Liza (39 years old. Full name - Elizabeta Calathes): a Greek-American woman originally from Chicago. Liza was a radio operator who came to Rapture to help establish the wireless communications system, then had a successful stint as a producer and DJ/host on Radio Rapture. She was never a fan of Cohen’s iron grip over the art and music scenes, but keeping her job was so dependent on his mood that she never openly spoke out in fear of retaliation. Liza’s refusal to stop airing Anna’s music after her death and subsequent blacklisting triggered Cohen to have her fired, and without a job Liza would have been just one of many splicers scrounging for ADAM in Apollo square when Jack came to Rapture if Lamb hadn’t approached her with the offer of helping the Family broadcast their messages to the city. Within the family’s ranks, Liza worked on communications and radio transmissions, since her expertise made her very well-versed in two-way radio, city intercoms, and accuvox technology; though she was also willing to serve as a foot soldier when needed. Due to the effects of ADAM poisoning, Liza suffered from near-constant pain after she began splicing.

Elliott (45 years old. Full name - Dr. Elliott Makinde): Elliott’s parents were Nigerian, but he himself was born and raised in Manchester. He came to Rapture shortly after earning his medical license because he wanted to open his own clinic, but a few of Rapture’s higher-ups were suspicious of his willingness to treat patients who otherwise couldn’t afford it (which sounded a lot like charity to Ryan’s ears). To avoid attention, Elliott’s clinic was in Skid Row, where the residents who came looking for his pro bono services were also a lot less likely to talk about him in a place where Ryan’s circle could overhear. During the civil war, a group of Atlas’s rebels came to his clinic looking for medical help, and Elliott tended to them while knowing who they were. When Ryan found out, he had Elliott thrown in Persephone, where he encountered doctor Lamb and fell in with the Rapture Family. He loved kids and always wanted children of his own, but he and his partner were never able to adopt. Within the family, he primarily worked as a physician for the sick/injured or a field medic on missions, but rarely if ever as a fighter, since he was a committed pacifist. ADAM sickness gave him the habit of tearing at his face when distressed, so Elliott had a series of scars on his cheeks, forehead, and around his eyes.

Grace’s words inspire questions that Doctor Lamb isn’t keen on answering. Fortunately, the good doctor is too preoccupied with a side project to notice when people start asking.

While all three of the main bioshock villains are compelling antagonists in their own right, there’s something about Sofia Lamb’s “believing so hard in your own hypocrisy that you become the exact man you hated so much on both an ideological (the tyrant) and personal (Andrew Ryan) level” brand of villainy that’s extra juicy to me

I can’t say too much without spoiling a WIP of mine, but here are a few of my Grace and Anna headcanons!

They met because Anna wanted a vocalist for a song she was working on and someone brought up Grace as a possibility

That’s what initially brought them together, but their shared status as women in Sander Cohen’s arts scene led to them remaining close

(I’ve never believed that Sander Cohen would have been a particularly big Grace Holloway stan, and I believe that feeling was mutual. If Grace didn’t like Ryan or Fontaine, then there’s no way she thought very highly of Cohen)

After that initial collab, the two popped up in each other’s songs over and over again, to the point that “Anna and Grace” could almost be its own entity separate from both their solo work

Their partnership wasn’t conducive to either of them achieving broad success (again largely because of Cohen), but it did net them a devoted cult following in Rapture’s anti-establishment scene

Grace was always adamant about not using Anna’s connections to further her own career, and Anna did her best to respect that wish, even if a part of her wanted to help her friend achieve the success she deserved

They frequently attended each other’s performances

Anna was fond of putting on variety concerts that showcased artists who hadn’t earned Cohen’s stamp of approval. When she wasn’t performing in them (and sometimes when she was) Grace would often help organize these events

It was during these concerts that Grace met Jasmine and Anna met James. The four of them would go out for drinks after a show sometimes, but they never ended up becoming a tight-knit friend group

After James was kidnapped, Grace abruptly cut contact with Anna, both for her friend’s sake (she didn’t want Anna in trouble for associating with her while Ryan and Sullivan were still on her case) and her own (because Anna was number one on Sander Cohen’s hit list). Anna worried she’d been taken too until she heard about Grace doing concerts at the Limbo room again

They got in touch again through letters and radio calls, so Grace invited her to one of these concerts

The invitation was partially Lamb’s idea, because she was angling to get Anna on the family’s side through her connection to Grace

It didn’t work. Anna thought the family was Saturnine levels of fucked-up freaks when she met them and she had no problem telling Grace that

When she heard Anna was criticizing the family to one of its most loyal disciples, Lamb pressured Grace to cut Anna off for good

After that, they never saw each other again. Grace stopped going to Anna’s shows or inviting her to her own and stopped sending letters, care packages, or radio messages

Despite Lamb’s insistence that Anna was out to weaken the family, Grace couldn’t totally ice her friend out of her life. She’d still listen to Anna’s songs on the radio, and she treasured every letter, package, and radio message she got from her even if she no longer responded to them

But Grace had been out of touch with Anna for almost two years by the time Eleanor came to live with her

She only found out about Anna’s murder over the radio, and couldn’t even mourn her publicly for a decade

Years later, when the girls are home and she’s had a moment to breathe, Grace sets up a little memorial in her garden for all the friends she lost in Rapture who never received a proper funeral.

