In his day to day, Joseph had a very busy life. When he wasn’t busy in class or studying, he was at rugby practice which often times extended well past the scheduled time because he would always over do everything. He had high dreams so he was very hard on himself when it came to plays, form, etc. If he wasn’t at practice, he would be at the gym considering he’d developed quite an addiction to working out over the years.
Part of being because his father had always lived by such a dedicated work out regimen that it just wanted to emulate it. The other part being that he just liked to see the results of his work. When he wasn’t doing any of those things; he was working as a simple little coffee shop worker who made coffee and helped people pick between the cheese danish or the strawberry croissant. It was the more relaxing aspect of his day even thought it involved talking to people back to back to back. But that was never a hassle when you could talk for hours.
So that’s where he found himself that sunny afternoon and thankfully there weren’t that many people in the cafe so he truly didn’t need to do much. He hadn’t had a customer in roughly 30 minutes so he had taken the time to clean a few things before he got distracted by his phone. You would think that a boy like him would have it pretty easy with woman but considering most women just wanted to have sex and not actually go on a date, Joseph found himself on dating apps more and more because he just wanted to see what the options were.
It had been almost 2 years since him and Roxy broke up so maybe it was just time for him to try his hand. His shot on the vampire girl seemed to have not worked so now he was second guessing his charm. As he scrolled through an answered quick messages, he suddenly heard a voice behind him which he recalled from but a few days earlier. A weird feeling went through him at the memory of the girl but as he slipped his phone in his apron pocket, he turned around.
And there she was. Just as beautiful as she had been a few days ago and as his eyes settled on her, he felt this very strange feeling course through his entire being. The world stood at a standstill and he didn’t even see the world around him. It was almost like a tunnel had formed around him and all that he saw was her. He slowly came back to reality and internally panic settled into his brain because he knew exactly what had just happened. And imprinting on a stranger was an incredibly dangerous thing to do.
But he also didn’t want to make the situation weird so he only did what he knew how to do; he smiled and moved towards the counter and tapped at the machine screen to wake it up. “I guess it’s just fate that we keep running into each other when we’re both just working, huh?” He mused before he allowed himself to lean his hip into the counter, arms crossing over as the muscles of his biceps became more prominent.
“But considering I’m working, allow me to ask the obligatory what can I get you on this beautiful day? We have a few specials today which are on the front of the counter but then we have the classics behind me. You also have the option of a surprise drink made by yours truly. Quite literally.” He pointed his finger towards a part of the menu that literally was drink for $5 labeled ‘A Surprise Joey’. “Before you ask, I didn’t pick the name. My boss did. It’s kind of a play on a kangaroo Joey. Tourists find it funny so…” he shrugged.

When he was 18 and had made the decision that he was going to go to college in Australia and not Canada, Joseph had felt at one point that it wasn’t the best decision. Thousands of miles away from his family in a whole new country where his ancestors had once walked but not one he’d truly known. His parents had always made sure he and his younger siblings went there as often as possible as they were growing up but something about it felt foreign still. Add on the initial loneliness and quiet of not hearing a 12 and 13 year old argue all day every day and it had been an adjustment.
But nearly 4 years later, Joseph had adjusted to life in Australia and he was very much a local to everything that happened around him. It was still difficult in order of missing his family but thankfully his aunt Maia had made his life very easy a year into his life in Australia by setting up a portal in his apartment so he could just pop through right back to his home whenever he felt homesick. There were some perks to having the all ruling leader of the fae folk as your aunt and he was more than happy to use them whenever he found it possible. However, one thing his auntie really couldn’t do for him was provide him with somewhere in the open where he would be able to spend his full moons in peace.
Unfortunately, Australia lacked the forests that Joseph was so used to running through growing up in Canada which made it hard for a wolf to blend into the world around him. Especially when they weren’t even close to being native in the country as a whole. This had often resulted in Joey spending the full moons in his apartment, tucked on his couch under a big blanket just sleeping the hours away as he waited for it to be the next day so he could go about his life. A stark contrast to 2 younger werewolves jumping on you the whole night while your father tried to get them to stop. He truly didn’t realize just how much he had taken those nights for granted until he was an adult and was now forced to spend them alone. He could take the portal home but there was also the element that he wanted to be independent from his parents. Be his own person and make his way in the world without them holding his hand.
Thankfully, something that it did have was botanical gardens. They had been Joseph’s saving grace when he had first come to Melbourne and they had now become something of a routine for the young man to visit. Every evening of a full moon, he would grab a backpack with a change of clothes and random essentials before heading out to the gardens before their closing time of 7:30pm. Today was no different except that he had gone a bit earlier than his usual time since he actually wanted to look around for a bit. He was always a lover of the outdoors and when you grow up going on hikes with your dad, you yearn for the wilderness more than most would.
