one of the things i’ve loved most about this experience is confirmation that thoughtful curiosity still lives. this sculpture was inspired by a light cone, and i’ve metaphorically linked the physics concept to the idea of information and influence spreading across time and space through 3 generations of afro-caribbean women (myself, my mother, my grandmother). the sculptural sound system serves as a physical representation of this interconnectedness, intuitive knowing and energy through sound waves. just as light conveys information in physics.

banging the drum - return to sound journal
modern western physics suggests that movement and rhythm are fundamental properties of matter. With this perspective, all matter, both on earth and in space, is engaged in a continuous cosmic dance. metaphorically, i view this dance as two people in orbit. quantum field theory proposes that each particle emits a rhythmic pattern of energy, often referred to as virtual particles, creating dense and subtle forms. in some cases, experimental scientific investigations have observed behaviors that seem inexplicable without the presence of some form of superluminal connection.
quantum theory has revealed that particles are not isolated entities but rather probability patterns interconnected within an inseparable cosmic web. the essence of matter lies in its activity, and the existence and activity of matter cannot be separated. in the subatomic world, particles are better understood as processes. as human beings, we are also composed of energy, manifested through atoms vibrating at various frequencies. we, too, are processes that come into existence through abstraction. it is not uncommon to observe connections between different processes. for the igede people, there is no strict distinction between music and dance. maybe our memories reside beneath the earth, underwater, or within drums.
in return to sound, two individuals are symbolized by planets, pluto and neptune, exhibiting orbital resonance. orbital resonance refers to the gravitational influence they exert on each other, affecting their respective orbits. the sphere of influence, represented by the sun, is the sound of a drum.
