Belfast Building- Modelling
I was given the canteen area’s tables and chairs to model alongside the bathroom area. I took to youtube for tutorials that could help me to build these things! Here are the tutorials that I used for the table- the second link is how to make a fork but it didn't work out too well when it was smoothed so I didn't use it, I made the plate using a trick that Conann taught us in class:
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2mz4aBhYlA
This is how the forks and knives looked:

They just look so over it.

I used this for the golden tile effect:

Belfast Building- Concepts
I based my drawing off the Chinese hotel pods, they were a main inspiration for our building. We wanted to do double and single pods that would be suffice for single people and women and children.

Jackson, J. (2013). China’s capsule hotel: A room with no view. [online] The Darkroom: Exploring visual journalism from the Baltimore Sun. Available at: http://darkroom.baltimoresun.com/2013/08/chinas-capsule-hotel-a-room-with-no-view/#1 [Accessed 20 Mar. 2015]. Here is my interpretation. I feel like I definitely need to keep practising using the graphics tablet but I enjoyed trying to emulate the light and how it was hitting the shiny surfaces.

Belfast Building- Data Visualisation
I took some of the information we had found and using the graphs I had previously looked at as reference. This is a Pie chart showing the health statistics of the residents of Belfast. We thought that if we knew about the illnesses if we had time we could try to accommodate for them. However our building is designed to be reasonably handy for those in wheelchairs or with other mobility problems and we also included a hospital area in each block!
Below is a chart showing the Religious status of the residents of Belfast, we wanted to learn and get to grips with the people we were working with! We also had the idea of trying to accommodate for them all, however there were so many religions that we decided against it. We thought that if people were being evacuated they would bring their own Bibles to worship.
Here is another bar chart that I made to show the background of the residents of Belfast- this was just one to show that we had researched everything that we possibly could, it didn’t really play a part in the overall design of the building.

Belfast Building - Research
For the Belfast building I was grouped with Abigail, Natalie and Shannon and right away we got into research! I quite liked the idea of a whimsical approach, immediately thinking of the Axiom from Wall.E which carries all the people of earth.

Pixar Wiki, (2015). Axiom. [online] Available at: http://pixar.wikia.com/Axiom [Accessed 20 Mar. 2015].
The rest of the group however preferred a more serious route and therefore we began researching numbers! Abigail’s boyfriend had thought of a spiralled idea, with a number of places to live branching off from the staircase so our research became more focused as we had to figure out how much would live in each staircase! Here are some of the links that I used to gather information about Belfast, about numbers and other statistics E.G Health and education figures:

The highlighted links were most useful to me, in particular the graphs in the second link, I used them to base my own graphs on!

The Silence of the Lambs- Presentation and Feedback
We finished the presentation the day before the day it was due, so we had a lot of time to practice! I feel like having my team with me as I was presenting calmed me a lot, I was able to give a lot more information without making mistakes! The feedback:
-It was good that we applied the theory to the presentation -Images need citation -The job was a presentation, we need to plan the presentation then add the other elements -We showed the Godfather totem which was a good reference but didn't follow it
Philcampbelldesign.com, (2015). Phil Campbell Design - The Blog. [online] Available at: http://www.philcampbelldesign.com/index.php/blog/C5/ [Accessed 22 Feb. 2015].
-Needed to actually look up the term Schematic Diagram (A schematic, or schematic diagram, is a representation of the elements of a system using abstract, graphic symbols rather than realistic pictures. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the information the schematic is intended to convey, and may add unrealistic elements that aid comprehension.- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schematic )
-The diagrams were too separated and needed interconnection
-We were safe
-We should rehearse half an hour per minute of presenting

