Week 10 – Presentation & Critique, Writing Initiative #6
Class presentations of the 4th selected and remaining assignment, discussion, group critique; work class.
Writing Initiative #6
Which piece did you present to the class today? How does it relate to the other pieces previously presented?
: Today, I did not formally present my Reflective Piece, as it is still in progress. I originally planned to present it as a written reflection, but during our group critique, the professor mentioned that it doesn’t have to be a written text—it could be something visual or experimental, like my previous works. That suggestion inspired me to begin ideating a new visual form of the reflection, something that builds on the structure and themes of my earlier projects. Like my 2D, 3D, and 4D pieces, the final version of this reflective work will also explore Zygon—this time through a visual mapping of thought, process, and connection.
2. Describe 2–3 specific strengths your classmates found in your work and their reasons for identifying them.
: one of the peers in my group noted that trying to visually connect ideas across projects matched the conceptual theme of Zygon very well. Also a few appreciated that my overall body of work had a narrative flow, and thought the reflective piece could continue that storytelling approach.
Describe 1–2 specific ways your classmates thought you could improve this work going forward.
: One suggestion was to find a unique structure or material for the visual reflection, so that it doesn’t feel too similar to previous works.
Finally, you have now had a chance to present each of your projects (2D, 3D, 4D, Reflective) in process to the class. Produce an image of each one and describe how an aspect of your word is manifested in each piece.
: A visual archive structured as a timeline or conceptual map, composed of screenshots from past works, idea sketches, and short written reflections. In the background, there is a dynamic visual field where countless small particles are linked by lines, attempting to form a large sphere—but the shape continuously stretches, collapses, and reorganizes. This piece was built using TouchDesigner, allowing for generative visuals and motion-based behavior that reflect the instability and complexity of the process.
How Zygon is Manifested
:This piece visualizes how all previous works have been conceptually and temporally connected through experimentation, feedback, and reflection. Rather than viewing Zygon as the connection between final outcomes, I wanted to express it as the connection between thoughts, attempts, and the evolving process itself.
The particles represent the fragmented ideas, trials, and moments of progress I made throughout the project. Each is connected by fine lines, symbolizing the hidden but real relationships between creative decisions and reflections.
These particles are not static—they collide, stretch, and resist forming a perfect sphere. I chose the sphere to represent the ideal conceptual resolution I was reaching for throughout this project. However, the fact that the sphere continually deforms illustrates the imperfection and tension within the process: the moments where my efforts and outcomes didn’t perfectly align.
Still, the visual expresses that even in this constant flux, connection remains—and this, to me, is the deeper meaning of Zygon: a never-finished but persistent pursuit of unity, through layers of thought, struggle, and synthesis.

Week 8 – Presentation & Critique, Writing Initiative #5
Class presentations of 3rd selected assignment, discussion, group critique; work class.
Writing Initiative #5
Which piece did you present to the class today? How does it relate to the other pieces previously presented?
: Today, I presented my 3D piece, which builds on the concepts I explored in my previous 2D and 4D works. In both of those, I investigated the theme of “zygon”—meaning connection—through nature, data, and sensory experience. While the 2D poster visually layered natural imagery and structured data, and the 4D piece introduced audio interaction to explore sensory fusion, this 3D piece translates those ideas into a physical, spatial form. Using transparent materials and overlapping printed visuals, I aimed to represent the same idea of connection through visual layering and depth.
2. Describe 2–3 specific strengths your classmates found in your work and their reasons for identifying them.
: Several classmates appreciated how I translated a digital and abstract idea into a tangible, physical object. They said the materiality of the piece helped clarify the conceptual message. Also One person mentioned that there was a strong balance between conceptual depth and formal composition, which made the piece feel thoughtful as well as visually engaging.
Describe 1–2 specific ways your classmates thought you could improve this work going forward.
: Some classmates mentioned that if the piece were displayed in a larger, more open space, the visual impact could be significantly amplified. Because of its transparency and layered construction, they felt that the depth and visual shifts would become more dynamic depending on lighting and viewer distance, making the experience more immersive. Another suggestion was to create a stronger link between the 3D piece and the 4D audio-interactive work. For example, integrating sound-reactive elements, like subtle lighting or synchronized visual rhythm, could help bridge the gap between the pieces and emphasize the idea of sensory connection.
Consider the remaining outcome you still need to present in the remaining classes; why have you put this one off to the last?
: The only piece I haven’t presented yet is the Reflective Piece. I chose to leave this for last because I felt that real reflection could only happen after going through the full cycle of making, revising, receiving feedback, and growing through the process. I’m currently developing a visual reflection map that includes both imagery and short written insights. This final piece is meant to archive not just what I created, but how I thought, experimented, and evolved across each phase of the project—and ultimately, how I interpreted the meaning of zygon through different forms and materials.z

