dull the backgrounds and make the weird objects pop out with bright colors so thats what I want to go for

COLOR SWATCHES
a homework we had was to color match some swatches
I had a hard time with the brighter colors since acrylic dries darker and if I added white the color wouldn’t be the same and turn pastel like
I added my worksheet were I would mark the color I made and see the difference between each mix, some were easier than others

REAL LIFE OBSERVATION
In class we worked on a live observation
There were a lot of of objects and I chose the squash and a cup that I thought was a bowl since it the handle was away from my view
The squash was easy since it was a lot of warm yellow and glaze on some browns
The cup was harder to do since I had to make a mid-tone blue and add a yellow glaze to mimic how the cloth reflects on the blue cup
I used some tip I learned on the word painting on this observation, like using my finger to blend things out

Colors
Colors have huge impact on thing they can determine mode and feeling, have your eyes look to or away from some things
Fast food chains would use red and yellow colors to attract hungry colors
How playground would use colorful poles to attract kids
Color is also used to demonstrate a personality with colors, a example is inside out how joy is yellow to represent happiness, sadness is blue, fear is purple, anger is red and fear is purple
How background pallet are darkened to represent a evil place and brighten to show a happy place

FINISHED PAINTINGS
I never uploaded the finished oil paintings
I personally like the opaque painting since I had more control of where I was painting than the transparent one.
I also finished the color wheel with the the cylinders and cubes. The wheel was hard to do since the acrylic were semi transparent and trying to make the mid tones look like mid tones rather then one having more of the cooler or warmer tone
I learned that each color has a warmer and cooler tone, I just thought that red orange and yellow are warm and green blue and purple are cool

Process on the word painting
For the past weeks I was working in the word painting
At first I had a hard time since I’m more used to doing the shadows then the light. Not just that but when I thought it looked light enough, turns out I need to make it a few shades lighter. I also had a hard time trying to spread the paint without it being too thick. But I had figured out how to do it, with a rag and my fingers. I’m still a bit sucky with it but it looks better than I expected. I also had multiple images of my references (I had a picture without Rachel’s lighting) so i had a hard time figuring out what shadows were there
At the studio I had my canves close to my reference ( for some reason I like having the table with the paints on my left) I also had my reference on the right on a round table and part of it in the big table
At home I didn’t have my reference so I used a chair to hold my canvas up and sat on the floor ( I don’t have any room at home to paint)

paper maquette
From the word combination I chose childish. It’s a word that I was called growing up
The look I was going for was a a child handwriting, so I wrote down childish with my left hand and used that as a reference to make the letters look funny. I also chose a bland background to mimic a tablecloth and did the letters in bright colors to contrast from the background. I also chose bright colors cause it’s something a kid would always go for. I also used the lighting from Rachel’s paper maquette to give more of a nostalgic feeling.
I’m proud of this since it looks nostalgic and something I would see in the tv.

combined words
In class, we got into groups and each wrote 10 words. We them mixed up all of our words to make some phrases up. I mostly did two word phrases like
Vivid colors
Childish journey
Strange stars
Creative kill
I wanted something more fun and childlike so I chose childish since it’s a pretty long word.

Mixing Chromatic Black
For this activity, Joselin and I mixed chromatic black using primary red, blue, and yellow. The first step was to create all of the primaries which was achieved by mixing the warm and cool versions of each color.
Then, we mixed the primary blue and yellow to create green and added red.

While working, we mixed some of the paint with white to get a better idea of the dominant undertones. In doing this, we realized that our black leaned strongly toward green so we decided to add more red to neutralize it.

After doing this, our chromatic black still looked more brown than black. To remedy this, we added more blue to deepen the color, allowing it to be perceived as black.

Eventually, Joselin and I were content with the color we mixed and added it to the canvas. However, in doing so, we realized that our chromatic black was not completely neutral but still leaned green. Despite this, I would consider us successful in this activity because our color read pretty strongly as black, especially in this photo.

Color
This activity was to see how colors interact and affect each other when they are placed side by side.
We randomly selected 12 Color Aid sheets. First we lined them up by tone. Darkest to lightest. We took a picture and desaturated it to see if we were right and some were very out of order. This shows when we were finishing up.

Second we divided the sheets by temperature: warm and cool. This was tricky since warm can apply to a color in general like yellow vs blue, but there are also warm and cool yellows and warm and cool blues.

Lastly, we lined them up to create a uniformly soft or hard line down the center. We chose a soft to mid contrast line and matched them based on that.

These were our efforts at the assignment. This was also fun to see the massive range if colors that there are and how they look different when next to each other.

cellophane activity
We did an activity where we experimented with layering colors. I did a piece that inspired me of 90’s retro art I started with a red background and layered blue on top to create a darker blue, and made a sun with a yellow and red, and to give off a glowing sun effect I would cut up circles bigger then the ones under them and layer it. But due to the red under the blue the yellow didn’t give a green effect. I cut another piece of paper with and used green and yellow to make some glass and cut up my shapes. I used red for the circle, yellow for the triangle( with blue layered under to create a shadowed effect), and blue for the square( red layered under to create a shadow too). I’m really proud of it, I kinda expected the colors to turn out that way especially for the shadows since some digital arts just complementary colors on a multiply effect to create shadows. The thing that did surprise me was that the yellow on top of the blue has a different color because of the red under it all, I didn’t notice till the professor pointed it out and I saw that effect. The more layers I added the darker a color would get, it’s like paint, the different amount you use of the color a different outcome you get.m so I would have to add a lot of blue to get it a certain shade and had to put the red in a certain place so it’s dark enough but not so visible that you can see the red. unfortunately I left it the wall cause I forgot to take it home and it’s gone :,(

Opaque vs Transparent tone using oil paint
I would say it was easier to work with opaque painting rather than the transparent. I wouldn’t have to worry about darkening an area too much cause now I can use to white. And I could blend it without medium. The oil paint is still too thick and I can’t cover large areas but it might be something I have to get used to.
I still had to finish the transparent painting

Transparent tone using oil paint
This is the first time I used oil paint for an actual painting and I would say it is quite difficult. For this painting we were doing, we are only using burnt umber. it’s quite difficult to spread the paint and I feel like the medium makes it too light, but I may be using the medium wrong. It also takes a while for it to dry to do another layer. So I have to work on other areas and have to be careful to not paint on the white parts since I can’t use white. But I feel like with the oil I could blend it nicely.

Wayne White
Wayne White is an artist who uses acrylic paint to create three dimensional, sculptural words on found landscape paintings. He is known for his humorous and thought provoking use of language. To create these paintings, White begins by going to thrift shops and buying discounted landscape paintings. White's process while painting words is spontaneous and he often does not have any specific meaning in mind while creating his pieces. However, over time, White remarks that he usually finds meaning in his paintings. A hallmark of White's word paintings is that he juxtaposes the softness of the landscape with his words which are crafted using strong line work and bold colors. White's word are reminiscent of buildings, contributing further to contrast between the natural and artificial.

- Longer to dry
- Doesn’t mix with water, it mixes with oil
- mixes with solvent
- Toxic

- Flat/ lush/ deep
- Glossy
- Takes six months to fully dry
- can be put over acrylic
Acrylic
- Fast drying
- Could wash it with water
- Matte
- It more modern more
- Polymer (plastic)
- More color variation
- Layer other material onto of acrylic
- can not put acrylic over oil
