scully doesn’t take mulder’s name when they get married, but in an alternate season 9 where scully stays on the x files at least to train and acclimate doggett and reyes, she quietly changes her personal paperwork to read ‘dana mulder’ and makes every rude gossipy agent she and mulder have run into call her agent mulder during official investigations. she gets odd looks from doggett but reyes and skinner make the change immediately. skinner is surprised how effortless it is. when she runs into tom colton for the first time after everything, she takes great pleasure in allowing him to make a spooky joke: ‘where’s spooky, agent scully?’ ‘that’s agent mulder to you.’ if she had her way, she’d drag mulder into the lobby and stake her claim on him with their beautiful baby boy in a sling between them. every bitter secretary can eat their words about how there’s no way he’d ever do more than sleep with her on the side. she put a ring on that and she’s gonna leave this sorry, corrupt organization with a bang.
scully doesn’t take mulder’s name when they get married, but after iwtb, mulder takes every lunch break of scully’s as his own, striding into the hospital and asking where he can find dana scully. ‘oh are you mr. scully?’ the receptionist asks, blushing. there is no hesitation. ‘that’s right’ he says smugly, repeating the words when scully approaches, smiling at him in her own quiet, we’re-in-public way, letting him wrap an arm around her. at the annual fundraiser, he introduces himself as mr. scully to everyone who will listen, keeping his mouth on scully’s ear as he complains that everyone’s eyes are on her ass in that dress, and ‘c’mon scully, it’s not a lie. it might as well be my name’ ‘so what’ll i call you: fox?’ she says, thinking she has him. ‘oh scully,’ he says, low and suddenly serious, ‘that was a long time ago. don’t you know? you can call me whatever you’d like.’ and she stills calls him mulder, because that’s who he is to her, but just knowing he’d surrender that part of himself has her thinking maybe names mean both more and less than she’d ever thought.
