On Becoming a Digital Citizen
It isn’t uncommon for an individual to be in inclined towards the online world through technology in the current generation. As the pandemic hit, society has turned to the internet as a source of communication and information. Even before such, the online world has already been a prominent place for individuals to reside, only to be amplified sooner. The online community is often referred to as “Digital Citizens”, or popularly coined by others as “Netizens”. It isn’t a difficult task to open a Web Browser and create a social media account. Such is considered the mainstream and is often the main image portrayal of the internet, when mentioned. Plenty have found home in numerous social media sites, as they provided anonymity, and a haven for opinions to be shared with others. Social Media has been a primary factor that built several communities of individuals who shared interests and a window for self-expression. However, it is important to note that, behind every screen, a fellow digital native sits, and often reads what we post or say online. These platforms aren’t free from vulnerabilities and can be taken as advantageous for the selfish. Although moderators strive to take the necessary precautions, in order to raise awareness and mitigate rude behavior online, such may still thrive whether uncaught or through underhanded methods. Online responsibility is learned through being knowledgeable of the various aspects of media, especially when playing certain interactions with other individuals. Having the necessary consideration when taking part in online activities can contribute greatly to the composition of our statements, in order to maintain utmost respect towards others, especially if we do not agree with them. When composing a statement, may it be text to someone else or as a post, there are a few key points to remember, as to not come off as rude or insensitive. First, if we are stating a fact, with the intent of sharing information or to educate, stick to the plain fact. Explain it as it is. Avoid including opinionated statements and predicaments. A fact is a fact, maintaining its integrity without taking a side if important here. Second, if we are commenting on someone else’s work, be respectful. It may seem like a cliché statement, as we often see this written everywhere, especially on community policies such as the YouTube comment sections. If we liked a certain content, there is no problem in expressing our gratitude towards the content creator. If, it so happens that such doesn’t spark our interest, it’s best just to remain silent; don’t say anything at all. This saves us from getting attacked by the creator’s supporters, the creator from getting offended and ourselves from releasing negative energy. It’s often fine to criticize, but it is essential to include why we thought a certain part must be improved and we must show that we express that desire for improvement, not harassment. And finally, stick to the individuals that are positive. This, then again, may seem like another cliché thing to say, but it’s great to be around people who will support and understand; yes, this applies online. During these hard times, with the loss of face-to-face interaction, or simply caused by distance, the internet provides us with a bridge to close the gap with our loved ones. Not only is it great for our mental and emotional well-being, but it also helps to create a safe haven and a model for digital citizens. Technology always will come with vulnerabilities and exploits, which will often be taken advantage of by many, but being educated in the proper light and necessary etiquette when partaking in online endeavors can help in the mitigation of the worse side of the internet
