To everyone who says 'finally, it's been damn time' and 'she should've done it sooner' about Alex Morgan's retirement:
You have no idea how privileged you are to see her play and follow her career. She took it upon herself to be the face of football then used her platform and influence to make the sport better. And was constantly criticised and attacked for it.
And while people love to judge players solely based on their last years, let's not forget, she was a damn good footballer.

Alex Morgan, you'll always be a motherfucking legend, this game wouldn't be where it is now without you. Some people really don't realize how much she's done for football.

You'll always be my favorite token straight, white girl no matter what

These extra times are starting to become ridiculous. There was absolutely no need for a 10 minute injury time. I get that people love last minute drama, but that's not how a sport should work.
Yeah, the tension is exciting but this is also how you get unnecessary injuries and it's also unfair.

My 2 favorite groups of people are:
Arsenal fans who solely root against the US because of Emma Hayes

yeah that's more what i meant, horan just doesn't feel like a solid leader personality to me. and as far as changing captains, when a new coach comes in that's a reasonable time to do it imo - but i agree there aren't a ton of viable options. naeher wouldn't be a bad shout, but i definitely agree that there doesn't seem to be anyone really stepping up into that leader role regardless of title. winning is still winning tho so i guess we'll see how they keep progressing.
Oh yeah, I totally agree with that. I was surprised that Hayes didn't change captains when she started. But at the same time, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Maybe they have a good reason to stick with Horan, or maybe she really is just the least bad option.
And you're also right about having to wait and see. Hayes is just getting started; she still needs time to adjust to the team.
Regardless, they have insane talent and standout players, so even with issues, I think they can get close to their previous dominant level.

i'm honestly not sure why horan is captain. i personally find her overrated as a player so i'm obviously biased, but i also don't think she's played particularly well lately and her personality doesn't read 'captain' to me, especially when you've got players like sonnett and dunn.
Yeah, I see where you're coming from. She hasn't been playing well. I don't know if it's personal or if she's not feeling this team dynamic, but she's definitely not showing her best. I don't think that's a reason to take away her captaincy, though. Every player has ups and downs, and being captain doesn't necessarily mean being the best player.
Personally, I do like her quite a lot as a player; I just don't think she's really captain material. But then again, who would be a better choice? She has experience, she's been an important player for both club and country, and she knows how to win. My biggest issue is her personality and character; for me, she doesn't stand for anything.
But I feel the same way about Sonnett and Dunn. I rate them a lot; they're great players, but I don't see them bringing more to the team from a leadership point of view. If I had to choose, I'd probably nominate Naeher. But all this is just a personal opinion.

While I totally understand why Alex Morgan wasn't included in the Olympics squad, especially knowing Emma Hayes, this tournaments shows one thing perfectly: the USA is really missing a leader figure.
Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, Becky Sauerbrunn, and, whether you like her or not, Carli Lloyd, were all incredible players, great captains, and leaders on and off the pitch. They all had strong characters that are missing heavily from this team.
That's why I think Morgan should've been in the squad, even if she didn't get many minutes. She's got that mentality, that authority, that ability to motivate, unite the team and create that togetherness.
I just don't see anyone in this US team right now who could take on this role.
