The first thing to keep in mind when choosing your DAW is the workflow. Is the interface intuitive? Does the control layout seem logical to you? Does the application provide all the recording and mixing features you’ll require? And most importantly, can it host VST plugins?

The best free digital audio workstations right now are Tracktion 7 and Cakewalk by BandLab. Both applications can load VST plugins.

Step 2: Downloading Free VST plugins

Now that you’ve picked your DAW, you’re all set to start building your collection of free VST plugins.

Always go for quality instead of quantity. The biggest mistake people make when discovering the world of free VST plugins is to download hundreds of VSTs and to hoard them on the hard drive. This is bad for your workflow, and it will slow down your productivity.

Imagine that your DAW is a real-world studio. Would you be able to make music in a room cluttered with hundreds of dusty instruments, effects, broken tapes, disconnected audio cables, and other gear that no one will ever use? You don’t want such a mess in your virtual studio, either.

Stay organized when choosing your virtual instruments and effects. This page is a great place to start because we listed only the best freeware VST plugins in each category.

What you need is a small but versatile collection of audio software that will cover all of your music production needs.

Take the time to examine the plugins on offer and keep only the ones that you really need. Keep your mixing toolbox lightweight and efficient. Limit yourself to no more than three virtual compressors, equalizers, synthesizers, etc. Install only the tools that best suit your workflow and learn how to use them. Read the manuals, watch the video tutorials, and spend some time experimenting with your free VST plugins.

VST plugins are virtual instruments and effects that you can use in productions. They can recreate classic synth designs, or represent completely new ways of making sound. VST plugins are easy to use; download them, install, and your DAW will pick them up and let you use them in the workstation. From classic instruments to experimental indie gems, there’s a huge world of both paid and free VST plugins to choose from. HOW TO USE VST PLUGINS FOR SYNTH SOUNDS

VST plugins can be used in a wide variety of ways to create synth sounds for songwriting and production. I believe this instrument has a super unique sound and once you know what it is, you will be able to pick it out amongst a mix of instruments. A mandolin VST is a virtual instrument that is built to emulate a mandolin as best as it possibly can. Sound engineers have been developing different techniques to get to the best results now for years. No matter if you’re making classical music, writing underscores or producing hip hop beats, harps are beautiful instruments that can add a whole other level of atmosphere to a track. Unfortunately, many commercial harp sample libraries are pretty expensive – especially if you want to use harp sounds only occasionally. That’s why I’ve put together a short list of good free harp VST plugins and libraries on this page.

Free Harps & Celtic Harps

Versilian Studios: Etherealwinds Harp II: Community Edition

Formats: VST, AU, SFZ

A few years ago, Versilian Studios released Etherealwinds Harp. This free harp VST became so popular that Versilian has now published version 2, which updates both interface and sound. Etherealwinds Harp II: Community Edition is a reduced version of Etherealwinds Harp II, which the company calls “quite possibly the most complete lever harp library in existence”.

The 255 samples span over five octaves (C2 – A6) and come across very smooth, harmonious and easy to blend into any soft, dreamy arrangement. To get more control over your sound, you can change the amp envelope, volume, pan and reverb. While not accessible through the instrument interface itself, the download of Etherealwinds Harp II Community Edition comes with seven effect samples (.wav) and 16 vocal samples, taken from the vocal library included in Etherealwinds Harp II.

DSK Music: DSK World StringZ

Format: VST

DSK World StringZ offers more than just harp sounds. In fact, the instrument includes a total of eight world instruments: cumbus, dobro, kanun, koto, dulcimer, tar, Turkish oud and a Celtic harp. Obviously, this Celtic harp is what I was mostly interested in for this list. Playing around with it, I found the sound to be quite present and earthy as I would expect from a Celtic harp. I especially enjoyed the lower tones, which feel a little more mysterious.

