Arts 102 Final Reflection
Now that the class is over I have realized that I have learned a lot. I came into class thinking it was focused more on photoshop since that is what I wanted to learn more about. However, I am leaving with not only more knowledge about photoshop but also in other programs. I never knew about indesign but now knowing something about it makes me want to create other things. Whether it is in photoshop, illustrator, Indesign, etc. The projects throughout the class have helped me be more creative and look at things in another perspective. Project two made us look at things differently in that aspect and to help tell a message. I was able to see different approaches to projects and see how other students went about it. Even learning about the app procreate. Which has made me look into that app even more. A lot of people say it’s good and have created wonderful art works with it and I want to give it a try. I am happy I chose this class as one of my last classes here at USC. It was fun. I want to learn more about designing and animation but my time is up here. So I have to find my way. Thank you.

For the past couple of weeks we had a few projects done. For one of them I went to the CMA and took a picture of the “Juicy Salif”. It is a manual juicer or as it is also called a citrus squeezer. I thought to myself this would be pretty simple to make and fun to try to recreate it into a mark or logo. It turned out ok but for some reason I feel as though it could have been way better. For the Syntax and semantics project I decided to use shoes that I was interested in. I did not realize until after I printed out the project that a few lines were not the same as the rest. It was too late sadly. I am currently working on the last project and still trying to figure out a design for the opening pages. I am hoping it won’t be too bland. While reading the word algorithmic thinking caught me off guard. It reminds me of math which I am bad at haha. But reading the description it made me think that most people if not everyone has to think of something before creating. In our mind there are so many options and that we choose the best one to fit the task. I love how the page layout for the undergraduate section in 19 is made. The definitions are really helpful.

For project 3 I made my marks from the movie “BeetleJuice” and chose BeetleJuice and the Maitlands. For the first mark I went with three beetles on a card to represent how many times they said his name in the movie. The colors are a little bright so I may change that. For the Maitlands I chose to stay with the house from the movie. I couldn't think of anything else during the process, a few ideas popped up after but it was too late. As for the reading I it is fascinating to read about professional designers input on having magazines digital. Such as “Vogue” I think that it could help other people who want to see or read it on their phones, since now digital media is becoming a huge thing. With that helping design apps and such could help more designers find more jobs. I do believe at some point newspapers and magazines will become obsolete though. So having it on phones can be a better way to get it out to the public and faster. There is one statement from Michel Chanaud with the question asking if there is a place for print in our digital world. I agree upon saying yes but as time goes on I think the time of print will become rare. In the far future.

For my two icons I am choosing to do them on Beetlejuice and the Maitlands. For beetlejuice I decided to use three beetles with a strip along the back with them placed on a card. The idea came to me when I first saw how he acted in the movie and his all around appearance. He reminds me of the joker which is why I thought of the joker card from a deck of cards and figured this could look pretty good. I am debating on changing it up a bit but not too sure as of yet. For my second icon I wanted to use the house that took place in the movie which was the maitlands house. I thought it would be pretty simple to just outline the house to make an icon out of it but it still needs some work. I am not sure if I want to try and make the house in between the two or just take the simple route and leave the house as is.

The piece that caught my eye during my time at the museum is The “Lost Scores” painting by Beatrice Riese. She was born in the Netherlands and lived from 1917 to 2004. She studied art in the 1930’s but had to escape in the 1940’s due to Germans invading Paris. Most of her work is abstract. From the description the painting has squares that have a tirt and whorl of abstract forms in them. She earned her living as a textile designer which helped her develop her abstract painting style. This painting was made in 1976, and is an oil on canvas piece. At first glance of her painting I thought in the square were legs. They all were just placed to try and make something unique and had to take a second look at it to truly see what it was. However that is not the case. I do like the design of it with the middle of the painting being lighter than the rest of the painting. I think that was her focus point on this piece, I could be wrong.
This painting is sort of an inspiration to my upcoming project. It has the same sort of concept of having something placed in the middle of a square, but in my case it is a card. While putting bugs or beetles in the middle of the card to show the representation of beetlejuice. It is sort of like a joker card since he is a trickster so that is how I came up with that idea.

For project two, it came out pretty well. I feel like I was able to capture the image pretty well and paste my quote on the well nicely. My only problem or problems with the wording is that it looks like it is just placed there and not part of the wall. One other thing is I feel like I could have made the quote a little bit bigger so viewers could see but other than that it turned out alright. For project three I am leaning on doing my logo on BeetleJuice. Right now out of sketches I like having him on a card like a joker hard with either his head and hair or maybe a beetle. I haven’t decided yet. If that does not work out I was thinking of having the Maitlands in frame and having the house they built in the middle.
During the readings I enjoyed reading the takes on how to come up with book cover designs and what some people look for in working with or hiring people. I do agree with people taking risks when designing. I would say it could make you stand out more if you take that risk. For newspapers I think they will always have a place for the older generation. People my age do not read the newspaper. Maybe they do but most I know of do not. But they will always have a place in this world as long as the reading is interesting.

My approach for my second project has been a back and forth of ideas in my head and trying to lay them out. I changed my quote to something else which I think is better than my original. I feel as though I can show my vision or my take on the quote. I used multiple boxes for the representation of the homeless in a sense. The boxes could be seen as a place for canned goods for food drives and clothing etc. I decided to take a few pictures of an old gas station that a few of them used for shelter during the time. Now no one uses it so I thought it would be a good idea to visit. While reading chapter 3 I like how the group or partnered designers work together. No one gave a negative answer on their partnership and it seems to be 50/50. Also the creative thinking on making a logo. I hear people wanting to make their own logo but just do not know how to and if I could be a graphic designer I could help.

Alright so the first few weeks of class were interesting. Photoshop is a program that I have not had much experience with or have used in depth in school. So I am going in blind for the most part. I like to learn new things especially in photoshop. I have wanted to learn more about the program for my own benefit in the future so taking this class could be helpful. I enjoyed our first project even though I made mine as simple as possible. I wanted to try to convey the image and quote into something simple in photoshop with little to no knowledge on how to use the program. Overall it turned out ok, but only ok in my eyes. I did learn how to make shadows and background gradients so that is a plus. I am hoping to make my art a little better than the last with each project. For the sketches for the next project I have done completely wrong. I apologize. I misinterpreted what we are doing and my next ones will try to represent what I want to do. I loved seeing the different answers and perspectives of each designer throughout the text. I liked Arnold Schwartzman's answers to his questions. How his thought process has never changed and that he includes himself with other work such as being an author, filmmaker, and animator.
