in the scene where xl and hc talk by the campfire, the mandarin phrase they used has added layers of meaning referencing Buddhist/Hindu beliefs about karma.
xie lian: “那位金枝玉叶的贵人,真是几世修来的福缘啊。”
hua cheng: “我能遇上他,才是我几世修来的。”
“几世修来的福缘” means something like ”good fortune cultivated through several lifetimes”. unlike the western concept of luck, which is usually thought of in terms of lucky things simply happening to you by pure random chance, and passively without you having to do anything, Buddhists and Hindus believe in the concept of karma, where if you spend your life doing many good deeds, working hard to be a good person, you can earn enough good karma to reincarnate into a better life with better fortune and less hardships.
so here xie lian is basically saying to hua cheng, your beloved truly must have been blessed with good fortune cultivated over several lifetimes, to be loved by you. and hua cheng is correcting him, that i was even able to meet you, i’m the one who has cultivated several lifetimes of good fortune.
they may each think the other is talking about someone else, but both of them are thinking the same thing: to meet or be loved by you is several lifetimes’ worth of good fortune.
