The history of tissue engineering.
This article was mainly written to express the author’s findings and perceptions about the history of tissue engineering from the various pieces of work he had taken time to read about, which notably has evolved consistently over the past few years. The earliest application of the phrase “Tissue Engineering” was in 1980 by the National Science Foundation, in production and development of prosthetic devices, by understanding the relationship between human tissue, and the prosthetics so that they could appropriately merge the two. Principles of tissue engineering were first applied in Boston, through designing new tissues using engineering principles, and biologic sciences.
The term was first recorded by “Surgical Technology International” in 1991 in an article entitled, “Functional Organ Replacement: The New Technology of Tissue Engineering”. In the 70’s many experiments were carried out at Children’s Hospital to generate new cartilage, using mice as a specimen. All these various studies were able to prove that it is able to generate new tissue by smartly by merging cells appropriately to their respective scaffolds. Later on in 1980, Dr. Joseph Vacanti approached Dr. Robert Langer of MIT with prior knowledge of ability of cells to be used for scaffolding, to come up with scaffolding for “cell delivery”, in contrast to the cell seeding performed much earlier. Further more, Dr. Joseph Vacanti using the idea of branching network of synthetic biocompatible, or biodegradable polymers configured as scaffolds seeded with appropriate cells, designed functional tissue equivalents. These early findings have led to the development of very many study centres, in Europe, and the United Sates, which include; Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative (PTEI) in Boston, Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering in Goergia tech laboratories, and a lot more places in Germany, Switzerland, and Southern France.
In 1994, a journal was designed, dedicated to the publication of new scientific study and research regarding the field of tissue engineering. Later on in the same year, The Tissue Engineering Society (TES) was formed by Drs. Charles A. and Joseph P. Vacanti in Boston. The body consisted of seven board members, and meetings were held in a biannual basis. In 1996 membership guidelines were defined, which were; physicians and researchers were to pay a fee of $40 while students were to pay only $15.The preceding meetings were international, as they brought on board other countries. Abstracts and presentations were submitted as a way of showcasing different approaches and perspectives regarding tissue engineering in the different countries that had shown interest. Though a few challenges had been noted, there was a general impression expressed by the public concerning the relevance of tissue engineering in the scientific field at that early time.

The True Cost of Diabetes
Kadima an Ethiopian mother of 5 travels 35km to  Jimma University Hospital every two months to collect her insulin. This has been going on for the past 13 years. Not only is it tiresome to access medication, but as well very costly for the average Ethiopian citizens.
Thanks to the continuous support by the  “THET (Tropical Health & Education Trust) Ethiopia NCD“ team. They have ensured that the residents get free insulin consistently delivered to them at all times. Countries such as Uganda require equally the same urgency, consistency, and collaboration from international partnerships. Non communicable diseases, are the biggest silent killer in Uganda today, especially since its effects are long term.
Lets all join efforts next month 12th February 2018 as we highlight all the issues underlying non communicable diseases in this country. The symposium is known as the Makerere NCD Symposium, under the theme; Building momentum to address the growing epidemic of Non Communicable Diseases in Africa.
The MakNCD Symposium is organized to achieve the goal of creating attention to the NCD epidemic among researchers, clinicians, funders, policy makers and general population that will result into a formidable multidisciplinary response to prevent/manage the epidemic in the East African region.
