Japanese artist Monokubo imagines a world where larger-than-life animals roam the land and live among us. Through her fantastical digital paintings, the gentle giants are sources of comfort when their human companions are having a bad day or are traipsing through places that feel strange or unwelcoming. They offer them a fluffy paw of encouragement or a nose to boop, and they’re always ready to snuggle.

Monokubo was inspired to produce these illustrations after seeing iconic Studio Ghibli films like Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro which both feature large creatures in their cast. Many of the animals that Monokubo depicts are house cats. “In most cases, I choose the animals that have left an impression in my daily life,” she tells My Modern Met. “I have a cat and he is very cute.”

While felines are her favorite, Monokubo has branched out and illustrated creatures of the forest including raccoons and wolves. But she doesn’t stop there. Cuddly domesticated bunnies and Shiba Inu dogs act as faithful companions to the illustrations’ young people.

Monokubo has a book featuring her larger-than-life animals called Megalophilia that is now available on Amazon.

A Living Statue Partner who works at a museum where they pose on a pedestal all day. You bring them sandwiches and fruit smoothies after the museum closes and you go on dates in art wing. They know a lot about the old masters and love telling you all sorts of art history trivia.

An Elemental Girlfriend who can control the earth and works repairing the damage done by drilling companies. She likes riding her mountain bike and taking you camping near breathtaking views.

A Goblin Boyfriend who has a great sense of humor and works at a university. He has a wide array of knowledge and loves listening as much as he loves talking. You go on dates in fancy coffee shops or go shopping in quaint old town markets.

A Vampire Partner who drinks fish blood and during the day sleeps in the mud at the bottom of a river. You meet them every night on the beach of a moonlit lake and they like cuddling up to you to warm themselves They are ancient and full of scrambled memories. They like listening to you talk about your day to live vicariously through your experiences.

A Skeleton Girlfriend who makes bad puns and runs a popular blog. She unironically loves goosebumps and takes you to cool out of the way restaurants where she knows the owner and always gets you tickets to sold out concerts.

 A Nightmare Boyfriend who looks frightening but has a sweet side. The shadowy man appears in your dreams and chases away your fears, making sure you get a good night’s sleep. You can only be with him while you sleep and he feels sad that he can’t take you on a proper date in the sunlight.

A Starborn Partner who rises into the sky at night as returns to earth when the sun rises. They sing you songs woven into the tapestries of the auroras. They bring you gifts of diamonds from the heart of frozen comets and red rocks from mars. They get flustered when you try to give them gifts in return, and they treat everything you give them like a precious treasure.

They are all up for grabs treat them right like they would treat you.

I literally can’t believe it, this morning I stepped on a scale and I was 102 lbs and my UGW was 105! I weighed myself yesterday and I was 110 so it must have been water weight but OH MY GOD! I’m so happy this is crazy I did it?? I’m finally as small as I wanted, now all I need to do is maintain ?? This is honestly euphoric. May 28, 2018 is the day I became the skinny bitch I’ve always wanted to be.