He had hidden in his usual spot so that nobody would notice he was there and as it was out in the open, it wasn’t like he wouldn’t be able to avoid any cameras. Come the night, it was calm and he had tucked his backpack into a safe location for him to come back to. It was always the same spot for that as well. His clothes had come off and been stored under his bag and he had shifted into his fluffy, wolf self. He felt content in his wolf form as he allowed himself to stretch out where he stood, his wolf body twisting and turning in weighs not so foreign to him but not as common as it once was.
However, as he was walking around freely as a wolf, the young man started to feel a weird pressure hanging in the air above him. It was something that made him begin to feel incredibly uneasy as he allowed himself to come to a halt in the middle of the gardens. He hadn’t quite ever experienced something like this. Something that was almost giving off an oppressive aura which just didn’t feel right. His ears pricked up at the sound of movement near by which made him move in a slow circle. Something or somebody was around him and it felt like it was watching him. Closely.
So, the only thing he knew to do in these situations was run. It was what his dad had taught him and his younger siblings for years and despite his age, that was going to be what he did. The second he started running was the second he heard the sound of footsteps bolting directly after him. He was fast given his athleticism but these people were faster and before he knew it, he found himself in a corner and the second he turned around there was 3 other people with red eyes standing not that far away. He knew those eyes well growing up in a world where vampires were his classmates and people he cared for. One of his best friends to this day was one and he was the best person Joey knew. These one? These felt different. Vicious. And he didn’t know what to do.

Ada. A short and simply name for a girl who seemed to be everything but. But all he could do was smile as he gave her a solid handshake as his eyes lingered on her for a moment, noticing the way her eyes seemed to wander but all it did was make him quirk his brow ever so slightly. “It’s lovely to meet you, Ada.” He didn’t quite have much to add on but that didn’t mean that he didn’t have a million and one thoughts running through his mind. He’d have to sit and think about all this in his apartment and talk to Moon about this. Not that his dog ever knew what he was talking about but she sure did make for a good listener as long as she was fed. His hand fell back to his side as he thought about the concept of being an only child. “I was an only child for 5 years and I don’t remember much of it but my parents say I loved every second of it. The second Tate was born I was just kinda like what the fuck am I supposed to do with this thing. And then Yasmine came along not long after and I was really lost. But hey! If you ever need someone to play tea party with, I’m kind of a pro after years of being forced to drink from tiny tea cups so you don’t need to do it all alone anymore. Except instead of tea maybe we can aim for wine or something.” He could either be taken seriously or this could be taken as a joke that he had simply chosen to run with. Either way he wouldn’t be upset with the outcome.
Choosing to simply ignore the comment on the raunchy books, he chose to focus on where she was from instead. He has never heard of the place but he definitely made a mental note to ask his mom at a later point since she had spent a lot of her time in England at different museums when he was but a toddler when getting her masters so she has to be the pro here. “I can’t say I’ve heard of it but I’ve been to London a few times with my family either on vacation or because my mum had business to tend to so I know something at least!“ It made him sound a bit uncultured but that was truly not the case. Joseph has grown up seeing corners of the world most would never even think of seeing due to his mother’s love of history and both his parents intellectual pursuits. But often times this overlooked smaller places. “Me?” He asked, raising his brow slightly before he laughed. “Oh I’m from Canada. Vancouver to be exact. A very long way away from here really but a great place if you ever get the chance to go. Just a bit cold. Or a lot cold.”
His head cocked to one side at her serious tone and question but the confusion of it all only lasted a little bit before he shook his head. “If I wanted to impress you with the size of anything it wouldn’t be my watch when I have two arms that would do that just fine. I was only saying that cause I noticed your jewelry and my mom has that same bracelet so I know you have expensive taste. But hey! If the watch doesn’t do it for you then I truly am at a loss,” he said, one of his hands raised slightly almost in defeat for a touch more flair. He watched her walk away and he may or may not have lingered slightly behind as his eyes ran down her back settling on her behind for a bit. Biting his lip, the young man snapped back to reality and it didn’t take long for him to catch up to her right as she pulled out another book. But just like that it seemed like she was done helping him which made him frown slightly at the question. Unnoticeable really as he went back to his soft smile quite quickly but he supposed she had work to get back to then talk to him. “Uhm… no this should be fine. I don’t really want to take up any more of your time if you’re busy or anything. I could always go ask the other girl you talked to earlier if she has any suggestions so you can get back to what you were doing. I appreciate you though! This really helps a lot!”