The interface offers you control over the amp envelope, the fine tuning and a filter (HP or LP). You can also automate all these values via MIDI. One word of warning: The fine tuning slider does not give you numeric values or offer a simple way to reset (that I know of) – so if you change the tuning, it might be difficult to get back to the original tuning setting. One feature that DSK World StringZ doesn’t have is a built-in reverb. Obviously, you can always slap on your DAW reverb (or any of your favorite effects plugins) if you want to add more space. No matter if you’re looking for a Celtic harp or if you can use some world strings in your production, this is a cool little plugin to try out!

DAT: Microharp

Format:Kontakt Library; full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 4.2.4 or higher is required

Microharp from Dream Audio Tools is another Celtic harp. In this case, a “very small wooden Celtic harp” was sampled with four round robins for each articulation. The instrument comes with two main articulations, picked and fingered, as well as with a patch that mixes both articulations. While the picked samples sound smoother and more traditionally harp-like, the fingered patch has an almost surprising “ethnic” feel to it. Its particular character might not work that well in classical pieces, but it could add some interesting textures to other genres.

The Kontakt library features four octaves, with the lowest note being C2 (not surprising due to the size of the instrument). For effects, it offers a delay and a reverb. Not a ton, but certainly useable!

Performance Samples: River Harp

Format: Kontakt Library; full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.5.1 or higher is required

River Harp by Performance Samples is a little different from most instruments in this article. Instead of offering individually plucked string samples, you will find a collection of textures and glissandi here. The name “River Harp” is quite a fitting description of the sound as the performances come across as flowing and organic. These are the kinds of textures that we composers and producers would love to create and re-create with harp VST plugins but typically have a hard time doing so.

While the sounds themselves are fun, using them can be tricky because they’re not time-synced. While this is not such an issue with the glissandi (which you wouldn’t expect to stick to being time-synced anyway), it might take some additional time stretching work to fit the textures into an existing arrangement.

What’s really cool (and definitely not expected for a free instrument) is that River Harp is recorded with two mics (close and far), which you can mix and pan to your taste. This added flexibility makes the River Harp easier to mix. The creators of River Harp also want you to know that some of the tails are cut-off and only minimal noise reduction was applied (the honesty is appreciated!).

Sonatina Symphony Orchestra Harp

Format: Kontakt Library; full retail version of Kontakt is required (unfortunately, I’m not sure which one, but I’m guessing 4 and higher).

Sonatina Symphony Orchestra was a project by Mattias Westlund. More than 10 years ago, he created a free orchestral sample library primarily aimed at beginner composers. Today, this original library is not online anymore, however, a derivative version still exists at Bigcat Instruments. This version also includes a concert harp patch, which I found surprisingly useable due to its straight, classical sound.

The Kontakt patch allows you to change the amp envelope, the reverb and the EQ (at 100 Hz, 1kHz and 5kHz – which turn out to be great frequencies to play with). I would probably use this with a convolution reverb, since the built-in reverb sounds somewhat unflattering (at least in the wetter settings).

Sonatina Symphony Orchestra Harp is super easy to install: Simply download and save the patch into your Kontakt libraries folder.

Other Harp Instruments

Decent Samples: Bowed Nagoya Harp (Taishōgoto)

Format: Kontakt Library; full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.3.1 or higher is required

Audio examples:

The Taishōgoto is also known as the Nagoya harp and is a relatively modern string instrument, being invented in 1912. The pitch of the individual strings can be changed by pressing a number of typewriter-like keys. Although the Taishōgoto is typically strummed, for this Kontakt library by Decent Samples, the instrument was played with a violin bow. So if you’re looking for a plucked sound, this instrument won’t match your needs.

Celtic Instruments Vst Free

Instead, this library offers a texture-heavy bowing sound that lies somewhere between viola, harmonica and world instrument (check out the audio example to hear what it sounds like). While this is maybe not the most powerful sound on its own, I could imagine using this as a layer to add an interesting texture. One drawback I found while playing it is that the samples are somewhat short and the loop very noticeable. Unfortunately, this means that the library is not great for creating longer static pad sounds (if you use different note start points, you can achieve a nice effect where notes are rhythmically fading in and out, though).

Besides ADSR envelope and reverb, you also have control over the level of the two microphones that were used: an Oktava mic and a contact microphone. Since these are quite different in character, I’ve found it fun to play around with them and dial in a sound I enjoy.