Anna’s got her own dedicated stone in that garden, decorated with the notes of the first song they worked on together

An unlikely ally gives Grace and the girls a chance to escape. However, there is no line Sofia Lamb won't cross in her quest for Utopia, including where her own daughter is concerned. With all hope lost, there's only one person in Rapture still willing to hear Eleanor Lamb's plea for help.

About 50 years old when Bioshock 2 took place, and was a teenager during the Great Depression

Was an only child growing up, which is why she wanted a large family when she came to Rapture

Taught herself musical theory, composition/arrangement, multiple styles of vocal music, and how to play several instruments (including piano, guitar, violin, flute, saxophone, and clarinet)

A big fan of Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, and Ella Fitzgerald. She did a lot of covers of their songs during her career

Agnostic but always loved going to church both for the music and for the friends she had there

Enjoyed a bit of success when she first arrived in Rapture, but she was never rich or famous by any means

Bill Macdonough and Anna Culpepper were her highest-profile fans. Bill recommended her to perform at some events for Rapture’s upper class before she was blacklisted (which shocked Cohen) and Anna collaborated with her on several occasions (which had Cohen coping seething malding)

James was a navy veteran who came to rapture as an engineer and fell head over heels for her. His faceclaim is James Edwards

He taught her Morse code trying to impress her. She snuck a Morse code “I love you” into his favourite song on a date once and he got so flustered he almost spilled his beer

James encouraged Grace to perform some of her original compositions protesting the bad living conditions under Ryan. She was so scared after he disappeared that she completely quit writing her own music for years

Grace and James were seriously discussing marriage when Ryan had him arrested. He had a ring picked out and everything

Only really fell in with the family after James disappeared. Lamb didn’t reach out directly until she was at her most vulnerable

Used to be good friends with Anna Culpepper due to their shared involvement in Rapture’s music scene despite Cohen’s hatred for them, but was pressured to cut off the relationship after Anna disapproved of Grace’s involvement in the family

Also knew Jasmine in passing due to their shared friend and performing arts backgrounds. They were on good terms, but Jasmine’s ties to Ryan and Grace’s ties to Lamb meant that they never ended up getting closer when they had the chance

Sometimes though, she’ll look at Jack and see him bite the inside of his cheek in a way that’s inexplicably familiar and wish she’d spent enough time with Jasmine to remember if she’s right about that quirk coming from her

Grace is the one who taught Eleanor to play the piano and read sheet music

Tried to quit smoking for Eleanor, but fell back into the habit when she was kidnapped. Quits again for the girls though

Because she does end up taking care of the rescued little sisters in every bs2 thing I create. If Sinclair is the Atlas to Delta’s Jack, then Grace is this game’s Tenenbaum

She and Sinclair absolutely hate each other, but when they’re both on the radio with Delta their styles of shit-talking are a surprisingly devastating combo

Grace and Tenenbaum first meet over the radio but eventually become extremely close when they bond over their guilt and shared mission to rescue the little sisters from Rapture

She knows some things, like that gatherers/protectors exist, that there’s something called a big sister in Rapture, and that little sisters are starting to roam around the city again, but she doesn’t know the how or the why and that’s a very deliberate choice on Lamb’s part

Grace is low key the glue holding the rapture family together by the end

Yeah Sofia is their leader and horrifically effective at keeping her flock under her thumb, however she’s usually too busy Omelas-ing Eleanor, being unethical, or monologuing to be very involved in their everyday lives.

But Grace is sharing the drudgery in a way that Lamb doesn’t; drinking the same watery booze, walking on the same rotting floorboards, and commiserating about all the things she’d do to convince her younger self not to come here if she had the chance, yet she still thinks this all leads to something greater, and that attitude works wonders for convincing others to quiet down their discontent and fall into step beside her.

If Simon Wales got pissed at Lamb that would be surprising but not completely unexpected: he’s running a fanatical utopian cult within a fanatical utopian cult, so of course he’d go rogue over some minor ideological schism. If Grace went rogue? It’d be a lot harder for Lamb to convince her followers that it was all for no good reason