Week 6 – Presentation & Critique, Writing Initiative #4
Class presentations of 2nd selected assignment, discussion, group critique; work class.
Several classmates mentioned that the meaning of the word “zygon” was clearly communicated through my visuals. They noted that the blend of natural imagery with structured, data-inspired graphics effectively illustrated the connection between nature and digital systems.
Many appreciated the minimalist typography and layout, saying it allowed the visuals to breathe and gave space for interpretation. One classmate said the design felt like a real exhibition poster.
A few classmates commented on the balance between organic and synthetic textures, noting that it reflected the concept of “fusion” or “joining,” which aligns with the meaning of zygon.
Writing Initiative #4
Describe 2–3 specific strengths your classmates found in your work and their reasons for identifying them:
: This critique helped me realize that conceptual clarity and accessibility are just as important as visual strength.
2. Describe 1–2 specific ways your classmates thought you might refine or improve your piece going forward.
:Some suggested that the purpose of the exhibition wasn’t immediately clear just by looking at the poster. They recommended adding a short description or subtitle to help viewers quickly understand what the show is about.
3. How might this feedback inform your thinking/making going forward? Describe 2–3 specific ways your classmates have informed how you might continue with one of the other assignments (3D, 4D, Reflective Piece) through Reading Week and to be presented next.
:For my 4D work, I initially planned to make it motion-interactive, but during group critique, someone suggested exploring zygon’s musical context instead. This made me shift directions and consider how, in music, zygon can refer to different sounds joining together in harmony. Based on this idea, I began creating an audio-interactive piece, where visuals respond to sound as a way to explore sensory connection. Moving forward, I plan to make the interaction more understandable, possibly by adding visual cues or a more structured sound-feedback system so the audience can intuitively engage with the piece.

Week 5 – Work Class, Discussions, Writing Initiative #3
Work class, discussions
Thinking ahead to the 2D due date on the 16th of February, I encourage you to join me at 1pm during today's class to check out Copy & Print Services for a list of what they offer. The Riso Studio here on the 6th floor is also worth a trip. Please speak to Jenn. It might help you find a way to execute your 2D outcome.
Writing Initiative #3
Make a list of items you’d like to discuss with the group, possibly including:
Deliverable I'm Focusing on for Next Week: I’m currently focusing on 4D rather than the Reflective Piece. I'm working on a visual process map that traces how I transformed nature photography into data visualizations using TouchDesigner. This piece is meant to clearly and honestly show my experiments, challenges, and evolving thoughts about my chosen word, Zygon—which means connection.
Materials and Media Labs I’d Like to Explore:
I’m also interested in the AV Loans and Digital Futures Lab, especially if I expand my 4D work into a more immersive or interactive sound-based experience.
Successes and Failures:
Success: I was able to build a TouchDesigner network that reacts to audio input and visualizes the textures of nature through motion and layering.
Failure: I had some technical problems, like the recorded visuals playing at double speed and audio not being captured in the Movie File Out. But through these issues, I learned more about how digital systems interpret time and interaction.
The Most Challenging Assignment: I’ve found the 3D assignment to be the most difficult so far. I experimented with two or three different demo ideas, but it has been challenging to express the concept of connection through a physical 3D form that still relates to digital media. I didn’t want to create something purely sculptural—I wanted it to embody the idea of conceptual and sensory layering. Right now, I’m considering using transparent materials or layered printed visuals to reflect visual and physical forms of “connection.”
As a result, my progress on the 4D assignment has been delayed.

Week 4 – Presentation & Critique, Writing Initiative #2
Work class; discussions
Writing Initiative #2
Consider what you have learned from the process of critique.
Describe 2–3 specific strengths and weaknesses your classmates found in your work and their reasons for identifying them.
: For this week, I presented an experimental digital media piece created in TouchDesigner, featuring moving, cell-like structures based on Voronoi diagrams. Several classmates noted that the organic rhythm and flow of the visual was engaging. The way the cells moved across the screen gave a sense of life and continuous motion, which made the piece feel immersive and alive.
The most common critique was that the concept was unclear. Although the visuals were strong, many felt that they couldn’t see a clear connection to my chosen word, Zygon, which relates to “connection” or “joining.”
A few classmates mentioned that the work felt more like a visual experiment than a concept-driven piece, and that it wasn’t clear why the visuals were structured that way or what they were trying to communicate.
2. How might this feedback inform your thinking/making going forward? Describe 1–2 specific ways your classmates have informed how you might begin to tackle one of the other assignments (3D, 4D, Reflective Piece).
: This critique helped me realize that interesting visuals alone aren’t enough—I needed to deeply consider why I was making this and how it related to the core of Zygon. After this, I began a new round of concept ideation, reinterpreting Zygon through the lens of connection between nature, digital systems, and sensory interaction.
