I'll have you know, that I just completed field camp where we camped for 3 weeks in the west and looked at rocks everyday. And a couple people did buy tackle boxes for their samples to keep then separated. Meanwhile, I put every single sample, except my gypsum and limestone, in a grocery bag :)
I did many times not feel like taking my backpack off to get my rock hammers so I just broke pieces off with my hands because it was a lot of soft sandstone and limestone, especially if they broke into small sheets
Fun fact: the guys at our college’s geology department prop out the doors with their samples. I totally understand why but as someone whose work with samples is necessarily super delicate and sterile it fucks me up so bad

One of my favorite things right now is that my boyfriend and I send each other numerous tiktoks. Occasionally they're funny, but like 98% of them are just cute dog/cat/animal videos, with a high percentage being bernese mountain dogs

Being in geoscience is funny because all of our perceptions of time are completely skewed. No other field would you have someone tell you that 1,000,000 years isn't very long ago. Anything under 5,000,000 is chump change (and I am being stingy).

I make promises to myself like "when I have adult money I'm gonna get this". Like being an adult means you have the means to buy that really nice pillow you saw 4 years ago that looked super comfy. It means you can go to the aquarium without worrying about your budget and getting to buy souvenir pins of a whale shark. Being an adult means you get to do kid things, but with security and fulfillment!
advice i think we should tell children is that when adults say stuff like ‘now that i’m an adult i get really excited about stuff like coffee tables and bathrooms and rugs etc’ they don’t mean ‘and now i don’t care about blorbo and squimbus from my childhood tv shows anymore’ bc your average adult still loves all the same pop culture stuff they always did; they just have a greater appreciation for the mundane as well. growing up just means you can enjoy life twice as much now. you can get really excited about a new stuffed animal AND about a new kitchen sponge. peace and love

This is my favorite mineral, kyanite. Kyanite has a bladed growth habit and actually has two different hardnesses because of this. If you test the hardness down the blade axis, its hardness would be a 5. If you test it across the axis (perpendicular to the blades) you would find kyanite has a hardness of 7. Also, look at that blue color, that's awesome! Kyanite also holds slight sentimental value to me. When I was first learning about minerals, I saw the kyanite polymorph graph and liked drawing it. I was excited about this new information I learned, and told my bf while we were in the early stages of our relationship. I drew him a polymorph graph on an index card, and he actually framed it and has it hanging in his room. For these reasons, kyanite is my favorite mineral.
Wish people would randomly send me pictures of their favorite rocks/minerals and tell me why it’s their favorite

Mountains can have different shapes depending on how they were formed. Pyramidal peaks are created when multiple glaciers meet and erode the mountain from three sides. The best example of a pyramidal peak around Mount Rainier is the aptly named Pyramid Peak. It can be easily viewed from along the Paradise Road looking west. Have you noticed this peak when visiting the park?

I am making a geology kahoot for my little (college) students who voted willingly in my poll (I begged them) about what type of review they wanted so I could make it better for them (they seemed unenthused about the prior two review sessions) so now I'm doing what they want (they seem unwilling to play a review game outside of their comfort zone)
#no one even gave me ideas with my “other” answer choice#i am a peer instructor#not a professor#this is hard work#Kahoot!
