A Beginner’s Guide to SantaCon
Tumblr media
SantaCon is intense. It’s not for the average party-goer. You’re wasted by 3pm, you’re surrounded by rowdy Santas, and that space bubble that protected you popped the moment you left the cab.
Let me explain: SantaCon is an annual holiday inspired pub crawl that encourages attendees to do some pretty heavy day drinking and walk around Manhattan as publically intoxicated Santa Clauses. For those of you who need visual aids.
When my friend Laurel invited me to go this year, I was pumped. I heard about it the previous year but I didn’t know anyone adventurous enough to drag with me. I’m happy to report that I survived SantaCon. My first, and probably last one.
Preparations
I was lucky enough to go with a friend who gathered the group together, being her +1 was simple enough. We met in Brooklyn for brunch (all you can drink for 1.5 hours) and I got introduced to the gang. Pro-tip: Go to SantaCon with fun and entertaining people, like you! Pretty much all the fun I had during SantaCon was thanks to the fun group Laurel had put together. Costumes were ready; ugly christmas sweaters, light up necklaces, santa hats, and candy cane straws. No full Santa Costumes though. Pro-tip: There is a direct correlation between Santa Costume authenticity and buffoonery.
Festivities
After brunch, we split Ubers to East Village. And I was surrounded by a sea of red, maybe it was the alcohol or my tendency to get car sick but nothing can prepare you for the madness that is stepping into SantaCon. Santas were yelling SAAAANTAAA! to other Santas, Slutty Claus and Mr. Claus were kissing under NYC sidewalk trees, and Santas were piling up in lines to get into SantaCon sponsored bars. And it was 2pm. Hitting the first bar was tough, you had to fight Santa after Santa after Santa to make your way to the front. We moved bars after one drink then spent the majority of the day at the next bar, deciding to step back from the crowd and hit the bars post-Santa Attack.
Aftermath
We wrapped up at 7pm. We said our goodbyes! as random Santas started stealing Christmas trees from sidewalk vendors. Having to work the next morning, I was home and in bed by 8:30. Half the group continued on joining other straggler Santas on the west side. Pro-tip: Going home dawning Santa Claus costume on the Subway is pretty tame for NY standards.
Opinions: Overall, I had a successful night. I had a lot fun and met some pretty awesome new friends. It was great. Just a little to rowdy for me. I prefer my Santas jolly and calming.

Hey there! I’m Julie Ann Luna,
Tumblr media
I currently live in New York City and work as a model full-time. In my first year, I moved 6 times before settling in Brooklyn. Since then, I’ve worked 5 jobs, moved an additional 2 times, and have dealt with all the things that come with being a 20something living in NYC.
I started the NYC Survival Guide because after living in Manhattan for 2 years I found friends and strangers suddenly asking me, How’d you do it? As if over the last 24 crazy months I became an expert on all things NYC.
They would ask me questions about modeling scouts and photographers, apartment hunts and gyms, and how did you even make it this far without running out of cash!? And usually, via text.
My responses usually came in memo form; top tips, little tricks, and tidbits of wisdom that were passed down from other models and New Yorkers. And it made me happy! It gave me purpose and I didn’t mind spending the time to text them back. Eventually, the same questions kept popping up so I just copy and pasted my original answers until …lightbulb!
And The Model’s Survival Guide to New York City was  born.
I’m here because I want to spread what I’ve learned and do something that I’m passionate about. Everything I’m sharing with you has helped me get to where I am today and I think it can help you too! I’m on a journey to document the things that I find helpful and share the lessons I’ve learned to surviving in this city. And I wanna get you involved to!
Let me know when you get here! Tell me what you’ve learned. New York City isn’t that scary when you have friends to help you out. So share your tips and ask those questions! Let’s take on New York.
- Julie Ann
