Austin King: ‘Young Urban Gardener’ Fights Hunger in Indiana
In a burgeoning Indianapolis community garden, a “Young Urban Gardener” is hard at work.
“I see a lot of people without food so I wanted to start that and you ‘aint gotta pay to grow anything on it,” says Austin King Hurt of the new growing space during a WTHR interview. Austin started this neighborhood garden and also runs the educational Young Urban Gardener YouTube channel, wherein he shares his exploration of and growing expertise in urban agriculture. Before Austin decided to start farming in his community, his mission to grow food started much closer to home – with making sure his family had enough to eat.

By: Julia Travers Songbirds may be nature's pop stars, but the females are still waiting for a turn in the spotlight -- we don't even know if females sing in about 70 percent of songbird species. This is because the study of birds has a gender gap: most previous research has focused on male song. Participants in the Female Bird Song Project are looking to right this imbalance. 'I think this is a very important project. It involves citizen science in gathering fundamental information about the behavioral diversity of birds,' says evolutionary ornithologist Richard Prum of Yale University. Researchers from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Leiden University call on birders to contribute videos, photos, sound clips and field notes of female bird songs so they can better understand the evolution and role of this expressive behavior. Their research already revealed that female birds have most likely been singing for tens of millions of years. To participate, citizen scientists use their

How to call your reps when you have social anxiety
When you struggle with your mental health on a daily basis, it can be hard to take action on the things that matter most to you. The mental barriers anxiety creates often appear insurmountable. But sometimes, when you really need to, you can break those barriers down. This week, with encouragement from some great people on the internet, I pushed against my anxiety and made some calls to members of our government. Here’s a comic about how you can do that, too. (Resources and transcript below.)

Motivational resources: There are a lot! Here are a few I really like:
Emily Ellsworth explains why calling is the most effective way to reach your congressperson.
Sharon Wong posted a great series of tweets that helped me manage my phone anxiety and make some calls.
Kelsey is tweeting pretty much daily with advice and reminders about calling representatives. I found this tweet an especially great reminder that calls aren’t nearly as big a deal as anxiety makes them out to be.
Informational resources: There are a lot of these, as well! These three are good places to start:
Find your representative at house.gov
Find your senators at senate.gov
Use the “We’re His Problem Now” scripts when calling (or write your own!)