New sample libraries are released all the time and it’s hard to keep track of which ones are worth getting.

In this article I will list a total of 14 strings libraries; 7 free ones and another 7 paid ones that sound fantastic.

Layers (Windows, Mac)

Layers is an orchestral sample library that features Brass-, Woodwinds- and Strings sections, as well as a Full Orchestra, and it’s designed to run on the SINE Player for free.

It gives you the option to choose between different microphone placements and it also features different articulations.

In total, the whole orchestral pack is about 17GB and runs on both Windows and Mac OS.

Orchestral Strings One (Windows)

The instruments included in this library are; 14 Violins, 10 Violas, 8 Cellos and 6 Double Basses.

To be honest, they sound absolutely fantastic, considering it’s free and a bit dated.

Getting good sampled strings to sound real is actually hard, and even though these ones don’t sound EXACTLY like the real deal, they come really close.

All the samples were recorded utilizing the legendary acoustics in the famous Berliner Hall, home of the Berliner Philharmoniker.

These are not static samples, thanks to the modelling technology of this plugin, which means that they will sound much more real.

Orchestral Strings One focuses on the continuous flow of melody, not just on a single note.

For example, you can progressively transform a sustained note by first adding slow vibrato, then medium vibrato and finally fast vibrato.

Orchestral Strings One is fairly simple to use and it can be controlled via a MIDI keyboard.

Spitfire Audio: Free Strings (Windows, Mac)

I mentioned Spitfire’s LABS plugins in quite a lot of posts already since they are absolutely fantastic and FREE.

As far as strings go, they offer six different alternatives for you to choose from; Strings, Strings 2, Scary Strings, Frozen Strings, Amplified Cello Quartet and Monochord.

I’m a big fan of the Scary Strings library since it gives out that scary abandoned mansion vibe, but all of them sound very realistic! Free autopan vst.

Every single one of these libraries come with included presets, are available in VST2, VST3, AAX and AU formats and work on both Windows and Mac.

DSK Strings (Windows)

DSK has one of the widest selections of free plugins I’ve ever seen; from guitars to drums, synthesizers, and more, and of course, strings.

It offers controls for attack, decay, sustain and release, as well as some other useful effects such as stereo spread, a delay, flanger, reverb, and octave control.

It has two strings sections that play simultaneously, and considering it’s 100% free, it does sound quite nice.

Etherealwinds Harp (Windows, Mac)

Etherealwinds Harp is a sampling of a diatonic folk harp recorded by the Newgrounds musician Etherealwinds.

This is a folk harp, which means that when compared to the traditional harp, it has a smaller range.

The sound quality is actually quite good and it’s very easy to use.

Features:

Diatonically sampled, 2x RR, 3 velocity layers.

Celtic Lever/Folk Harp with a delicate, warm tone.

Full Decays Sampled.

Samples are mono (Kontakt version includes faux stereo width option).

NKI version included.

Sonatina Harp (Windows, Mac)

The Sonatina Harp, contrary to the previous harp on this list, is a sampled classical Harp.

These samples were edited from the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra sample library.

Ample Guitar M Lite (Windows, Mac)

This is an acoustic guitar plugin that sounds absolutely fantastic while also giving you the option to add some effects which are directly built-in.

You can even double the guitar with the simple press of a button, which will add width and body to the sound.

Nightlife free vst synthesizer. Helm is a cross-platform, polyphonic synthesizer which runs both as a standalone synthesizer or as an LV2, VST, VST3 or AU plugin. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This plugin is open source which means that you can modify it and even redistribute your modified versions. A free and very versatile synth VST, Tunefish 4 can infuse life in your compositions through its powerful presets. 15) OSL Chorus Free Chorus Plugin An emulation of the chorus effect module of Roland Juno 60 hardware synthesizer, OSL chorus is strictly meant for fans of euphoric choruses in the mix.

As far as realism goes, I haven’t been able to find any other free guitar plugin that sounds this great, so definitely give it a shot.