The Silence of the Lambs- Artefact
With the artefact we wanted to include as much animation and film aspects as we could, in an attempt to challenge ourselves! We took to the whiteboard to come up with as many ideas as possible!
We liked the idea of an eerie montage, almost like an American Horror Story opening title sequence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omu0lDUcMP4). There were some things from the movie that we wanted to incorporate, like the flashback Clarice has of the lambs. We also liked the imagery on the front of the box with the moths, Abigail in particular was interested in the moths! Aisling was really interested in the music box and Hannibal's repetitive hand movements as he listened to it- as if he was orchestrating our whole short film.
Courtney was a big fan of the serial killer that Buffalo Bill was based off, Ed Gein. So we all looked at a documentary about him and did some research. We wanted to intertwine the documentary footage with the film we create! Here's some gruesome stuff I found about Gein :(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein)
Searching Gein's house the authorities found-
Whole human bones and fragments
Wastebasket made of human SKIN
Human SKIN covering several chair seats
Skulls on his bedposts
Female skulls, some with the tops sawn off
Bowls made from human skulls
A corset made from a female torso skinned from shoulders to waist
Leggings made from human leg SKIN
Masks made from the skin from female heads
Mary Hogan's face mask in a PAPER BAG
Mary Hogan's skull in a box
Bernice Worden's entire head in a burlap sack
Bernice Worden's heart "in a plastic bag in front of Gein's potbellied stove"
Nine vulvae in a shoe box
A young girl's dress and "the vulvas of two females judged to have been about fifteen years old"
A belt made from female human nipples
Four noses
A pair of lips on a window shade drawstring[
A lampshade made from the skin of a human face
Fingernails from female fingers
Gross, right?
We then created a storyboard so we knew how the pieces were going to fit together in the film.
We again handed out roles, Abigail was going to work on moths emerging from Clarice's and Hannibal's mouth. Aisling would take the parts to do with the classical music and Courtney and I would create the silhouetted puppets. I decided to take to google to take inspiration for the Buffalo Bill silhouette puppet.
Niedopowiedzenia.blog.pl, (2013). The Tale of the Three Brothers | Niedopowiedzenia. [online] Available at: http://niedopowiedzenia.blog.pl/the-tale-of-the-three-brothers/ [Accessed 22 Feb. 2015].
The tale of the three brothers was incredibly atmospheric, it had an aged look that I thought it would be nice to try and recreate! Also, the movements were incredibly dramatic to emphasise what was going on through the silhouette which was what I wanted to create in my silhouette character!
Greenlit Gaming, (2013). The Cat Lady Preview | Greenlit Gaming. [online] Available at: http://greenlitgaming.com/the-cat-lady-preview/ [Accessed 22 Feb. 2015].
The cat lady is a game that Courtney brought to my attention! As we were working together we were sharing inspirations as we went along to make sure we were on the same track! We used this as a reference as we wanted our characters to be moving through the grass. It was really helpful. We also looked at some other Expressionistic things like the Cabinet of Dr Caligari by Robert Weine and Nosferatu. To help us with the Chiaroscuro lighting and intense use of shadows. I then drew Buffalo Bill running and this is what I came up with.
I also did the buffalo running and it turned out like this:
I thought they turned out well.. The drawings are possibly too rough and I need to work on my arcs a little bit more though but for a first attempt at 2D animation, I think it went quite well!! I also used after effects to create the transitional scene from Buffalo Bill as a human to him as a Buffalo animal using clips from the film and the moth design that Abigail created:
youtube
The final short film was edited by Aisling, I think it was really effective, however my team decided against including my Bill running scene which made me feel a bit shit but it still looked good so I didn't really mind at the end of the day! The music was incredibly unsettling and that alongside the imagery we had decided to piece together made it a really unnerving and gruesome piece, I love it!

The Silence of the Lambs- Schematic Diagram
We decided to hand out the characters and each make separate diagrams for the one character. I was given Clarice Starling, the protagonist. Abigail- Hannibal, Courtney- Buffalo Bill and Aisling was given the Other Characters like Chilton, Crawford and The Senator's daughter. With Clarice there wasn't much off-screen narrative that I would have to put in place, being the main character she was on screen in nearly every scene. When she wasn't on screen she was travelling. Anyway, I first went through the film, taking notes on the key events that happened in each chapter so I could make a diagram based on her narrative.

With regards to the Writer's journey I could see that Clarice was easily the underdog hero of the story, however this not her hero's journey! It is only the beginning of it, her hero's journey begins when she gets her FBI badge at the end of the film! There is also a key moment in the film where she plays the trickster, telling hannibal she has a deal with him! Which is totally made up in a ploy to get information out of him! Researching about her I came up with some points:
-From a poverty stricken town
-Orphanage after her father dies -Can discard the parts of the past that make her weak
-Sensitive
-Indifferent to men, blocks any form of intimacy
-Willing to give up a lot to be an FBI agent
-There is vulnerability- Lecter figures this out.
-Still experiences childhood traumas
From this I had a good insight into the character of Clarice, I could then start drawing her diagram:

We also regrouped and created a timeline for the character of Miggs or 'Multiple Miggs'. We watched a video of a woman who had Multiple Personality Disorder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TlYGivBGYE), also creating a back story for miggs! I thought of the idea of making his name an anagram for the diferent personalities inside him! Michael, Isaac, George, Gemma and Samuel. Each having a completely different personality. Then Abigail went and created the diagram for this.