“What’s not to value?” He retorted as he tried to keep his mind more focused on the task at hand which was his baby sister’s birthday present but that wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to do when faced with a beautiful woman. “I mean that with the utmost respect ‘cause my mum would kill me if I was anything outside of respectful in front of a beautiful woman. I don’t want it to sound like I’m some kind of creep or something. Which… in retrospect does kinda make me look like a creep when you don’t even know my name.” He held out his hand for her as he tilted his head back slightly, beaming like a golden retriever after he was told he did something right. “I’m Joseph. Or Joey. Whichever you’d prefer to use.” Maybe it wasn’t the smoothest he’d ever been but he didn’t exactly prioritize that in this moment since now he felt like he had to backtrack.
He remained quiet as he watched her talk to her co-worker and he simply didn’t really bother to take into consideration what was happening either. He knew that vampires had their quirks like everyone in this crazy world but did he know what? No. Did he ever think of asking Mack? Never. Whatever Malcolm did had always gone over Joey’s head but it wasn’t like Malcolm ever really talked about these things either. So, all those thoughts aside, he simply watched the way that she moved around the counter and he couldn’t help but allow his eyes to migrate downwards even though his eyes quickly shot back up since there was a small window where it was ok in his brain before he started to feel gross. He was a respectful boy at his core and he was never going to ever stray from that. Following alongside her, he kept the present smile on his face. “I try my best to be. I have two younger siblings – a boy & a girl – and they’re Irish twins so they’ve always kept me busy since the gap is 5-6 years. I love ‘em though!”
The idea of his sweet innocent baby sister reading raunchy sex books made Joseph’s face fall completely flat as he tried to hide the horrified look on his face. “Oh my god don’t say that. Oh my god! She’s so little and innocent no… she wouldn’t read those. I…” he trailed off, simply shaking his head and trying to block that out of his mind. Instead, he watched the way she navigated the aisles and simply spoke about books with a passion that Joey quite enjoyed. It was warm and hard to come by in a world where everyone always seemed to be focused on 4 things at once which didn’t lead to much passion. And it was adding to the layer of allure and attraction he already had in his brain. He simply took the books from her whenever she would hold them out and look at the covers before following quietly. “Where in England are you from?” He questioned as he heard the words ‘home country’ and put the accent and books together like a little puzzle.
He noticed the way she got significantly quieter after she was done which made him wonder why that is. “I don’t have a budget for most things,” he said with a laugh as he pointed to the very expensive watch on his wrist, “I just want to make sure she has the best birthday she can. You only turn 16 once so I’d buy her the whole store if I had to. Not that my parents would be okay with that but still. Do you have any personal favorites outside of classics? Is there good fantasy ones? Maybe ones which are more about inclusivity while being fiction? My sister now and again struggles to fit in so maybe reading that kind of thing would help.”

He waited for the girl to turn around and quite frankly he didn’t know what he had been expecting but it was more definitely not the same girl he had seen a few days before. It was strange. In this setting she looked just as beautiful as she had when he’d seen her last but something about her felt a little more… relaxed. Approachable. It was a stark difference to when he had first seen her face when she had been more brash and menacing. But that was a bit of a wasted thought on Joseph the more he looked at the woman and allowed his brain to stop analyzing everything and simply exist in that space and time. And the only thought coming through then was that the prior time he had seen her had definitely not been some fluke and she most definitely was a striking woman. Breaking from his thoughts, he did the best that he could and chose to not judge someone for their actions as all actions have reasons. And he didn’t know hers so he chose to let it go. He tilted his head slightly as he smiled, pearly whites gleaming as he shrugged his shoulders almost innocently. “I said I don’t read much but I can most definitely start if you happen to have any suggestions. I’ll even come back and give you my run down and ratings. No ulterior motives either, cross my heart,” he joked, marking an ‘x’ over where his heart was. One thing Joey had and exuded at his pores was charisma. It simply came out without even trying and with the charisma came a whole lot of yapping.
But at the ending thought, he couldn’t help but look a bit lost as he looked around at all the shelves around them. “So, here’s the thing! Let me put my friend here down so you can take me a bit more seriously,” he said, holding up the plush and setting it on the counter as he put one of his hands in his pockets. Holding up a hand he added, “Don’t worry, I’m buying it. And before you ask, no it’s not for me. It’s for my baby sister. The whole reason I’m even here is because of her.” He paused, fixing his hat slightly as he focused his eyes on her fully. “My baby sister is turning 16. She’s never really been an all eyes on me kind of girl so she didn’t want a Sweet 16 - she asked for a trip instead with her friends. But we’re still having a party for her and I wanted to get her some gifts and she loves books, yeah? She has this massive collection and I’m not allowed to touch them for some reason but some are even cool with sprayed pages. The problem is… I don’t know what kind she likes. I don’t really want to know what’s popular among teenage girls ‘cause there’s lines as an older brother I’m not gonna cross but I want her to like her gifts. Which is where you come in, Madam Knowledgeable. Help?”