Best Strings VST Plugins

As far as paid orchestral & strings VST libraries go, there are definitely a lot to choose from.

I will list the ones I think are the best here, but just know that most of the paid libraries available actually do sound extremely good.

Cinematic Studio Strings ($399)

Recorded by Australia’s finest musicians, the Cinematic Studio Strings VST library offers a gorgeous sound with realistic dynamics and a wide variety of articulations.

The articulations range from Legato, Spiccato and Staccato, Tremolo, Trills, Marcato, and more.

Here’s a video showcasing all of them;

CSS also runs on KONTAKT and KONTAKT Player, which is the free version, and sells for $399.

Analog Strings by Output ($199)

This library features two strings orchestras, vintage synths, and unconventional elements for sound design, which means that it differs from the traditional orchestral string libraries quite a lot.

It is important to note that Analog Strings is a KONTAKT Instrument that features a two-layer playback engine; however, you don’t need the full version of KONTAKT since it will run on the Free KONTAKT Player.

Some of the unconventional sounds it has to offer are a plucked piano, tape echoes and guitar resonance, and all of the available presets, which are 500, can be accessed through the menu and searched by category.

In addition to the presets, Analog Strings comes with a set of tools, such as step sequencers, effects like reverb and delay, modulations, a dual arpeggiator, and more, to help you shape the sound to your needs.

Lastly, you also have the ability to use soloist patches of recordings of contrabass, cellos, viola and violin.

Strings Ensemble by Native Instruments ($199 – $499)

Of course, since this is a Native Instruments library, it runs on both Kontakt and the free version of it, Kontakt Player.

The String Ensemble is a 60-piece string section, featuring close to 75.000 samples, and recorded at Studio 22, Budapest.

Its interface is super clean and intuitive to use, plus the sound is simply extraordinary, as with all NI libraries.

String Ensemble offers advanced performance control for clarity and realism, such as:

Auto Divisi; All instruments were recorded as separate A and B divisi sections, which offers a way of arranging accurate and realistic performances for all articulations.

True Polyphonic Legato and Portamento: All sections feature true polyphonic legato and portamento, with up to eight-voice automatic voice-leading in real time.

If you’re looking for a realistic-sounding strings section, you can’t go wrong with this one.

It is available in two versions; The Symphony Essentials, which is a smaller stripped-down version, and the Symphony Series.

Different Strings Libraries by Spitfire ($249 – $799)

While two of these libraries may be more expensive than almost any other one on this entire list, they are also considered by many to be the best strings libraries to have ever been released.

I will be including three strings libraries in this section; the Studio Strings library, the Symphonic Strings library, and the Chamber Strings library.

Let’s have a quick look at each of them:

Studio Strings

Recorded by London’s best session players and by engineer Simon Rhodes, this is a great-sounding yet simple and small strings library, with violins, violas, cellos and double basses.

It is available in two formats; Studio Strings and Studio Strings professional, which is more extensive.

It features 148 articulations across the full 30-piece string section, from legato and super-flautando, right down to spiccato, hairpins, grace notes, and FX.

Symphonic Strings

Recorded at AIR Studios and featuring 60 players performing 175 articulations, including legatos, and presented in three different microphone positions, this is one of the largest libraries ever created.

If you need a big sound, this is definitely it.

Note: Also check the Hans Zimmer library if you need something big… I will describe that one in a bit.

Chamber Strings

Recorded by 16 of the best session players at the AIR Studios, this library is smaller than the Symphonic strings one, but it also features three different microphone positions and 244 articulations, as well as individual sections and ensembles.

Now, all of these libraries give you in-depth control over the instruments, plus they are extremely easy to use thanks to the streamlined interface.

It is important to note that these libraries are now only available for KONTAKT, and they even come with the free version included.

CineStrings Core by CineSamples ($399)

Cinestrings CORE has a very intuitive and easy to use graphical interface with quickly selectable presets that can help you write, program and mix to your specific needs, and it also contains the basic set of articulations needed to do most of the traditional writing and programing for the string section.

One important thing to note is that CineStrings works on the KONTAKT Player (Free version), specifically 5.8.1 or above.

