[Johanna walks in in a pink shirt]
Finnick: Oh, my god.
Peeta: Johanna is wearing pink! Johanna is wearing pink!
Finnick: Are we sure it’s not just a white shirt that’s been bloodied in a motorcycle crash?
Beetee: Or maybe it wasn’t her. Does she have a twin sibling?
Haymitch: If Johanna had a twin she would have eaten them in the womb.

every time I see a photo of the victors together I'm just filled with devastation
because dude.... we'll never know what these guys were put through
they had whole LIVES in this system--and most of them died without seeing freedom
what these guys survived just makes me sad

Wyatt dying for Lou Lou was the point. That is the point. That is what Wyatt saying she was their responsibility now, spending the days leading up to the Games watching out for her in training, and carrying her the rest of the interview night after the Capitol knocked her unconscious were for. He is his family's oddsmaker, but he also is an eighteen year old who had a set of morals, a full-time job as a miner, and life under the same oppression Haymitch lived under. While Haymitch was connecting with Ampert and his doves, Wyatt was watching out for Lou Lou. Haymitch and Maysilee both felt uncomfortable around her, so Wyatt watched out for her.
Yes, yes, 'he calculated the odds and knew he was dying for Lou Lou's low chances.' But Lou Lou was a tortured, frequently drugged, emaciated teenage girl who could only sparingly communicate, and Wyatt spent nearly all his time with her after she arrived. Wyatt's entire self isn't only being an oddsmaker. Caring for her was never related to increasing chances.
In discussing what Wyatt cared the most about with Mags and Wiress, Wyatt placed his allies above food, water, and weapons. Of course he would die protecting Lou Lou. She was his ally above all else. Wyatt would never leave her to die.

Not Haymitch being the legal guardian of Katniss in Capitol and District 13.
In mockingjay,
Haymitch is annoyed about Katniss ripping off her earpiece, and he is showing her different PERMANENT earpiece option as a threat.
He specifically says, " I will AUTHORIZE them to surgically implant this transmitter into your ear".
Authorize, not ask them or tell them but AUTHORIZE.
That imples he has had to NOT authorize previous District 13 demands. Just like in the Capitol with breast enhancement surgery.
Few pages back, Asterid says how she didn't know Katniss was going to 8 till she was already gone. And Katniss goes, I'm sorry I'll ask them to clear everything with you.
And asterid replies, "Katniss no one clears anything from me".
Asterid is not Katniss' Legal Guardian anymore, Haymitch is. He has been running around for god knows how long keeping her safe and sane.
The I wonder is he the reason Katniss got discharged from the hospital while Finnick stays in a drug haze?
Is he the reason they leave her be when she doesn't follow schedule?
Is he the reason they let her hide in pipes and closets?
And I'm reminded of lil Haymitch taking care of even littler children during his games. Wondering why they all come to him. And he's fails to keep any one of them alive.
Except Katniss. That's a daughter thrusted to him. And he's trying so fucking hard to not let her die too.
I'm gonna go cry now
#why do all the little ones stick to me

I have a very specific set of images in my head so I present this on a platter to the room. If anyone wants to take it and run with it, PLEAAAAAASE do so!
It's this line that Snow says to Haymitch
“Bet I know a thing or two about your dove.”
“Like what?”
“Like she’s delightful to look at, swishes around in bright colors, and sings like a mockingjay. You love her. And oh, how she seems to love you. Except sometimes you wonder, because her plans don’t include you at all.”
"she's delightful to look at"
An image of a tiny Peeta, peering around his dad's legs (you only see his dad's legs - the focus is on Peeta's face) and he's looking over at a little girl up ahead who is giving her father a great big hug as they're being called into class. You can only see the girl profile, but she just EXUDES joy, looking up at her father - everyone else around is kind of blurred - but she's in perfect focus. Like color is emanating out from her smile.
"swishes around in bright colors"
young Peeta is sitting at his desk, gazing intently at the front of the classroom, where a young girl is being helped up onto a stool by a teacher.
she's wearing a clearly lovingly stitched plaid red dress. the red is the brightest color in the image.
her hair is tied in red ribbon braids. The ribbon is woven into the braids. The red of the ribbon is older, faded, more sedate than the dress - but it brings out the deep rich red.
the girl is looking up at her teacher, waiting for her cue to start.
"and sings like a mockingjay"
Young Peeta is leaning forward in his chair, eyes wide open, mouth slightly open - not a lot, only a little parted, almost as if he's forgotten to use the energy to keep his lips pressed together. outside of the window next to Peeta's desk, there is a bird and it's cocking it's head to the side, curiously.
"you love her"
young teen Peeta (15 or so) is once again peering past his father, who is at the backdoor of the shop making a trade with two young hunters. he's being as subtle as possible as he watches the transaction happen, from over his father's back.
(Katniss and Gale are in the foreground, you can only see their backs/side-profiles, Otho is leaning over to the counter on the side of the door to grab a couple of loaves of bread, Peeta is the camera focus of the picture, determinedly kneading on the center counter but flitting his gaze up to look over at the empty space his father has created)
"and, oh, how she seems to love you"
Peeta, waking up in the cave to find a needle in his leg. Katniss is laying next to him with blood flowing from her face.
his face is stricken, angry, shocked, awed, determined - a complicated, confusing mess
"except, sometimes you wonder"
Peeta is offering a bouquet of wildflowers to a shell-shocked Katniss along the train tracks.
Haymitch is in the background, approaching the two from the train. He hasn't quite reached them yet so the focus is on Peeta and Katniss, and Peeta's outstretched hand. you can see Haymitch approaching from over Peeta's forearm.
"because her plans don't include you at all"
Peeta is walking away from Katniss, his hands in his pockets and looking down.
from behind him you can see Katniss, holding tightly to the wildflowers in one hand. she is crestfallen and is almost slightly raising her other hand as if she's trying to reach out for him
#actually obsessed with this#may or may not have already tried and failed to draw this but I may keep going#It’s such a good vision but I cannot execute it ack

Katniss: You look like a corpse that was just pulled out of the river.
Haymitch: Wrong. I look like a cool rock star who just OD’d in his own pool. Big difference.

Can we take a moment to talk about how GREAT the score for Sunrise on the Reaping is going to be? The Hunger Games score has a special place in my heart, and James Newton Howard is going to make us all an emotional wreck once again.

something I'm kinda sad they omitted from the catching fire movie:
when finnick and katniss get the salve after the fog and cover their faces in it and prank wake up peeta by scaring him
ik its doesnt fit the 'theme' of the movie and yknow fighting for survival but it's so silly and goofy and truly just a nice little moment between them right after mags and the district 6 woman's death to let off some steam
like in 24hrs finnick goes from katniss' kill list, to unwanted ally, to lets be silly and prank peeta. like yes this is what a 17yo and a 24yo would do in a moment of whimsy just because why not

The point of Snow's story is that he made a CHOICE to be a disgusting human being. He saw people like Gaul and decided that he wanted to be like them because he thought there was nothing more powerful in the world.
The point of Lucy Gray and Katniss and every time a tribute or enemy showed someone unexpected kindness, that's the proof that there is something more powerful than oppression and ruling by fear. Drawing people in and leading them with empathy and the hope of a softer world. THAT is the most powerful thing.
