Final Project: The 9%
I have stuck with my project proposal from before and I can show you the various occasions of the 9%. This photo series was to show the the various events or experiences that happen on campus with black students so i could shed a light on them as this organization is effectively in the shadows to people who are not tuned into BSU (Black Student Union) and the CSO (Caribbean Students Organization. I've taken pictures from various events that they always host on Mondays (and on other days as well) so I was effectively on a time-limit, I started shooting around the start of November to the end, but I had to boil it down to 6-9 images so I went with the ones I thought we're best. The first 7 images were the progression of an event that was a food drive, you gave in canned food to get a meal yourself, about 40 people showed up and there was food like jerk chicken, macaroni, yams and cornbread, after all that it ended with musical chairs. The last 2 images were of one of an event in the style of family feud, and they also provided us with food here too. I hope I atleast put the spotlight onto a little part of the campus life. As I am writing this they are having a fashion show on December 7th and I will also probably be taking pictures of that as well.

Writing Prompt, 4th Photo
Image #4 perfectly displays this type of stillness and emptiness that Iris was going for. In image #4 it is a shot of an empty small classroom, but the inherent problem with this is that you expect to see people conversing about various topics, doing homework due the next day or finishing up a project that needs to be done in this room but it’s a ghost town, there's nobody there to make use of this room and that's inherently wrong, void and empty. It looks like it hasn’t been touched in quite some time, but the light is on..so it still should be in some use but there is no one here. Considering the fact that they wanted to capture the emotion of emptiness I think they were perfectly encapsulated. Looking at the individual objects in the photo we can see the shadows being casted by their chairs giving a sense of void/emptiness that I talked about earlier, the seats are all neat save for a few of them, the light overhead casts a light down into the drab room below, casting shadows everywhere, the shadows on the right of the photo also adds an extra layer of emptiness to the peace. The tile I also feels adds to this piece as well, I feel like if it was just a regular classroom tile panel that I wouldn’t even look at it much but since it has these designs its seemingly adding to it.

Light and Shadow Project
Project Title: The 9%
Project Description: This project, "The 9%" is a visual depiction of the Black/African American students on campus and the activities that they undertake in their day to day lives. Considering the community is seen as a minority compared to the abundance of other students I would shine a light on the experience of The 9%. Each photograph will detail an activity involving either someone else or a group of people either, entertaining themselves, living life or a portrait photo of them. In these photos I will be using a monochromatic OR color photography type shots like my references Dawoud Bey and Gordon Park (Fun Fact: Dawoud Bey is influenced by Gordon Park). With these types of photos I will use the use of light and shadow to accentuate certain key points or subjects you need to focus on in the photos. I'm still working the kinks out for this project, but thats what I want to do
Outcomes: - A series of 6-9 images showing the various different things that happen on campus involving or have Black/African American students -Photos, I'm thinking will be in a two different ways, Portrait and Landscape (Thinking of Aperture Priority AE)
Methods and Materials: -Canon Rebel EOS T7 camera -Tripod Lighting: -Natural Lighting -Maybe some artifical touchups on certain photos we'll see Materials: -Camera. Editing: Digital Photo Professional 4 (Canon) for adjustments to the photos
References Dawoud Bey: I like Dawoud Bey's photography because just something akin to my project, he shoots communities that have been underrepresented. He's style of photography is of portraits, some being of groups, they mostly comprised of black people in different communities or about the stories of a certain individual
Gordon Park: Gordon Park shot history when it happened, Black Panthers, Harlem Gang Leaders, March on Washington etc. Gordon park document American life and culture and the African American Experience (like my project diving into the activities of African Americans). His shoots are mostly portrait and some color to others

Influence: Ansel Adams I'm not going to lie, its hard to mimic Ansel Adams but I tried. I chose the photographer that I did because I liked the black and white monochromatic color scheme and also for the fact that how detailed and how sharp his pieces was. So I did exactly, or tried to do exactly as he did, deep dark images with detail to them. Since I do dorm on campus I would say my selection is limited but I made it work, considering Ansel Adams was an environmentalist I also went that route, taking pictures primarily of nature, around campus, I hope I gave the feeling that I wasn't near the school at all.

Days In Manhattan Midterm Project

Artist Statement: The title of my work is called Days In Manhattan where in it I would work towards my golden hour midterm project. I would go into Manhattan while Golden Hour was going on, this was taken over the process of two to three days where I'd wake up and go from my home in Brooklyn to Manhattan and walk around while the sun would go down and take any pictures that piqued my interest. My favorite part of the photo essay was how the light would cascaded or bounce off of different buildings or objects and that everything was given that distinct golden hour hue that it was known for. One thing that'd I definitely do better with this project is probably just simply have more time, but I think I did pretty good with what I was given. Also have more of an idea with what I wanted to shoot.

One photographer that I enjoy is Charles O'Rear because of the way he takes pictures of nature and the way he focuses on certain aspects of the photo. Like the windmill or tree or the golden insignia in the middle of the photo, They have a striking stature against the monochromatic like background. Also known for his photo for Microsoft XP background. Where he was driving to see his girlfriend when he passed by the Sonoma California hills and decided to take a picture of it.
