Joyful Voyager

Yes, I write fanfiction. Why? Because corporations now own our modern mythologies, and they're not especially interested in doing the things that mythologies are intended to do, like explore the big questions of life, death, love and loss. Some of them do cover that territory, of course. But in the pursuit of money, a lot of that important exploration gets left out. And that's where fanfic writers come in. Also, I only write fanfic for Star Trek: Voyager. And boy, did the last owners of that modern mythology leave out a lot of important stuff, or what? You can find my fanfic on AO3 as "lauawill" or ffn as "Laura W." I'll link things up here as well. Enjoy. Also, I take pictures. Lots and lots and lots of pictures. I'll try not to clutter up this page with too many of them, but sometimes I can't resist.

Silver lining: The cancer spread to my brain was caught very early by an MRI that was ordered kind of by accident. There’s a lot of cancer in there, but the spots are tiny and causing me zero neurological impairment whatsoever. My team has ordered 10 whole-brain radiation treatments. This is very aggressive, but they think most of the spots can be completely eliminated by the treatment. And the bigger lesion, which, again, is not yet causing problems, can be reduced significantly so it doesn’t start causing problems for a good long while.
I’m sad and scared, but feeling like being around for my daughter’s college graduation in December 2022 is not out of reach. That’s the date circled on my mental calendar right now. Make it to that date, and anything after that will be bonus time.
Keep putting positive thoughts into the universe, folks. Tell the people who mean something to you that you love them. Sing, dance, play, be creative. Choose kindness. Life is too short for anything else.
I’m not giving up yet.

Captain Chakotay: so you say there’s a malfunction in the Training Hologram? What’s the issue?
Engineer: Yeah…uh…it might be better if you just see it.
Hologram Janeway: *crushing Rok-tahk’s head into her bosom crying* THIS IS MY ROCK BABY AND I LOVE HER!
Captain Chakotay: Oh boy.
Engineer: What do we do?
Captain Chakotay: I’m the proud father of four children, six dogs and a hamster. There’s nothing you CAN do!
Rok-Tahk: *muffled* I can’t breathe!
Captain Chakotay: Just give her a couple more minutes, Kid! She’ll tucker out and let go!
Hologram Janeway: I’ll never let go of this precious being! Never!

only slightly incorrect quote from 5x03 Extreme Risk
Chakotay: B'Elanna, you can't just shut off your emotions
B'Elanna: The hell I can't. Besides, what do YOU do all day, old man?
Chakotay: I don't shut off my emotions. I stew in them. I stare at the captain all day and MARINATE in my feelings.

Really struggling this week with depression, pain management, and the reality that my cancer isn’t really responding to treatment anymore. I slept for just 3 hours last night, and even that was due to the sheer exhaustion of being wracked with pain for the 6 hours prior.
Is there anybody out there with a truly uplifting J/C story I haven’t read yet? I’m desperate for something to take my mind off everything.
Help.

Lost my father-in-law yesterday to a massive heart attack. That means my husband and I lost all 4 parents in the space of 5 years. It never rains, but it pours.

This is a lovely idea and I would love to see it play out this way! But if it doesn’t … I’d love to see you tackle it in a multi-chapter fic!
How much do you want to bet that in Prodigy, the kids/teens are pressing a bunch of buttons while trying to work out how to fly the thing, and they accidentally send some sort of signal/message to Starfleet? The Admiralty will then, of course, realise that they've not lost their ship and decide to send someone out to retrieve it (that someone being our newly announced Captain Chakotay).
Now, if I had any say in it (I don't, more's the pity), it would be none other than Admiral Janeway who lets our intrepid captain know his mission. She wishes him luck and requests that he makes sure he comes home (yes, at some point, we would see the flash of rings!).
Under the guise of more episodic storytelling, we would mostly follow our rag-tag group of Delta Quadrant natives. We would also get short clips of Chakotay and his team trying to track down these kids who are flying all over the place. Eventually, Chakotay catches up to them, but they freak out and flee. Chakotay has to video Kathryn and tell her that he's seen the ship but is yet to bring it back under Starfleet control and won't be home just yet.
The next time Chakotay catches up with Dal and his "crew", he manages to convince them to hear him out. The kids agree to bring the ship back to Federation space. They get into some adventures along the way, and they (particularly Dal) start to see Chakotay as a sort of father figure. (Of course, the focus is on the kids, so we mostly see things from their perspective).
In my mind, this is over like two seasons. The end of Season One would see Chakotay finally catch up with the wayward ship. And the end of Season Two would have something happen as they make their way back to Federation space that separates Chakotay (and his officers) from the kids. Obviously, Dal and his friends can't leave their new dad behind, so they go after them.
They try to contact Starfleet, and they end up getting hold of Kathryn because they had mimicked what Chakotay would do. They are surprised to see an older looking version of their beloved hologram. Kathryn has already started to fall in love with these kids from her conversations with Chakotay (even though this is the first time she's "met" them), and while she's worried about them and Chakotay, she wishes them luck, nonetheless.
Season Three would see the kids fighting to rescue Chakotay (who we see clips of him and his crew trying to get free of whatever has them) and then being reunited. They would finally get to Earth and meet the Admiral. There would be a reunion between Kathryn and Chakotay, and then Kathryn would extend that to the kids, and they would feel like they have an eclectic but awesome family.

Note to self: You haven’t written anything in a while. And you got to go camping this summer by the lake for the first time in three years. Does this prompt spark joy? Yes, it might.
