Happy Halloween! In honor of the season, let's talk about something a bit spooky - the clans' relationship with death, burials, and grieving.
We've talked some about the paint made of red clay that the clans use to decorate themselves for ceremonies. A funeral is one of the few times all members of a clan paint themselves.
When a family member dies, it is customary to add one of the aspects of their designs to yours. For example, when his sister died, Pebblestun added the sun she used to paint on herself to his designs. This is done during the preparations for the funeral ceremony.
Some cats will keep their funeral paints on as a sign of mourning, typically for a few days. Expectations around this differ - at least 2 days is expected of cats in Jumpclan when their parents or grandparents die, and a full week is expected in Sneezeclan when a leader dies. In the event that this grieving period hits a full moon, it is time for the healer to step in and counsel the cat who is mourning.
All three clans bury their dead near the Mother tree. It is an honorable place to be buried, allowing your body to join with those of the original clan who stayed behind during the great illness and feed the Mother tree. A parade of clanmates will carry the body - while ideally it would be all of the clan, this is not always possible. It is always, at minimum, the leader or deputy and the dead's direct family.
For situations where no body can be recovered, something associated with them is buried instead - their nest, a piece of their favorite prey, a tuft of fur, items they've collected, etc. In these cases, the leader stays overnight at the Mother Tree to commune with the ancestors and ensure their spirit reaches them.
The afterlife is endless rest - comfort, warmth, and sweet dreams. All ancestors can awaken by choice at any time. Their dreams often provide a vague awareness of events happening to the living, especially those close to them. The dead will sometimes awaken to share these dreams with their clan's designated Communicator before falling back asleep. However, many cats choose to remain awake in the comfort, warmth, and quiet of the afterlife, watching the clans with the Communicators, especially just after their death.

Smokepaw and Leafpaw - Jumpclan apprentices
Smoke and Leaf were two young kits that Jewels took care of from a young age. With their mother's milk dried up from starvation, Jewels had to be crafty to keep them alive. When Jewels escaped the twoleg's hoarding situation, he couldn't bring himself to leave the two. Because of this, both cats see Jewels as their father.
Smokepaw is confident and is thriving under Timberheart's mentorship. While she originally found her mentor's habits to be off-putting, she now sees her as a mom.
Leafpaw has always been a much quieter cat and the trauma of what he went through only made it worse. Riverjump took him under their wing in hopes of breaking his shell. Only time will tell if it works.

Orchidwhisker - A Jumpclan Warrior
A small trans she-cat, with warm, ruddy pointed fur, a speckled nose, and hazel eyes. Opalclaw's daughter, Lilytree's mate, and Cloudpaw's mentor. Considered abnormally small for Jumpclan, she is often mistaken by other clan cats as an apprentice. Cloudpaw is already larger than her at 8 moons.
She loves to swim, and finds herself jealous of Sneezeclan's access to water, but not of Sneezeclan's attitude. She has trouble imagining the kind of cat she would be if she grew up as a Sneezeclan cat, all lazy and far too open and trusting of strangers.
At 19 moons old, she is somewhat overwhelmed with being a parent and mentor so soon after becoming a warrior, but she's also incredibly proud. She loves her mate and their beautiful, strong kits, and feels fiercely protective over them in a way she never expected.

Rabbitlilac - A Jumpclan Warrior
A pale ginger short-furred she-cat. Flintshade’s littermate. 52 moons old. Aromantic.
The mother of Cloudpaw, Specklepaw, and Lowpaw through Sneezeclan's Needlefall. Rabbitlilac wanted kits but wasn't interested in a mate; Needlefall had a good bloodline in Sneezeclan, was friendly to Rabbitlilac, and already had a mate so felt to Rabbitlilac like a safe cat - aka one who wouldn't catch feelings.
Do not mention her apparent resemblance to Pebblestun’s dead sister unless you want your muzzle clawed. She’s tired of people being weird about it, especially Stunclan cats who apparently still don't know any better. She was raised by her mother and her clan, and that's the only bloodline that matters to her - not her loner father who was apparently sleeping around with every queen he met.
Like many cats in Jumpclan, Rabbitlilac feels like she always has something to prove. She sticks to her goals fiercely and refuses to let anyone or anything get in her way.
