Boats and bikes
Wednesday morning Jose had another driving lesson. The rest of us had been invited out on Katharine and Stephen’s boat and we jumped at the chance. We headed out to pick up croissants and then down to the town beach where we hoped on board.
It was another stunning morning. Unfortunately we didn’t see any sun fish or dolphins but there were heaps of fish where we stopped for a swim and breakfast. Today I went in sans neoprene. It was bracing but after a while not too bad.
Back home we all got ready for a bike ride. Today’s route started with us riding part of our Hannibal route in reverse and even passing by where we stayed 11 years ago when we all did Hannibal together.
From there we headed to Monells for a quick bite to eat. There I was talked into taking the long route home (I was bribed with a promised stop at a great bakery in Torrella de Montgri). Up until last week my longest ride had been 55km and that was back in January. Last week I did two rides over 55km. This week I’ve now done two rides over 65km. Needless to say I was quite a shattered bunny when we got home and very happy to stop and have a sangria or two at the beach on the way through.
While Jose and I then chilled poor Phil and Michelle had to start packing up bikes. The plan is one today and one tomorrow morning.
Bike packing done we headed to the beach for a vermut before going to Ultramar for dinner. It’s a stunning location and we thought only fitting for their last night. It was a lovely evening tinged with a little sadness 🥲

Enjoying the sun
This morning Jose headed off early for his driving lesson while we all had a more relaxed start. We wandered down to the town beach and Michelle and I swam. The water is definitely warming up. We both had neoprene on but our faces didn’t hurt and the parts of us sans neoprene didn’t feel too bad. Unfortunately the fish let me down and Michelle only saw one. A shame as I saw quite a few on the way out, though admittedly none on the way back.
By the time we got back it was almost time for Jose to get home. Mich and I quickly got ready and then the four of us set off for a leisurely walk to St Marti.
En route we stopped first at the same chiringuito where we all had coffee before visiting the ruins on our Hannibal trip 11 years ago.
Next stop was a chiringuito next to St Marti. I was worried we were going to be early for our booking but next thing we were so relaxed I was worried we wouldn’t get to see the village before lunch.
As always lunch at L’Esculapi was fabulous. I discovered a new favourite dish - monk fish in a marinara sauce, yum. While we were there we bumped into Fiona and Andrew and their daughter Joanna and her children.
We wandered home glad for the walk to shake off some of our lunch. We got back in time to see the end of the Giro. It’s getting really exciting now. A few nanna naps were then had before we met up with Katharine and Stephen at Els Barrils. They had left their flat so their daughter Jessica could entertain some friends. Given they were at a bit of a loose end we invited them back and got out a bunch of nibbles for us all to graze on. It was such a fun night and so impromptu.
As our Canadian friend Charlie would say - life is good in L’Escala 🥂

Enjoying L’Escala
Monday morning was beautiful, a little too chilly for breakfast on the balcony but a beautiful day for a ride. We took Phil and Michelle on one of our favourite rides that goes to a water mill and crosses a causeway. It’s got a few punches in it so thankfully I had managed to do a little bit of riding before they arrived.
Being a Monday we had a little bit of trouble finding an open bar or cafe so had to wait until we got to Albons Social Club which was actually quite nice. From there a quick trip back to L’Escala and down to the beach for a post ride jug of sangria and anchovies 😋
A quick lunch out in the balcony and then it was time for Jose to head off for his driving lesson. Meanwhile we did some washing, etc before heading up to the bike shop and then to meet Jose after his lesson.
Back down to the beach for a pre dinner drink and tapas. The weather was perfect all day and we had dinner out on the balcony. A big day, it was getting on for midnight when I turned the light out.

The festivities continue
Saturday morning it was still blowing a gale and forecast for the winds to be up around 35km/h. It was however a lovely sunny day, so after getting some washing, etc done we headed out to do some shopping.
The weather actually wasn’t that bad. It was sunny and quite warm if you were out of the wind. We possibly could have cycled but we had a productive day anyway and before going out for dinner I’d walked over 8kms.
We just made it to our anchovy bar for our Saturday usual before it was time to pick up our rotisserie chook. The rest of the afternoon was spent washing and watching the Giro. An exciting stage.
In the evening we met up with Katharine and Stephen for Stephen’s birthday dinner. It always a fun night with those two.
Sunday morning was beautiful. My plans to cycle went out the window the previous night when K&S asked if I’d like to go out on their boat. I know lolling about on their boat eating croissants and drinking coffee isn’t going to help me kick my creeping weight gain but it’s a beautiful way to spend a morning (and to be fair I did at least get in the water, though I probably expended more energy getting the neoprene on and off than I did actually swimming 😬).
This morning was a cracker. We saw an organised swim, a sun fish, heaps of birds and the pièce de résistance was seeing dolphins on the way home!
Meanwhile Jose had gone for a ride. We met up for a drink and some last minute groceries before heading home for lunch and last minute preparations before Phil and Michelle arrive, oh and some Giro watching.
It was so lovely to see Phil and Michelle. We spent the evening catching up, eating and drinking on the balcony. Happily the weather is behaving itself.