On the mapping page you can quickly manipulate the velocity, key-switching or even midi continuous controller articulation switching.

On the mixer page you will have access to the full mix or the four other microphone positions.

The settings page allows for advanced control over each of the patches for sound design, programming and other useful features.

One key feature that sets CineStrings Core apart from other strings libraries is the “Hairpin Creator”, which is a setting that allows for automatic “Swells” control without having to program a series of controller changes in, automating the volume changes yourself later on, etc.

Hans Zimmer strings by Spitfire Audio ($799)

You probably already know who Hans Zimmer is; he’s the guy who created the soundtracks for The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and other high-budget movies.

Spitfire Audio teamed up with him to create the biggest orchestral library ever created; 344 players, 26 microphone positions, and over 250GB of samples.

The interface is extremely clean and clutter-free, which makes this software quite easy to use, despite its huge size, plus navigating through the 246 presets has been done in such a way that makes the whole process very intuitive.

Now, this library wasn’t designed to be used with KONTAKT, like some of the other Spitfire Libraries, in fact, it’s available in VST, AU and AAX formats and it loads directly into any DAW.

EastWest Hollywood Strings ($106 – $156.60)

Of all the paid libraries on this list, the EastWest Hollywood Strings library is definitely the most affordable one, with the Gold edition selling for $106 and the Platinum one for $156.60.

However, don’t let the price fool you; it’s absolutely astonishing.

Hollywood Strings offers great control over the sound and performance; from different articulations to 5 different mixable microphone positions.

In the Diamond Series you will have access to “Divisi”; In orchestration there are sometimes players that share the same stand playing different notes, and in the close mics when you use Divisi, it separates the two, sending one left and the other right to let you hear them independently.

In addition to this, the Hollywood Strings library comes with a convolution reverb that has a lot of different spaces to put your strings into, as well as a stereo double control to further control the stereo image of the orchestra.

Lastly, not only can you straight up buy the Hollywood Strings library, but you can also sign up to a $20 monthly subscription and get it that way, if you feel like trying it out first.

As far as the paid libraries go and considering the differences in price, I would have to say that my number one recommendation is Hollywood Strings.

I won’t waste time talking about the original 808 drum machine. After all, it is the Citizen Kane of drum machines, the Macbeth of grooves, the Sgt. Pepper of cowbells. You know it. You love it. You use it. You have 17 gigabytes of it.

So, what sets this one apart?

Yoshinosuke Horiuchi’s free SC-808 drum machine is built on the SuperCollider platform, an open-source, cross-platform audio programming environment.

Horiuchi claims that it’s “the most flexible 808 emulation ever” and that does appear to be the case. The thing is, the SC-808 does not use samples as the sound source but is instead built from the ground up completely.

The fact that the software is running on SuperCollider comes with a pro and a potential con.

SC-808’s source code can be freely edited, meaning that one could customize and fine-tune the emulation exactly as they would like it. I’m no coder by any means, but even I was able to understand the basic gist of it. If you’ve ever edited a Reaper plugin, you’ll know just how easy and intuitive it is to mess around with audio code.

Here’s how the developer describes this feature:

The modifiable and customizable feature by coding is the most iconic feature of the SC-808 and that is different from the original TR-808 and its software clones. That is, the users can access the SuperCollider code (which is also called the “Circuit”) and make their own custom 808 with ease. Something like this wouldn’t be possible with any other virtual 808. I included a few modification examples with tutorials for beginners.

Conversely, SuperCollider needs to be routed to your DAW (and vice versa) externally as there’s no built-in VST support of any kind. How the routing works is beyond the scope of this article, but below you’ll find a handy diagram provided by the creator. The basic idea is that your DAW should send MIDI to SuperCollider and receive audio from it.

Again, here are some useful tips from the developer:

The basic method is very similar to using an external hardware synth in your DAW. You are sending MIDI messages from the DAW to the instrument. After that, the synth outputs audio signals and the DAW receives them. SuperCollider works as an “external synth” and the DAW has to set an external MIDI track and a receiving audio track.

