You know what Artemis Fowl doesn’t get enough credit for? Seamlessly blending fantasy and science fiction without one eating the other alive.
Most media picks a lane. You’re either in a world of dragons and spells, or you’re riding a spaceship powered by neon blue lights. And when stories do try to blend both, it usually comes off like one genre is just cosplaying as the other. “Oh, it’s not magic, it’s just tech so advanced it looks like magic.” Cool. Sure. But that’s not a blend. That’s sci-fi wearing a glittery hat and calling itself a wizard.
But Artemis Fowl? Artemis Fowl gave us elves flying with mechanical wings, centaurs programming surveillance satellites, and also dwarves unhinging their jaws and eating through solid rock. It didn’t strip the fantasy creatures of their mythic weirdness to make them technologically advanced, and it didn’t simplify the tech to keep the magic pure.
And what makes it work is that both sides of the worldbuilding—the magic and the machinery—are treated with equal weight, equal logic, and equal absurdity. There’s internal consistency. There are rules. There's friction. The LEP doesn’t just use magic to solve every problem—they rely on tactics, training, strategy, and yes, a whole lot of gadgets.
The fantasy elements don’t feel like a storytelling shortcut, and the science doesn’t feel like cold technobabble.

Back to season 1 of Miraculous Ladybug
It's the 10th anniversary! Having been here for an entire decade, I thought I'd reminisce about what the early days of ML were actually like, for fun and nostalgia and a love letter to a show that's brought me so much joy over the years.
There was no English dub for the first few months. Your choices were either French or Korean. (It started airing first in Korean, then the French episodes caught up and went ahead.)
We didn't know who Hawk Moth was yet. The main and obvious suspect was Gabriel Agreste, but some people also thought it was Alix's dad, and that his moustache was fake.
The showrunner Thomas Astruc's twitter nickname was "Hawkdaddy".
He described Dark Cupid as "the episode that would break the internet". (probably because of the Ladynoir kiss)
In the episode Gamer, Adrien kept trying in vain to eat snacks and getting them taken away from him. A movement started called "Let Adrien Eat" in response, wishing for our sunshine son to be able to eat to his heart's content. Even the official Miraculous tumblr (yes that was a thing for a while) got in on it.
It seemed like a larger proportion of the ship names were based off wordplay rather than character names at the time. The main one that's survived to this day is DJwifi (Alya x Nino), but I remember that heartrate (Alix x Kim) and tomatofox (Nathaniel x Lila) were common too. I even remember occasionally seeing bubblegoth for Rose x Juleka and speedgamer for Kim x Max.
Nathaniel was popular. Like, REALLY popular. He was also frequently referred to as a tomato, and we thought his name was spelt like "Nathanaël" like one of the people who works on the show.
The episode Jackady/Simon Says was like a nuke dropping. I can't describe it. It was the first really intense episode of the show, before plot-heavy episodes became more commonplace in later seasons.
Before Lila's first appearance, all we knew was that the fox hero "Volpina" would show up, and we had a picture of her. People thought she would be more of a big sister, friendly type. Then the episode dropped and she was incredibly divisive for obvious reasons.
The Origins two-parter was supposed to air at the end of the season, but in true Miraculous fashion, it got aired early. Some people decided not to watch it yet and there were special tags created for avoiding origins spoilers.
There was a lot of hype over seeing what all the classmates were going to be when akumatised. We were counting down and crossing each one off as it happened. Nino was the first (Bubbler), and Rose was the last (Princess Fragrance).
On the day Princess Fragrance aired, there was a problem with the TV channel's website and it didn't get uploaded until later than usual, meaning that for several hours, only the people who had watched it live knew what happened. The rest of us got akumatised while waiting.
We didn't know most of the classmates' surnames yet. It was particularly noticeable with Nino, who is otherwise a major character.
Marinette stealing phones was a meme. So was Prince Ali with the bowl on his head. And umbrellas in general.
The anime PV was still very popular, with "Brigette" (fan nickname for PV Marinette) and Felix. We were told that Felix wasn't going to become a character in the actual show, and well, that was a lie.
Ladynoir, Adrienette and Marichat all had prominent episodes early on, and there was a Ladrien prayer circle until Jackady finally aired and saved us.
Happy 10th birthday, Miraculous. It's been a blast 🐞🐈⬛
#I was in the fandom since very close to the start (watched the french and spanish dubs)#And until before s3 i think?#all thats been said is so so true#Crazy to me this is still and ongoing show#ML

When you are posting on tumblr, do not add your commentary to the text of the post, in case others disagree with you and the original poster may come and say to you, "Make your own post," and then you will be in disgrace. But when you post, add your commentary to the tags, so that when the original poster sees them, they may say to you, ‘Friend, do not hide this in the tags'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who blog with you.

“God poured me out like milk and curdled me like cheese” sounds like a post you’d find on tumblr dot com, but it is in fact Job 10:10

With all the polls I've seen about interfaith relationships, I'm curious.
If there's more than one reason, choose your primary one.

A good rule of thumb whenever a non-fiction author has "Dr." or "Phd" next to their name on the cover is to check if:
Their doctorate is real and from an accredited institution
Their doctorate is relevant to the subject matter of the book

truly wild how driving really does become like piloting a mech after a while. like it sounds so car-bro-y but the car genuinely does become like an extension of your body. your muscles are simply making the correct micro-movements to perfectly manouvre a giant piece of machinery through a constantly moving maze while your brain is busy singing karaoke. you can physically feel when a gap is too small for your car-sona to fit through, like a cat putting its whiskers into a crevice. your brain is suddenly able to do on-the-fly s=d/t calculations in a milisecond and tell you exactly how quickly you need to move to avoid an oncoming vehicle while turning across the road. why does driving unlock the unused 89% of my brain
#Yes yes yes#I didnt expect driving to be enjoyable#And oh boy was I surprised!#Approaching one year of my license and now most parallel parking is 2 adjustments tops#So much fun#Car#Driving

Very funny to me that the same summer I get rejected, Taylor Swift AND my childhood best friend get engaged. I know that if it wasn't for that I would be feeling more down about single-hood, but knowing my bff is engaged? I can't doubt love like that!!

One thing I don’t hear talked about often in regards to those of us who grew up without receiving much romantic attention in high school (and even college) is that—and this could just be me, I suppose—you start to get into this headspace where you think that dating and marriage is something that other people do. And it’s not necessarily from a lack of wanting to, or thinking you’re unattractive or unlovable, it’s more like you’ve gotten so used to being outside of that sphere that you subconsciously start to other yourself. And because you weren’t integrated into that sphere naturally, entering it independently as an adult seems almost…impossible. Like, is this just me, or
#No no this is so real#I wasnt into antone on highschool#And up until my junior year of college I was consciously focusing on my studies#And it took an acquaintance having a very intense crush on me#For me to finally realize I was part of the game#That me getting married (to someone I loved deeply) was not practically impossible#its now gotten to the realm of 'if it should happen it will' but it was a huge realization#Even this year hearing that an acquaintance was interested in me was mindblowingmind-blowing#And there are multiple instances (this last years since senior year) of me having an interaction with a guy and realizing#They might have been flirting a couple hours later#and even beyond the dudes not paying attention to you#a family as something I would want didntdidn't cross my mind until I saw my cousinsn's family#(and iI say this as someone with a loving and stable upbringing)