Nothing? All of this and she was going to simply tell them that they weren't going to do anything? Well, this just seemed like a big waste of time then, didn't it? The confusion began to settle into the creature as the growls slowly came to a stop and he found himself sitting there in a bit of a state. Not even realizing how he had somehow managed to do exactly as she had said from the weird situation unfolding before him. He simply watched the way the woman spoke to the others and suddenly it made sense. She was their bosses daughter. Ah! Of course! He watched them simply disappear after what she said and Joseph was left staring at the beautiful woman once again. He still continued to wondering why she had chosen this approach but who was he to complain? Don't ever let me see you again. The words hung in the air as he simply watched her disappear, head tilted at the weird events of the night. Letting out a sigh, the young wolf rose to his fours once again and shook himself out. The only thought in his mind being but what if you did see me again?
A FEW DAYS LATER
It had been a few days since the full moon incident where he had come face to face with some vampires and Joseph really couldn't stop himself from thinking about the woman he had seen. Something about the way she carried herself and seemed to command the space had an allure that he couldn't make sense of. Nor did he want to considering she was just a passerby he would never meet again but sometimes it was fun to entertain a little bit of delusional and try to process what would even happen if that was the case. He wasn't furry and on all fours this time so who even knows. But he had more pressing matters at hand.
His baby sister was turning 16 and he was trying to find her the perfect gift which didn't involve just buying her her favorite snacks and some bows for her hair. He adored Yasmine and was beyond grateful to have such a sweet girl as his younger sister despite all of her bumps in the road. She was someone who taught him something new every day about resilience and perseverance and to be able to do that at only 16 was insane. He knew life wasn't too easy for her at time so it was his duty to make sure she at least was spoiled now and again. Not that their parents didn't do that already but big brother spoiling was different. He'd done the same for Tate when he'd turned 17 so it had to be shared treatment.
But now the young man found himself in the middle of a rather large yet quaint bookstore completely lost and unsure of where to even look. The book store had some cute plushies so he'd picked one up but every corner he turned, he seemed to get more lost among the skinny rows. On top of that, he stuck out like a sore thumb at 6'5" in stature and a large muscular frame perfectly hidden under a large tee shirt. He wore a backwards All-Blacks hat which covered his dark brown hair and some cargos. A basic boy at his core that didn't require anything else. So, instead of wandering around like an idiot and getting looks from strangers for doing so, he chose to find the girl working at the counter to get some help.
She had her back to him as he approach, hands holding the plushie he'd picked up for Yasmine as he cleared his throat. "Excuse me? Hey! I was wondering if you could maybe help me? I don't really read much but am trying to find some good books to give as a gift so I'm kinda lost. And you work here so you're obviously the expert, right?" He questioned, laughing as he waited a response.

It was strange. Growing up in a world like he had, Joseph had never really experienced much prejudice as he has grown up being told to always welcome those who were different from him with an open mind. He had made friends of all sorts over the years and date those different to him as well. Hostilities often times did arise but it was never like what he had been told by his father and uncle had occurred. The lore ran deep and while he didn’t know the full extent, he had kind of lived with blinders in the world thinking that everything was the same as it was back home. Inclusive and tranquil.
In the presence of those before him, he had quickly come to realize that maybe living life with rose colored glasses on was something that might end up getting him killed one day if he wasn’t more careful. But he also wasn’t entirely sure how to handle this given it simply had never happened to him before. As a human he was a big guy with plenty of muscle to him but as a wolf stuck on all fours, the most he’d be able to do is bite but not run as vampires ran faster.
He remained where he was, eyes narrowed as he tried to formulate some kind of path for him that would take him away from this nonsense when he heard the voice of a woman. Internally; he tensed up a bit at another one showing up but externally his head tilted to on side for a moment as she made her reveal. She was beautiful to say the least with a look to her that Joey couldn’t quite pinpoint but made her seem like she was straight out of one of his baby sisters magazines.
She seemed to be the leader of this brood which made things worse as well but how? She looked his own age. Or was she just stuck at that age and was she actually 400 years old? That was rude, he told himself as he watched the way she crouched down. The light hit the angles of her face just right which made her look radiant but also terrifying at the same time. Up until he heard a word that he actively had been raised to avoid. A low rumbling growl came out of the werewolf as he eyed the woman before him upon hearing the slur.
It was a real shame someone so gorgeous just had to also be someone so incredibly racist. A wasted face, he thought to himself. Well, that was mean of him to say since it most definitely was not a wasted but he was a bit stressed so it wasn’t like his thoughts were in the right row. Hunching his back slightly, he allowed himself to bare his teeth in intimidation as he growled, getting louder as he eyed them all slowly. His legs moving slightly as well as he took steps forward. Why be afraid when that’s what they would want, no?