In practice, the routing will vary from one digital audio workstation to another. As for third-party software, Soundflower should be able to do this on Mac and the JACK Audio Connection Kit should work for Windows and Linux.

The core version of SC-808 is free. You can download it from the developer’s Patreon page, install it, connect it to your DAW, and make some cool 808 sounds with it.

That said, an “Advanced” version of SC-808 featuring full tuning of every sound, different filters (Moog, 303, and HPF), and more, is coming out sometime before the end of August. It features many controls and parameters that can be overwhelming to a beginner, but satisfying to a pro.

Now, about its sound, which should be the primary reason to using a synthesizer. Considering that it’s loosely modeled off the Roland JP8000, its users have considered it one of the best sounding free VST synths on the freeware market. Expect it to have a fairly unique sound suitable for trance, new age, electronic music, house, or even pop. The pads are what many users consider its most attractive asset, because of the richness and thickness of the sounds that the P8 produces.

It features 2 oscillates that will producer sine, sawtooth, ramp, triangle, pulse waveforms, as well as white noise and pink noise. And discoDSP’s OB-Xd is constantly referred to as the “best” as well. And listening to its sounds, utilizing it’s interface, and working with its features, it’s hard to not see why this synth isn’t actually THE best. But, so are many of the others on the list…

So, what makes this one unique?

For starters, it was modeled on the Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 synthesizers. These classic vintage hardware synths were famous back in the day, and contributed to many hit records. Right now, they continue to enjoy their legacy in this freeware plugin.

The developers claim that they are not “copying” the originals, but rather take the same features and improve upon them. Whatever that means, it just sounds good to me.

Expect all the features you should find in a standard synthesizers, as well as some cool sounding features like the “continuous blendable multimode filter,” which is a filter allowing you to blending different filter types (such as high-pass, band-pass) in different dB modes. 2. XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2

If you like the look of Superior Drummer 3 but find it a little out of your budget, you’ll be happy to know that this VST is just a fraction of the price. Addictive Drums 2 is aimed at home recording enthusiasts who need a database of high-quality drum kits on a moderate budget.

This VST has won awards and plaudits around the world for managing to create an impressive library of kit sounds. There are over 5000 drum beats and fills in total in Addictive Drums 2. This is a lot of drums, by anyone’s standards.

If you’re not the most technically minded when it comes to music you’ll find the numerous presets extremely useful. They’re laid out in a way which makes it easy to pick and choose what type of drummer you want. You can choose the genre and customize the beat and kit sound. On the other hand, if you prefer to take full control over the kit from the get-go, then you can import your sounds, bit by bit and build the drum track that way instead.

Addictive Drums 2 has lots of effects to play with too. There are EQs, reverbs, delays, compression, distortions and a few others. You also have mixing capabilities such as buses for any parallel processing.

For the money XLN Audio’s Addictive Drums 2 packs quite a punch. It’s one of the most popular drum VST plugins around. The spec says it will work with most setups on only 2 GB of RAM (although they recommend at least 4 GB). To put this in context, Superior Drums 3 by Toontrack requires at least 8 GB of RAM. This makes Addictive Drums more suited to amateur setups and also explains the pricing. It lacks a few of the elite features of Superior Drummer 3 but makes up for that with value for money.

3. FXpansion BFD3

BFD is a drumming VST which has been around for some years now. It’s widely considered one of the top drum VSTs around. BFD has a huge collection of drum samples and loops which you can incorporate into mixes at the click of a mouse. The main man behind the sound sourcing on BFD3 actually worked for 2 years with George Massenburg, who we previously mentioned with Superior Drummer 3.

In total there is 162 GB of sample sounds, but wait, just before you throw your arms up, the makers have managed to squeeze this down into a mere 55 GB. How they did that, we’re not quite sure, but it does mean that you can now carry this entire portfolio of drumming goodness around on a tiny 64 GB flash drive. This makes it super-convenient when working across different setups.

BFD3 contains grooves played by legendary drummers such as Steve Ferrone, Brooks Wackerman, Peter Erskine and more. They’ve added 12 new effects too, which brings the total up to 33. Some of these include DCAM overdrive, new reverbs and envelope shaping tools.

