Audience Feedback
Q1. What qualities of this trailer would make you want to watch the film?
After receiving feedback from this question, the general consensus was that the story itself gripped the attention of the audience, making them more likely to watch the film. There were some specifics that stood out to me, with one person saying, “the shots of the game were very enticing.” This was something that we wanted to include, emphasising the talent of Hunter, and to show what people can expect. People also found that the editing pace, and the soundtrack fitted the story well, helping the viewing experience. The other quote that stood out to me was “the trailer captivated me to see if the young football star overcame the barriers of injury to succeed.” This helps emphasise how the story is the main quality that will make people want to watch the film.
Q2. What qualities of this magazine cover would make you want to watch the trailer?
The first comment that struck my attention in reply to this question was “that there would be on set interviews”. This instantly shows that people want to have the incentive of unseen material to want to read the trailer, and then watch the trailer. People also like the fact that the tagline has some mystery to it, with watching the trailer giving answers to what it means, one person said, “watching the trailer could help give light to the tagline”. This shows how the tagline will make people want to watch the trailer to find out more about the film.
Q3. What qualities of this poster would make you want to watch the trailer?
The general reponse of the target audience was that the poster makes people want to see the trailer. The qualities that seemes consistent in pushing people towards watching the trailer were the slogan and the image. One person said “the sogan is short and to the point, making the viewer want to see if the determination of the young star prevails.” This emphasises the impact of the slogan, giving a siple peak at the story, but making people want to watch the trailer to find out more. Another person said the “main character is centre and it’s clear what the theme of the film is about.” The image was clearly something that grabbed the attention of this person, making them aware of the type of film, without watching the trailer, but still wanting to watch it to find out more.
Q4. How does this trailer fit the conventions of a typical trailer?
People generally found that the story that was identified in the trailer was one that was similar to a typical film trailer, showing many shots of the film, providing the bulk of the story. One member of my target audience made a list of the features that help the trailer fit with others “voice over, music, montage of shots, focus on main character”. However, we made sure that the whole story was not given away in the trailer. This was evident in one person’s response that it “shows main points of story but not all of it”, mixed with another response, emphasising the effect of the cliffhangers , highly emphasises how this trailer fits the conventions of a typical trailer.
Q5. How does this magazine cover fit the conventions of a typical magazine cover?
After reading the feedback that we received, it is clear that the bold picture, clearly relating to the film itself, is one convention that we followed. “The large picture on the centre of the cover to entice the audience” was one response that grabbed my attention as it emphasises hpw our magazine cover fits in to others. The other convention that people saw our cover followed, was the use of exclusive features to grab the readers’ attention. One member of our target audience pointed this out, “added extras making the viewer want to read more”. The magazine cover therefore follows the conventions of a typical cover, with the exclusive interviews working to effect.
Q6. How does this poster fit the conventions of a typical film poster?
I noticed when looking through the feedback, that people felt the slogan, with the realese date, are things you would typically see in a film poster. “It has a slogan, and gives me the film title with release date”, “the title and image, giving a hint to what the film is about, also with the date of release, and an enlarged slogan”. These two quotes emphasise how our poster fits in to he norm, with the picture, slogan, title, and release date all giving the target audience what they would normally see on a poster.

My magazine cover, made for our A2 media film trailer.

After completing our first draft of the project, we collected some audience feedback.
Upon looking at this, we have seen that the there are a few things we need to change to make the piece more effective and professional. The first is the pace of the editing, which had been too slow in places of the trailer. The second was narration, that would help flow the story through easier for our audience. The changeover of music, in places, was quite sudden, which makes watching it uneasy.
With the feedback we received, we are looking to make some alterations to our project, making it more effective. We have collected some narration to put over the top, and will speed up the editing pace, especially in the montage part of the project. Our music transitions will also be altered, to help the flow of the piece.
With these alterations to the projects, it will become much easier to watch, and be more effective as a trailer.

This is the first draft of our project that we have made. We will get some audience feedback to improve our piece, but this is a good place to start.

Analysis of an example magazine cover
Tumblr media
In preparation of creating my ancillary task, I wanted to look at an example magazine cover from ‘Empire’. This has given me a very good insight to what I want to do for my magazine cover.

Script
Narrator: Meet 16-year-old Gareth Hunter, top goal scorer every season since he was 6, he doesn’t shy away from the limelight.
Close-up of Hunter. Penalty awarded, he pushes others out of the way, claims the penalty and prepares to take it.
Keeper: Nervous?
Hunter: (Cocky) Never!
Gareth takes the penalty, and chips the goalkeeper
Narrator: This boy is never short of confidence!
Cuts to later in the game with an aggressive battle with the defender.
Centre back: You’re not getting past me today hunter.
Hunter: (Cocky) We will see about that.
The defender makes a terrible tackle and injures Hunter. Leaving him screaming in pain.
Centre back: (Whispering in Gareth’s ear) Told you, you’re not getting past me today mate.
Hunter: (Angry) I’m not your mate!
Centre back: (Laughing) Enjoy the rest of the season.
Cuts to Hunter sitting at home resting with ice packs on his knee. Looking sad and depressed without playing. He is watching videos of him scoring goals, wanting to play again. His mum shouts through the door.
Hunters mum: Dinners ready!
Hunter: I’m not hungry mum!
He continues to sit in his room watching clips, when the phone rings.
Manager: Gareth, how’s the knee?
Hunter: It’s been better gaff.
Manager: Well you better get it sorted by march 12th, because we’ve got a guy coming down that wants to see what you’ve got.
Hunter: (Excited) I’ll be ready!
Manager: This is a huge opportunity Gareth, don’t waste it!
Narrator: Now the hard work begins.
A montage of clips of Hunter regaining fitness, first with light gym session, to running to heavier sessions. He is working so hard that he vomits, but it doesn’t stop him.
He looks very close to fitness, finishing a long run.
Hunter: That’s the one!
Gareth gets another phone call from his manager.
Manager: You need some minutes before the big day, I’m gonna have you in my squad this week, don’t expect to start though.
Hunter: (Unhappy)But I know I’m ready gaff!
Manager: (Assertive) I’ll make the decision Gareth! Just make sure you’re ready.
Cuts to the two in the dressing room before the game.
Manager: Gaz, you’re gonna start this one on the bench.
Hunter: (Disappointed) But gaff-
Manager: (Interrupting Hunter) No Gaz! I don’t want to hear it! You can’t aggravate the knee. You’ll get your chance, give it time.
Cuts to near the end of the game, the manager stands in the side-lines.
Manager: Come on boys, 10 minutes left we need this goal!
Looks to Gareth
Come on boy now’s your time
Hunter comes on and has an easy chance late on. He misses and a close-up shows hit distraught reaction.
Cuts to the next game, the scout is introduced to the manager, hoping to see the best from Hunter. The manager prepares Hunter.
Manager: Today’s the day, how you feeling?
Hunter: This is my chance, I got this!
Manager: No funny business this time. If you get chance, burry it, show him what you can do!
Cuts to the end of the game, the ball sits up to Hunter, ready to volley it. Slow-motion and exaggerated heart beat and breathing. As he hits the ball, the screen goes black and the ending credits come up.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although Pirates of the Caribbean is not similar to our product, I analysed it as it is very different to the typical trailer, with a lot of focus on one part of the story. This was really beneficial to see another type of trailer. We are going to take this as an insight, and with our audience feedback, we can see that people would prefer a normal trailer.
