Learn to make 3D Type
Today, Jeff Rogers launched a new course over on Skillshare: Digital Lettering: Designing 3D Type and Texture.
It’s a subject close to my heart and I’m always interested in the techniques that other letterers use in creating their work. The class was just over an hour, so I pulled up chair and watched Jeff work his magic.
The course takes you through selecting appropriate fonts for the job, and then building the text up with colour, dimension and texture. Even though I’ve created several 3D lettering projects I still learnt several tip and tricks.
Jeff has a very easy manner and it was a very enjoyable 70 minutes. I noticed almost 400 students had already enrolled in the first 24 hrs. Take a look here.

An inventive 3D Typeface: Rig Shaded
I’m very excited to share my latest typeface. It was a long time in the making and pretty complicated in places but it’s ready to be unleashed.
Rig Shaded is a 3D type family with a geometric sans serif at its heart. As its name suggests, Rig is designed as a framework to support a range of striking 3D effects.
It has four versatile weights including a unique ‘zero’ weight. Each has two grades of distinctive halftone shading, Fine and Coarse, which emphasize Rig’s solid appearance.
Rig developed from my quest to find ideal letter shapes for a shaded typeface while retaining their geometric principles and legibility. Each character has been designed to ensure maximum clarity and harmony when combined with 3D effects. The extrude and shaded styles have been handcrafted to produce a consistent weight and tone.
Here’s how it looks in use:
Rig’s character set includes 230 glyphs, supporting 198 languages, including all Western, Central and South Eastern European languages.
It’s simple to create awesome headlines with any design software that uses layers. There’s more information on using Rig Shaded and how it was made in the specimen.
Rig Shaded is available at MyFonts.

Dutch artist Stefan Glerum has an illustration style that lends perfectly to stained glass, his latest venture. In his traditional artwork, we can see the influence of Art Deco and Japanese woodblock prints, with figures drawn in bold lines against vibrantly colored backgrounds with unusual angles of view. His simple and flat way of drawing is also reminiscent of Bauhaus, Italian Futurism and Russian Constructivism, which he credits as his inspiration. Glerum most recently applied his design sensibility to the Polderweg in Amsterdam, a housing complex of 72 apartments and impressive 60 foot cathedral-high stained glass windows.
