Ernest Gideon Green
On this day in 1958, Ernest Green became the first black student to graduate from Little Rock Central High School. Green in addition to eight other black students were enrolled in a formerly all-white school, in response to the Supreme Court ruling that declared all segregated public schools unconstitutional. Guided by civil rights pioneer Daisy Bates the courageous teenagers were known as the Little Rock Nine and became the first black students to attend Little Rock High School.

Henry "Black Death" Johnson
Tumblr media
U.S. Army Sergeant Henry Lincoln Johnson was apart of the first African American unit in the U.S. Army to engage in combat during World War I. Johnson suffered 21 wounds and successfully rescued a soldier while fighting off an enemy raid in 1918, earning himself the nickname "Black Death" as a sign of respect for his expertise in combat. Upon returning home Johnson's outstanding bravery and service unfortunately went unacknowledged, being denied not only the Purple Heart, but disability benefits as well. Unlike the U.S. military who discriminated against black soldiers, the French Republic embraced them and Johnson became the first U.S. soldier to be awarded the Croix de guerre with 2 bronze palms and a bronze star. Johnson died destitute at the age of 32 in 1929. The battle to acknowledge and honor his achievements lasted more than 7 decades. Eventually in 1996 he was awarded the Purple Heart , the Distinguished Service Cross in 2002 and after much effort the Medal of Honor in 2015.

The Fight of the Century
Tumblr media
On March 8, 1971, after 3 years in forced retirement for refusing to fight in Vietnam, undefeated boxer Muhammad Ali stepped in the ring for a boxing match against undefeated champ Joe Frazier. This would be the first time two undefeated boxers would battle for the heavyweight title, the fight was highly anticipated and both boxers were to receive a payment of $2.5 million upon entering the ring, no matter the outcome. After a 15 round fight, Frazier unanimously received the title subsequently serving Ali his first professional loss in what boxing historians now refer to as "The Fight of the Century." Ali would later make a comeback in the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" match against George Foreman, reclaiming the heavyweight champion title for a second time.