The calm before the social storm (sort of)
Thursday morning it was pouring when we woke up. After a great cycling week last week, this weeks been a bust 🙄 When the rain did finally stop the wind roared in and it blew a gale for the rest of the day. Thankfully the crappy weather should have passed before Phil and Michelle get here.
This morning we made up the room ready for our visitors, I did some admin and had a look at some of the excursions we might like to do on our Hurtigruten cruise in August.
Jose started to change over the washing line to the new one we bought only to find the holes are all in a different place 😬 Thankfully Stephen has a drill we can borrow and they even bought it over this evening.
The afternoon was spent organising our Airbnb listing and watching the Giro. Later when Katharine and Stephen bought over the drill, we braved the wind and headed out for a couple of drinks.
Friday morning the wind was still howling when we woke up. I guess at least it’s not raining. In the morning we went for coffee before Jose’s driving lesson and then I went on to do the grocery shopping.
Back home I did some admin until Jose returned. It looks like hopefully he’ll be doing his driving exam next Friday.
After lunch we watched the Giro and Jose installed the new washing line 🎉 Late in the afternoon we headed over to Fiona and Andrew’s. It was a funny evening, they were in part reciprocating for last Friday except they had popped into France and bought French cheeses and saucisson and Fiona made delicious pinwheels and spanakopita. A far cry from our nibbles bought almost entirely from Lidl. Katharine is in melt down for when it’s her turn.
It was a great evening and they have a lovely home up near the ruins, but a bit of a walk from town. Perfect for them and their children and grandchildren.

Trying to be summer 😏
Well the 1mm of rain forecast for Tuesday morning was completely wrong. The storm we had been watching hit us through the night and it rained into the morning. My plans for a ride went out the window and Jose faced the driving lesson to Girona in wet conditions.
By mid morning the rain had passed and it was beautiful and sunny again, honestly 🤷♀️
I spent the morning doing admin, organising packing and baking. By the time Jose returned I was very happy to head out for a coffee. Even though the sun had come out it was still a bit windy so we had lunch indoors.
The afternoon was spent watching the TT at the Giro and then working on our Airbnb listing. By the time we finished that I was happy to chill at home as I suspected it would be an early night after a late night last night.
Neither of us slept that well so we didn’t go for the swim we really should have as it was a beautiful morning. Instead we had calls home and got a few other things done until it was time for me to go to my Spanish group and Jose attend our Narrabeen AGM by phone (I know who drew the short straw 😉).
The AGM was still going when I got home after a trip to Carrefour post the Spanish group. When it finally wrapped out we headed out for a drink and to enjoy the sun. Unfortunately a cold breeze was picking up.
A late lunch before it was time to go out to see a potential storage opportunity. It’s actually exactly what we need and right next to Spar and one of our favourite bars 👍🏼
Home again we watched the end of the Giro and I did the washing up before we headed out for another drink and to pick up a couple of bits and pieces. It was then home for tv and nibbles and I suspect an early night, though Jose’s already had a nanna nap.
We should by now be getting ready to meet the Carlyles in Denia. So bummed we’re not but looking forward to seeing them hear at the end of the week.

Back to business as usual
Sunday morning was lovely. After coffee in bed and phone calls home we headed to the market before meeting Martijn and Marjolein for a swim. I won’t lie the water was chilly and Jose and I were wearing neoprene, but it was lovely to be back in the bay here at L’Escala 🐠🐟
After our swim we sat in the sun at EO and had a late breakfast. The weather at the moment is great and it was lovely to relax and chat with M&M.
We then headed home for by now lunch. The afternoon was spent watching a very exciting Giro but also getting a bit organised for our Northern trip later in the year. When we leave here in a few weeks our bags need to be Norway ready as we go straight from Sydney to Norway and then Iceland on our return in August.
Early evening we enjoyed a drink at the beach taking advantage of the good weather. We’re having really long days at the moment. At 8pm it feels like 6pm. We’re in for a very rude shock when we return to Oz.
Back home to for nibbles and tv.
Monday morning was beautiful. After Jose had an early morning call about Marquesas we headed out for a run.
Chores again today including looking for a new washing line. This made us reflect on the fact that we’ve owned our apartment here for 9 years so it’s not surprising things need replacing.
Late in the afternoon Jose headed out for his driving lesson while I got on with washing, admin, etc. Not long after Jose returned we headed over to the port to have dinner with Katharine and Stephen at their place. It was a lovely evening and we watched an electrical storm taking place towards France. Hopefully it won’t come this way 😬
