theory: the dream smp is just homestuck 2
my qualifications: been studying the dream smp and its fandom for a while, I know people who are into homestuck and have observed the homestuck fandom from afar
my evidence:
incredibly inaccessible to new viewers
the lore is so fucking confusing
the fanart is so much cooler looking than the source material
weird storytelling format thats very difficult to explain to people
updated very regularly, with a hyperactive fandom
weird internet storytelling that cant really be separated cleanly from its fandom
really truly could only exist in this exact moment in internet history, the same way homestuck could not have existed in any moment besides the one it was in
I dont homestuck but everyone I know who does acts like knowledge of it is this cursed thing they cant unsee that appears everywhere from then on, and thats exactly how I feel about the dsmp
seriously its everywhere
its fucking everywhere. its inescapable. I regularly see people I know who do not know or care about minecraft youtubers reblog content that I recognize as dsmp related. I see you, technoblade urls in unrelated threads. I see you, offhand references to mcyt things in otherwise non-fandom posts. I perceive you
“I definitely cannot explain ANY part of the plot in a coherent way, but this is my favourite character and I’ll tell you why”
knowing about it makes you feel like you’re going insane, and seeing other people who know about it will either provoke “COMRADE” or “oh dear god don’t perceive me” and no in between
feel free to add with more thoughts

how many times do Tommy and Phil have to confirm that their characters on the dsmp aren't family before you guys stop being pushy about it. it's one thing to have an au or something, but it's something else to hc something that would alter a ton of the plot and then analyse the content as though that's canon.

oh wait hang I've just had 12 concurrent thoughts that make it make sense. I'm going to write an essay about how age interacts with characterization on the dream SMP
I think c!awesamdude saying "these children are under my protection" the other day was the first canonical instance of c!Tommy and c!Tubbo being called kids (in any context outside of making fun of Tommy for being a Child™)
stuck out as weird to me since age basically doesn't exist in this universe (c!Tubbo and c!Tommy have both held high political positions, c!Wilbur is c!Fundy's dad despite being only like three years older or something, etc)

thinking about how many plotholes are being made from c!Sam and c!Puffy canonly acknowledging that c!Tommy is Just A Child in such a serious context.
before, everyone was kind of ambiguously aged, like fairytale characters. now we have vague but Morally Relevant ages in the form of "child" and "not child."
"Child" doesn't exist as a legal status in this universe. or if it does, the range is younger than c!Tommy and c!Tubbo. (and the only evidence that it does is by c!Fundy and the adoption fiasco, so,,, that would make c!Fundy canonically younger than c!Tommy, who needs no legal guardian and was able to hold a position in government. was the Fundy and Dream marriage thing canon??? I'm just gonna abandon this rabbit hole, there is no part of Fundy lore that isn't fucking cursed)
ANYWAY, point is, c!Tommy and c!Tubbo are legally adults in-universe, and generally speaking, legal adulthood aligns with a society's concept of adulthood morally. if a 16 year old is an independent adult capable of holding positions of power, (for instance, a teenage king in medieval times) they're not going to get the That's An Innocent Child treatment. (for instance, the way people in the middle ages viewed teenagers) (in short, they were literally considered Adults in every way)
but what we see here is a SPLIT. and it's not really even plot writing consistency, Sam Nook is calling them children AND helping c!Tommy with his business enterprise. why can the child start a business. why is the former general, brief president and terrorist morally a traumatized child. why is c!Tubbo both a Innocent Child and a corrupt president who tried to publicly execute a man without trial
splitting the concept of age like this MAKES NO SENSE because it's not grounded in any version of reality. because it doesn't exist in real life, there's really no,,,, meaningful way of analyzing it and the power dynamics it makes. "what if the world were made of pudding."
in conclusion, all this is actually par for the course if you've ever watched Shounen anime. that's a lot of teenagers running around and beating each other up without adult supervision. you don't notice it while you're watching unless you're very aware of ages at all times. which y'know. people in this fandom are. bc they don't want to be creepy
I didn't even have a point with this. I just. I like literary analysis and this arc has begun the Long Running Shounen Descent Into Retconned-In Plotholes
