spring term life drawings weeks 15 & 16

for week 15 we focused on drawing folds in clothing and fabric. i was not satisfied with my work in the lesson so i practiced some more folds using shots from the film rear window as reference.

week 16 was 40 minutes total of painting in acrylic, which i began by blocking out key shapes within the pose.

film research & development

over the break, we were informed that an opportunity to work with a local client became available through the charity Youth Realities, a grassroots organisation in Barnet that offers specialist support and creative opportunities for young victims of domestic violence and relationship abuse.

i began by looking at a previous live action film made for the charity itself as well as several examples of animated films made for charities that address various hardship faced by children and outlining the general structure of this type of film.

company portfolios of those like the moth collective and the like minded often use limited colour palettes and minimal character design for tone and anonymity, the designs being distinct enough to create empathy and some identification, but not too distinct that it is alienating to a general audience. sometimes, statistics accompany the film in order to emphasise the gravity of the addressed issue and how it weighs on a specific demographic.

there are many methods of portraying stories of trauma in short films like the ones above, and i found that this is usually done through first or third person voiceover/narration, poetry, and sometimes audio visual metaphors. whatever method i choose, i will have to give extra care and respect to the perspective of whoever is sharing their story with me, and that its message remains intact no matter what.

i had a difficult time getting the cycle right, as it still feels as if its walking on a treadmill. the tail i think is fine, but the head shape as well as the rear keeps changing too significantly which i will focus on fixing when i get around to doing a cleaner version of this.
