Airbnb - North Lagoon Venice
My last night in Italy was spent at an Airbnb with two other girls in the program. Our host (second woman from the left) only spoke Italian and this really helped me practice some of the Italian I had picked up. She cooked us an Italian dinner and prepared traditional Italian breakfast in the morning. During our stay, she also shared some of her stories of growing up and living in Italy.
My last night in Italy with our hosts was the night I truly immersed myself in the Italian culture. This was due to her speaking in Italian to us which forced us to try to understand and speak it. I did not receive the language practice at the places I visited on the weekends because all the tourist places in Italy have Americanized and have English speakers now. The meals our host served us were homemade Italian food, something I was not able to experience for previous meals. My meals were mainly at the cafeteria or at restaurants which can be unoriginal in bigger cities to appeal to tourists.
I believe that over the years, Italy may have lost or sacrificed some aspects of their culture in bigger cities to attract tourists. I also believe that to receive the real culture of a foreign country one must stay with a host family or in a smaller area of a city- such as I did for my last day. While I did learn a lot about Italy during my previous days on the trip, I was able to engage myself the most into the Italian culture on my last day.

Italian Gourmet Dinner
To end off the four weeks abroad, CIMBA hosted an Italian gourmet dinner during the last week. These are the pictures of the 8 UNL students representing UNL at CIMBA for the summer term of 2019.
In preparation for this dinner, CIMBA had a school official teach us about manners at the dinner table- specifically Italian manners. The manners I learned from the lesson will be very useful in my future professional career. Whether it is having a lunch interview, a business meeting at a restaurant or a different scenario, it is always beneficial to have the background knowledge of a manners class to leave a good impression.
Our Italian gourmet dinner was a five course meal. Check out the menu for the evening!

Mount Grappa - Veneto
Mount Grappa is about an hour drive away from campus. I got to visit this place on another afternoon trip. Some events of World War I and World War II took place here. The bottom picture shows the Sacrario Militare; over 12,000 soldiers were buried here.

Dinner in Italy
Overall, Italians eat dinner pretty late. Dinner time starts between 7pm and 7:30pm. Majority of restaurants at places such as Cinque Terre, Paderno del Grappa, and Venice open for dinner at seven. On the other hand, dinner in Florence starts at 8pm which makes it for a longer time difference compared to dinner time in the U.S. This was a cultural difference that was hard to adjust to at first because I normally eat dinner between 5 and 6.

Piazzale Michelangelo
To get to the Piazzale of Michelangelo we had to cross the river and go up sloping and deep steps. This site is away from all the tourist attractions of Florence. I watched the sunset and loved the Florence skyline from this point! Towards the end of the video you can hear other tourists chearing as the sun sets.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore - Italy
In comparison to a city crammed with art, the cathedral was very empty. You can see the cathedral is very decorative on the outside with many details and multicolored marble. I waited in line to get into this cathedral with high expectations of more art; however, there is not a lot of art on display on the inside.

Galleria dell’Accademia - Florence
This painting is one of the few that Michelangelo created. During my tour of the Galleria dell’Accademia I learned that he preferred sculpting over painting.
