The thing that terrifies me as someone with a degree in homeland security. Is that scaring the US into thinking that there are sleeper cells in the country when there aren’t any, still incites violence.

There will be people attacked for no other reason than their neighbors are racist. And there will be people attacked for no other reason than that violence is in the air.

And also heightened panic can be triggering for those already prone to acts of massive violence, like active shooters. And that results in mass casualty events that are perpetrated by “lone wolf” types who were “radicalized” on line.

But the word choice of “radicalized” will once again be connotated to mean “middle eastern terrorist” exactly like it did in the 00s and the cycle of targeting and attacking people based on their presumed background will continue. Meanwhile the real threat of aggressive angry white men with guns will be completely ignored.

So yes, a national headline of “sleeper cells connected to Iran” terrifies me, but not because of imaginary implanted groups here, but because there are people (mainly white vangelical types) chomping at the bit to wreak havoc.

Stay safe, stay aware, stay vigilant.