When seeking to get started with a drum track you can choose to build your own kit or pick from one of the finely crafted presets. There’s a fully editable groove engine with a very handy rudiments tool. This tool allows you to work with many of the standard drum rudiments in order to create drum fills. It has many cool features which make it a pleasure to use, and lots of slickly edited samples and loop which are a breeze to work with. This VST works well along with a DAW or as a standalone. It also has full MIDI operational compatibility.

4. Steven Slate Drums SSD5

If you’re after a quick and convenient drag and drop type of drum VST then you may like the SSD5 by Steven Slate Drums. This VST comes with lots of different kit sounds which are split up into different categories and styles.

There are kits such as the Spicy Rock kit, Old ‘n’ Dusty, the Thick Metal kit, the Pure 60’s kit, Steven’s Oldie kit, the Savage kit, the Ribeye kit and more. You can probably tell from the names as to how these kits sound. It’s pretty straightforward. In total there are around 100 drum presets and a couple of cool features such as ‘Rimshot’ mode. This allows you to replace drum accents with rimshot hits for added attack.

Overall, the SSD5 by Steven Slate Drums is a decent drum VST with a lot going for it. It’s easy to use and quite light on computer resources too.

5. GetGood Drums Modern & Massive Pack

For rock and metal fans we have a nice little drum VST without any additional fluff. GetGood Drums produce VSTs for the modern market and this particular pack is aimed at a bigger, punchier drum sound.

There is a nice selection of drum kits, all of which have been recorded at Middle Farm Studios in the UK. These kits certainly pack a punch, so if that’s what you’re after then this VST may be for you. It’s certainly one of the best-sounding acoustic drum VSTs around.

6. Tony Coleman Drums

Tony Coleman is one of the most famous names in blues drumming. He has played with legends such as B.B. King, Albert King, Etta James and Buddy Guy, among others.

With this collection from Sonivox we get access to an entire library of the great man’s sound and feel. This VST is aimed at lovers of blues, pop and rock. All sounds have been captured at Ardent Studios using only the best professional drum microphones.

Not so versatile with genres.

This entire collection is only 20 GB in size, so it’s not one of the more bulky drum VSTs out there. In that 20 GB you’ll find beats, fills and individual sample hits as played by Tony himself. This is certainly one for lovers of a great R’n’B groove.

7. DJinnDrum

The DJinnDrum VST is a nice little free drum VST plugin which has apparently been used by megastars such as Michael Jackson, Prince and Peter Gabriel. Listening to the beginning of ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ by Micheal Jackson will give you an idea of what this drum machine is capable of.

It’s very easy to use with 12 drum pads to play with. There are also slidable faders for the volume of each voice and knob controls to alter the sounds further.

Not a good acoustic sounding drum VST.

For the money we can’t argue with the DJinnDrum VST. It’s free to download so be sure to check it out. It lacks gigabytes of sample libraries but is quaint and fun to use. Definitely one to have in your collection of VST plugins.

8. DrumTROOP

If you’re looking for a VST with a few more drum sound options, then the DrumTROOP might fit the bill. This VST is packed with 20 free drum kits. These kits are largely digital-sounding drum kits and perfect for lots of genres from hip-hop to dubstep to EDM and pop.

The layout is clean and easy with lots of controls to alter the sample sounds. A very cool electronic drum VST.

Not the most stable on some systems/DAWs.

DrumTROOPS is a cool little VST and is sure to help out budding music producers. Some users have complained about this VST being a little unstable on certain DAWs.

In order to avoid any unwanted crashing we advise that once you have created your beat on DrumTROOPS, then you should bounce it down to an audio file. Next import that audio file into your mix, disable the VST and you should find no further conflicts.

Having a fast system and plenty of RAM is always a good idea when making music on your computer. Processing will be quicker and you should notice a drop in any latency issues too.

Having a fast processor means that the VST and the DAW can work easily together and this means there will be less chance of your system crashing and you losing unsaved work.
