Nick Valentine adopting Synth Shaun Headcanons

First of all, he knows the boy is a synth. He knows. You don't have to hide it, explain it, or anything. He's content with being like this, content to be a guiding force for the boy that will never age.

When he first meets S9-23 (We'll just call him S!Shaun from here on out to establish things), he's astonished by how real he looks. Sure, he's run into gen 3 synths but never a child synth. Adoration is a word that describes it best, he loves the little shit.

The first time they talk is the same no matter the faction you choose, Nick is fixing up his hand and silently cursing as it curls in on itself. He's making notes to find some oil until Shaun approaches with a used oil can he found.

The boy gently opens the can and pours it onto the joints, helping the older synth uncurl his hand and hold it open as he does his work on himself. They talk about things; you, the faction you joined, life. Just small talk.

Nicky loves the boy, he buys him what he can from Diamond city to make things lighter on you. He buys him stuffed animals when he can find them, gadgets when he wants them, and even clothes when he can find something in the boy's style.

He once saw S!Shaun fall and scrape his knees and hands, the boy looked shocked when the synthetic skin tore and showed the metal interworkings to the world, Nick gently picked him up. He carried him inside the truck stop and sat him down on the service counter, gently working to melt the skin back together in a seamless way. While it's not seamless, it looks like human scars, it fits.

On nights that you and him are either at Sanctuary or the truck stop, Nick will tell stories to S!Shaun about his job as a detective.

Nearly cries (Can gen 2 synths cry?) when S!Shaun tells him he wants to be like him. Doesn't have the heart to tell him he'll never grow up.

After S!Shaun goes to bed for the night in your old house now a home, Nicky whispers about wanting to adopt him so should you die, he'll have family.

Abnormally great father, like lives for fatherhood great, on par with MacCready if you will. He's taught S!Shaun to shoot a gun, how to tell if someone is lying, how to hack a terminal, and how to cook despite not needing to eat.

Once allowed S!Shaun to play games on the personal terminal in your house just to beat your high score. It wasn't because you and him fought or anything, he just wanted to give you a challenge.

After 2 years of taking care of S!Shaun, S!Shaun slips up and calls Nick Dad when you're both tucking him in. You had to stay up with the hard boiled detective as his hardware nearly short circutted from pure joy.

Great dad, great partner, amazing shit. 10/10, would dad again.
