notes: i started this in my drafts well over three months ago and all it said was “this ain’t gonna be on time for hobi’s bday i can feel it” and damn if past!me wasn’t right on the money!!! this has undergone three edits, going from 14.6k to 16.4k somehow, and i am going to lose my whole damn mind if i don’t just post it so here it is! hope you enjoy!

You can smell it in the air and feel the damp chill against your skin, permeating through every layer of your clothing. The surrounding forest and all its occupants seem to be collectively holding their breath, waiting for the first drops to come. Even your footsteps, soft as they are against the loamy earth, sound much too loud in the hush that’s fallen. Dark clouds gather overhead, looming like an omen, and you silently reach into your purse to check that the umbrella you’d stowed this morning is still there. Vaguely, you wonder if it’s big enough for two.

notes: so i’ve been stupidly busy this weekend but i promised myself i would get this damn fic out before february 18 is over in my timezone even if i fucking died trying so. here it is. [sidenote: i still can’t believe it didn’t occur to me to write a birthday fic for hobi until literally ten days before. i’ll be more on top of things for yoongi’s birthday. hopefully.]

but anyway. happiest of birthdays to our sun, jung hoseok! this is so fucking soft and a little angsty and honestly i just love hoseok? so much? he deserves the whole damn universe. 

You are twenty-three when color finally begins to seep into the monotonous gray of your world. Brown becomes the first shade you see, rich and dark and alluring. 

At first glance, the sight doesn’t register—the blistering heat of the paper cup in your hand distracts you from the way color floods the coffee within, trickling across the circular expanse. And then you think that maybe it’s a trick of the light, or some kind of hallucination. Maybe you’re having a stroke. 

In the next second, you are gasping, your coffee cup falling to the ground and spilling everywhere. But you can’t be bothered with the wet mess or the grumbling people queued behind you in the café, because you can only stare at the young man behind the counter, his twinkling eyes the same warm shade of brown as the puddle of coffee on the floor. He is looking at you in dazed amazement, as if he can’t quite believe that you’re real. But when you remain rooted firmly in place, a dazzling smile spreads across his face. “It’s you,” he breathes, his tone bordering on reverent. 

Your gaze flickers down to the badge pinned to his chest, taking in the loops and curves that make up his name. “Hoseok,” you murmur, tongue curling around each syllable. “Hoseok.”

The world is small when you’re a child. At the ripe young age of eight, your entire world stretches not far beyond the little grassy yard in front of your house and your favorite swing on the school playground, and the most important problem you’re currently facing is whether or not you will be sitting with your best friend during lunchtime on Monday. With the way Namjoon is so blatantly skipping out on your scheduled playdate today, you’re pretty sure that leaving him to sit by himself for the next week would be entirely justified on your part. Maybe even the next month, if you decide you’re feeling particularly vengeful.

Pouting, you open the front door and gaze longingly at the sidewalk leading up to your house. It’s approaching three-thirty by this point, and there’s still absolutely no sign of your best friend. Hopefully, you peer down both sides of the street, craning your head to see if you can spot Namjoon’s dark head of hair bobbing your way. He only lives two blocks away, after all. But the sidewalks are empty, and he is nowhere to be found.

Stupid Namjoon, you think to yourself. There’s no way he’s going to have the pleasure of your company at lunchtime now. No way.