The Silence of the Lambs- Part two
Whilst watching the film I took notes on each individual character, these were backed up with notes from other people's findings online.

As you can see I got particularly caught up in the iconic Fava Beans scene. Here are some of the interesting sites I used:
http://dramatica.com/analysis/the-silence-of-the-lambs (This was quite helpful, it related a bit to the narrative of the hero's journey)
http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-silence-of-the-lambs/#gsc.tab=0
https://prezi.com/dmjm4_6jupfa/clarice-her-character-development-through-silence-of-the-lambs-to-hannibal/
http://www.studymode.com/subjects/silence-of-the-lambs-character-analysis-page1.html
https://deous.wordpress.com/%E2%80%9Csilence-of-the-lambs%E2%80%9D-script-and-character-analysiscopy-the-pros/
http://www.themovietimeline.com/film1160 (This came in handy when it came to writing the timelines)
One key thing I noticed when researching is the theme of change. This was prominent in the three main characters. Clarice wanted to become an FBI agent, Bill wanted a sex change and Hannibal wanted to change prison.

The Silence of the Lambs- Part one
This week we kept with the same groups! Our task was to analyse the films we were given, in particular the character's narrative and create a 'Schematic Diagram' showing the storyline of the characters as they were both on and off screen, creating backgrounds and additional storylines! We also had to create an artifact (this could be anything haha!) Our group was given 'The Silence of the Lambs'.. I had maybe seen parts of it before! Everyone seemed jealous of us but I had no idea why until I actually watched the film, it was incredible!

Week one- Part 3
I think the presentation went ok, when it came to mentor, the Archetype I was most interested in! I spoke well and full of knowledge, however as the presentation went on I got more and more nervous and made less and less sense! I just hope people understood the archetypes! I really enjoyed learning about Vogler's book. When Oisin was doing his presentation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaghV51k-W4&list=UU6NT-L_I_XMV0Ng5paP91Vw) he described Joseph Campbell's circle, with one half being the ordinary world and the other half being the special world. This really helped me understand the flow of narrative.
I also read through this book that Clare put in her dropbox, which made the Writer's journey a more manageable and easily understood size: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7eb254z3h6c2nws/Summary_of_Hero_s_Journey.pdf?dl=0

Week one- Part two
When researching I took an interest in the current character's that filled these roles, which you could find in a surprising amount of films as they all follow the same pattern.
Here are some of the websites I used, I found tvtropes.org to be my favourite as it gave a list of the archetypes from different types of media.
The Archetype that I found most interesting was mentor, and so I spent most time on it! Being the '4' of my group meant that I had to do the presentation on my own and therefore I made it my duty to know the archetypes inside out!
Mentor:
This is a positive god-like figure that aids the hero through his journey giving him gifts such as wisdom or weapons. An example of this is Dumbledore.
http://www.slideshare.net/chrismurban/hero-archetype (Mentions Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell whocreated the Archetypes)
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MentorArchetype
http://www.thewritingnut.com/mentor-archetype/
https://prezi.com/igql7xdv46ik/mentor-archetype/
http://narrativefirst.com/articles/series/archetypal-characters
Threshold Guardian:
This is an obstacle that strengthens the hero, they keep the unworthy from entering and are therefore something that the hero must overcome. E.g. Draco Malfoy.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThresholdGuardians
http://harrypotterforwriters.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/threshold-guardians-at-forbidden-door.html (As a class we were going to do the presentation looking particularly at Harry Potter, this site was particularly useful with regards to that)
Herald:
The Herald is the person in the story that foreshadows change! They come along and call the hero to adventure, getting the ball rolling! Hagrid is an examle of this.
https://debravega.wordpress.com/2013/09/23/writers-know-your-archetypes-the-herald/
http://www.whythisisgood.com/?p=697
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Herald
After the research was complete we looked at completing the actual presentation.
