saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.
her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.
icon. legend. diva. i wish her nothing but a kajillion million comments and kudos. i hope her fic updates crash AO3. i hope she knows i'm promoting her to my personal patron saint of AO3.

"came back wrong" this "lived wrong" that, what about dying wrong. my death will forever cling to you, leaving behind a slimy trail and a metallic taste in your mouth. my soul will forever drag you down like the heavy corpse of a long-dead god, who somehow still grants wishes. you can't tell which one of us is the one not letting go. you know not even your own death will end this.

my favorite scene in LotR as a kid was when Sam started miserably freestyling in the tower of Cirith Ungol and the only reason he ever found Frodo was because he deliriously tried to join in

Echoes in the Static
Prologue: The Boy in the Stall
It was quiet in the third-floor girls’ bathroom. Too quiet.
The type of quiet that presses in, like cotton stuffed into your ears and lungs. Outside, the wind stirred the trees of Kamome Academy, and the city carried on, oblivious. But here, in this tiny, tiled room with flickering fluorescent lights, something had changed.
The fourth stall—always locked, always just slightly colder than the others—breathed.
Not the kind of breath a living thing takes, not warm or rhythmic. No. This was something... hollow. Like a sigh held in for far too long.
A boy sat slumped against the back wall of that stall. Neat uniform. Messy hair. A black hat that had no business following him past death still sat atop his head. His hands, pale and trembling, lay limp in his lap.
He didn’t remember dying.
Not exactly.
There had been a flash of light. The sharp sting of cold steel. His own voice—broken and scared and small—echoing in a room too dark to be their house.
And then silence.
He opened his eyes to nothing.
No warmth. No stars. No Tsukasa.
Just this bathroom.
Hanako—no, Amane—lifted a hand and stared at it. It looked like his hand. It felt like his hand. But there was no pulse under the skin. No warmth in his fingertips.
He wasn’t breathing. He hadn’t even realized that until now.
“I’m dead,” he whispered, voice raw and distant.
The room didn’t echo. Ghosts didn’t have echoes.
He tried to stand, but something pinned him to the stall—something heavy, like guilt. Like a promise unkept. The tile beneath him was ice-cold, and it hurt his bones in a way no living body could feel.
He blinked once.
Twice.
And then the tears came.
Silent, desperate. Not for himself—but for the boy he left behind. The one who smiled too much. The one who trusted him too deeply. The one whose last look had been confusion, not fear.
“Tsukasa…”
His voice cracked like breaking glass.
No answer. Just the light overhead buzzing, flickering once—then again.
The bathroom had forgotten how to be alive. Just like he had.
He didn’t know how long he sat there. Time didn’t matter when you weren’t alive to count it. The sky changed outside the high window, shifting from violet to ink, then back to morning gold. Students came and went, laughed and cried, but none of them noticed the boy in the fourth stall.
He had become something else.
Something between a memory and a punishment.
In that moment, Amane Yugi ceased to be.
And Hanako-san took his place.
