Honestly I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, but visual kei has completely lost its meaning. These new bands (and new fans) are killing the legacy of the sub-culture. From the 80’s to 00’s there was so much creativity in the community. You could tell bandman apart, they all had a distinct style of visuals and music. Now all bands are based off each other and the music is subpar at best. Throughout all the late 10’s to now, there’s been maybe 3 bands that came along and captivated me (not including bands who have older/more experience bandmen). There is no more shock value, no more talent, and the merch they produce is total ass. Turning to the fans, it’s not much better. When I first joined the community there was a lot of DIY and fun cosplays of different bandmen, now it’s all jirai and fast fashion catering to “alt” people. No one knows about the terminology in the community or the history behind the subculture. People call themselves “vkei” and like the same 5 bands, you always see the same recycled jokes all posted by “Mana’s no.1 fan” or “Sena’s guitar”. The bands and the fans have all become clones of each other and there is no longer any individuality. Visual 系 is pretty much dead.
There’s so much more I want to say but I’ll leave it at this for now (Thank you for @lttlmilks for inspiring me to post this after talking about their grievances within their own community)
